00:00:00.281 --> 00:00:01.383
Hey there, sunshine.
00:00:01.383 --> 00:00:03.849
Welcome to the Power On Plants podcast.
00:00:03.849 --> 00:00:13.509
We're your host, jared and Anita Roussell, and we're absolutely head over heels for whole plant foods and helping you navigate this incredible plant based journey.
00:00:13.509 --> 00:00:18.405
That's because our lives have been completely changed by plant based goodness.
00:00:18.405 --> 00:00:31.060
We used to struggle every day with excess pounds and low energy, vascular disease, joint pain and lack of sleep, just to name a few, and even though we're medical professionals, we still weren't getting practical answers that actually worked.
00:00:31.060 --> 00:00:39.506
So we dug into the research, we started living what we learned, and now we both have our lives back, and that's what we want for you, too.
00:00:39.506 --> 00:00:43.042
The truth is, you can do this, and it's not hard.
00:00:43.042 --> 00:00:47.472
You just need a way that will bring real and lasting change, and that path.
00:00:47.472 --> 00:00:51.414
It has to be simple and enjoyable, and it's got to be delicious too.
00:00:51.414 --> 00:00:54.223
So are you ready to live your life to the fullest?
00:00:54.223 --> 00:00:59.804
Then you're in the right place, because living without limits that's what Power On Plants is all about.
00:00:59.804 --> 00:01:04.784
So pull up your chair, grab a matcha latte and let's get started.
00:01:04.784 --> 00:01:09.037
Are you here because you love sweet treats?
00:01:09.037 --> 00:01:16.256
Well, you're in good company, because we love sweet treats, sweet treats, sweet treats too.
00:01:16.256 --> 00:01:19.263
This is going to be a good one, I can tell.
00:01:19.263 --> 00:01:22.287
So here is the thing.
00:01:22.287 --> 00:01:30.350
We got to have our sweet treats and we don't want to say to ourselves I can't have this, I can't have that.
00:01:30.350 --> 00:01:31.560
It's what Jared always says.
00:01:31.560 --> 00:01:35.171
You got to say how can I right?
00:01:35.171 --> 00:01:39.745
I've told this story before, but I've got to tell it again because it just never gets old.
00:01:39.745 --> 00:01:42.031
We have met so many people.
00:01:42.031 --> 00:01:43.403
I won't tell about a specific one.
00:01:43.403 --> 00:01:50.911
It just happens time and time again when and it's usually a woman telling us her husband's problem with his health is that he likes sweet things.
00:01:50.911 --> 00:01:54.528
If he'd just quit eating all the sweet stuff he'd be alright.
00:01:54.608 --> 00:01:55.730
He'd be okay, because sweet's not bad.
00:01:56.052 --> 00:01:58.771
Right, because a banana is making everybody in the world sick.
00:01:58.771 --> 00:02:01.844
It's the banana, no, but he's probably not eating bananas.
00:02:01.885 --> 00:02:03.873
I'm sure that's not what she's complaining about.
00:02:04.213 --> 00:02:08.278
He's probably got his box of little Debbie's over there, I don't know, honeybun or something.
00:02:08.299 --> 00:02:10.243
There's Werther's butterscotch candies.
00:02:10.405 --> 00:02:12.950
Maybe, maybe just chocolate cake and stuff.
00:02:12.950 --> 00:02:18.681
I want you to wrap your head around the fact that you can have sweet treats.
00:02:18.681 --> 00:02:25.564
You don't have to have sweet cravings anymore, because I'll tell you when you eat sweets in the way that we teach you, just lose that.
00:02:25.564 --> 00:02:27.253
The cravings lose their hold on you.
00:02:27.253 --> 00:02:39.582
If you don't know how to get rid of sweet cravings, you need to go back and start with episode 224 and listen to it as well as 225, because we have a two-part episode on getting rid of sweet cravings that you are going to love.
00:02:39.582 --> 00:02:50.532
Okay, but today I want to talk more practically about what do you use to replace the sweet Like if you just love something sweet to eat what are you going to eat?
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:53.439
Replace the sweeteners and some of those sweet treats.
00:02:53.560 --> 00:02:56.969
Well, we're going to talk about that too, but I want to talk about what do you eat?
00:02:56.969 --> 00:03:09.252
That's sweet, because if she's sitting there, like we were before, she's thinking how do I do this, how do I make plant-based work for me in the way that is going to be sustainable?
00:03:09.252 --> 00:03:13.096
In order to be sustainable, you got to love what you're eating.
00:03:13.096 --> 00:03:18.700
Not only does it have to be healthy and make you feel good, but listen, we've eaten some nasty foods in the name of health.
00:03:18.700 --> 00:03:19.864
Do you know what I'm talking about?
00:03:19.864 --> 00:03:23.312
I'm so over that and we are anti that.
00:03:23.312 --> 00:03:24.805
That's what Power and Plants is all about.
00:03:24.824 --> 00:03:25.849
We're anti-gross.
00:03:25.849 --> 00:03:28.225
Anti-gross tasting food no.
00:03:28.326 --> 00:03:30.171
I can't, seriously.
00:03:30.171 --> 00:03:42.188
We've got to stop with saying recipes are five star when they're not five star, because I've been on websites just like you look in, made the recipes and ended up hangry because it weren't no brownie.
00:03:42.188 --> 00:03:43.110
You know what I'm saying.
00:03:43.110 --> 00:03:45.584
You can tell me it's a brownie, all day long.
00:03:46.060 --> 00:03:54.043
You started off angry, then you became hungry, because now you were angry and still hungry and couldn't eat what you were wanting to eat.
00:03:54.611 --> 00:03:56.604
Well, I wasn't angry when I found the recipe.
00:03:56.604 --> 00:03:57.449
I thought it'd be good.
00:03:57.650 --> 00:04:04.985
Now, that was after all, that, yeah, after you spend all that time and you try and you thought this isn't good and you get angry and then you think I'm still hungry.
00:04:04.985 --> 00:04:05.608
Now.
00:04:05.608 --> 00:04:05.949
You're hungry.
00:04:06.292 --> 00:04:07.337
And let's talk about how.
00:04:07.337 --> 00:04:09.629
Maybe it took an hour, an hour and a half.
00:04:09.629 --> 00:04:12.782
Why does it take that long to get a dessert on the table?
00:04:12.782 --> 00:04:14.169
I have it no idea.
00:04:14.169 --> 00:04:16.353
Okay, we don't do that around here.
00:04:16.353 --> 00:04:24.055
It's only special occasion desserts and treats that we take that long to make, because our regular Day-to-day does not allow for that.
00:04:24.055 --> 00:04:24.677
Does yours?
00:04:24.677 --> 00:04:26.401
No, it doesn't right.
00:04:26.891 --> 00:04:32.829
Most likely not and when you find strategies that make the stuff you love and it doesn't have to take that long.
00:04:32.829 --> 00:04:36.142
Why would you want to anyway, if you can prepare something in 15 minutes.
00:04:36.142 --> 00:04:36.725
It's awesome.
00:04:36.725 --> 00:04:37.146
You love it.
00:04:37.146 --> 00:04:38.069
It's your go-to quick.
00:04:38.069 --> 00:04:40.117
Why would you want to take an hour and a half to do?
00:04:40.177 --> 00:04:44.959
Yeah, oh yeah, hashtag go-to-quick, we got to have those right, I think you got to have that list.
00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:47.360
Go and make your list of favorites and find your new one.
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:51.363
So if you love sweet sister, listen, you're going to find your new favorites.
00:04:51.363 --> 00:04:54.266
If you've tried one brownie, that did you wrong.
00:04:54.266 --> 00:04:58.738
Don't worry, there are other brownie recipes out there.
00:04:59.019 --> 00:05:05.175
Look, just just break up with the first brownie recipe, find you a new one right, absolutely break up with it.
00:05:05.250 --> 00:05:06.113
It's got to go.
00:05:06.113 --> 00:05:14.362
I had a meeting with someone on the phone the other day and she was saying to me look, anita, I'm just gonna be honest with you, my husband, he tried brownies.
00:05:14.362 --> 00:05:18.639
I made the bean brownies one time for him and he said what is this?
00:05:18.639 --> 00:05:25.509
These are not brownies, and I had some kind of cottage cheese swirl in there and it was really bad.
00:05:25.509 --> 00:05:27.456
I don't even know what that was.
00:05:27.456 --> 00:05:31.449
And he is a little more reluctant to try things now because he's been burned.
00:05:31.449 --> 00:05:36.225
Okay, when you get burned with a plant-based recipe, I mean seriously.
00:05:36.225 --> 00:05:37.470
There's even comedians.
00:05:37.470 --> 00:05:46.319
We were listening to this comedian the other day and he was talking about how he walked by this vegan bakery and he went in and he's trying the vegan.
00:05:46.630 --> 00:05:48.850
Head cakes, but he didn't realize it was a vegan bakery.
00:05:48.850 --> 00:05:51.019
He didn't, and he saw the.
00:05:51.019 --> 00:05:53.088
I think it was a root beer donut or something.
00:05:53.389 --> 00:05:55.394
I forgot exactly what it was.
00:05:55.394 --> 00:05:56.478
It looked fantastic.
00:05:56.858 --> 00:05:58.423
And she said can I help you?
00:05:58.423 --> 00:05:59.312
Do you want one of those?
00:05:59.312 --> 00:06:04.764
And he said no, I want to Put one in the bag because the other one's not making it outside of here.
00:06:04.764 --> 00:06:09.860
And then when he tried it, it was like somebody just slam the brakes on in the car right in the middle.
00:06:10.833 --> 00:06:12.223
He said he spat it out.
00:06:12.223 --> 00:06:14.533
He said, took a bite on it, spitting it out in the store.
00:06:14.533 --> 00:06:18.341
And she said, sir, did you not realize you're in a vegan bakery?
00:06:18.341 --> 00:06:23.125
Now, hold up, right there in my brain, I hear cars screeching, tires screeching.
00:06:23.125 --> 00:06:24.110
I don't get that.
00:06:24.110 --> 00:06:25.954
I don't get that.
00:06:25.954 --> 00:06:31.389
Why should it be that, just because it says vegan or plant-based, that it tastes nasty?
00:06:31.389 --> 00:06:33.815
Why do we even have the idea?
00:06:33.815 --> 00:06:35.880
Who gave us that idea, right, sister?
00:06:35.880 --> 00:06:39.399
Who Gave us the idea that healthy has to equal nasty?
00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:40.091
You know why?
00:06:40.091 --> 00:06:43.581
It is because we've had one too many run-in with the wrong recipe.
00:06:43.581 --> 00:06:52.958
So if you try the wrong recipe and it is really bad, try another one from someone different, okay, move along.
00:06:52.958 --> 00:06:59.476
Or Give that other person to try with one or two more, because there may be just be a few tweaks you need to make for your taste.
00:06:59.476 --> 00:07:04.574
But sometimes and I'll say many, many times, it's not just the one or two tweaks.
00:07:04.574 --> 00:07:10.612
Okay, find your new favorites, and this involves Sweet things.
00:07:10.612 --> 00:07:17.999
Okay, listen, a woman doesn't need to tell her husband he has to give up brownies or put something on a plate in front of him.
00:07:17.999 --> 00:07:20.264
That is just not good.
00:07:20.264 --> 00:07:24.360
So we have a brownie recipe we came out with, because we knew people love brownies.
00:07:24.360 --> 00:07:28.702
We put it into the membership where all our new recipes go, because our members need that.
00:07:28.702 --> 00:07:31.050
You guys need to know how to do these things.
00:07:31.050 --> 00:07:32.394
What do we eat now?
00:07:32.394 --> 00:07:33.639
I'm gonna have chair.
00:07:33.639 --> 00:07:35.043
Just I'm putting them on the spot again.
00:07:35.064 --> 00:07:36.649
I'm gonna have him share with you.
00:07:36.649 --> 00:07:39.139
I'm starting to become used to the uncomfortable feeling.
00:07:39.139 --> 00:07:42.516
It's becoming the new normal.
00:07:44.932 --> 00:07:45.654
You're too comfortable.
00:07:45.654 --> 00:07:48.666
I'm gonna get a bright spotlight and I'm gonna start just shun it it on you.
00:07:48.666 --> 00:07:53.334
Just turn it it on when I put you in the spotlight, alright and we'll put a sound effect for that too.
00:07:53.413 --> 00:07:54.495
Are you ready?
00:07:54.495 --> 00:07:55.935
Yes go ahead.
00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:08.711
You need to go, you need to tell us what you love, that are your favorite sweet treats go to, and then I want you to tell us how long it takes you to make them.
00:08:10.141 --> 00:08:13.089
Well, that's kind of tricky because I don't make a lot of this stuff.
00:08:16.786 --> 00:08:16.887
Good.
00:08:17.740 --> 00:08:28.632
These are simple, and should I be here home alone, which never happens, or one of my children is not making a sweet treat, then I we've got the recipes.
00:08:28.632 --> 00:08:29.033
They're simple.
00:08:29.033 --> 00:08:29.963
I could do it.
00:08:29.983 --> 00:08:33.738
Well, the kids do it, so obviously, yes, I just kind of piggyback on them.
00:08:33.758 --> 00:08:34.360
I smell something.
00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:36.828
Oh hey, is somebody making some gingerbread?
00:08:36.828 --> 00:08:39.850
He's a taster he doesn't make him.
00:08:40.051 --> 00:08:43.542
Okay, let's say you had a sweet craving at night time and you did.
00:08:43.542 --> 00:08:47.049
You didn't need a recipe or anything, you were just craving something sweet.
00:08:47.049 --> 00:08:48.432
Well, what would you reach for?
00:08:51.198 --> 00:08:54.488
Oh, am I making a recipe?
00:08:55.081 --> 00:09:00.417
It's not a recipe, just something you're gonna throw it together or something you're gonna grab an eight, probably something that's quick and simple.
00:09:00.437 --> 00:09:01.100
That comes to mind.
00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:02.144
We'd be grabbing a date.
00:09:02.144 --> 00:09:03.392
Mm-hmm, pitting it.
00:09:03.392 --> 00:09:04.940
Take the pit out, please.
00:09:05.240 --> 00:09:05.381
Yeah.
00:09:05.422 --> 00:09:09.460
I'll make that mistake take the pit out and then maybe put just a little bit of a nut butter on it.
00:09:09.460 --> 00:09:11.289
I love that.
00:09:11.289 --> 00:09:20.553
That's such a great sweet one Maybe two and it just gives you that burst of flavor and it gives you that it's filling and it satisfies that sweet craving.
00:09:20.820 --> 00:09:21.802
Absolutely okay.
00:09:21.802 --> 00:09:23.726
So this is something really simple.
00:09:23.726 --> 00:09:25.893
Right before he taped this recipe, I was hungry.
00:09:25.893 --> 00:09:27.623
So what's sitting right here next to me?
00:09:27.623 --> 00:09:32.974
I got two things and I mixed them together, and I didn't have any trail mix in the pantry.
00:09:32.974 --> 00:09:33.823
So what I do?
00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:40.559
Right now I see in front of her some raisins organic raisins and some shelled sunflower seeds.
00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:43.350
They're so good together, y'all, they're so good that.
00:09:43.350 --> 00:09:47.322
Or raisins and almonds Yum, just raw, I mean just raw.
00:09:47.322 --> 00:09:49.489
Just grab a handful and eat them.
00:09:49.489 --> 00:09:50.572
They're so good.
00:09:50.572 --> 00:09:52.366
Okay, they're not gonna hurt you.
00:09:52.366 --> 00:09:54.495
Nuts are not gonna pack on the pounds.
00:09:54.495 --> 00:09:56.523
Nuts are not the problem.
00:09:56.523 --> 00:10:02.740
Dr Greger has the whole video on nuts and how you can eat nuts and even women that ate more nuts.
00:10:02.740 --> 00:10:07.940
Over time, the majority of them even lost more weight, adding in tens of thousands of calories.
00:10:07.940 --> 00:10:09.124
Was it not tens of thousands?
00:10:09.184 --> 00:10:11.211
It was over the course of months.
00:10:11.211 --> 00:10:13.320
So, he's saying a handful of nuts a day.
00:10:13.320 --> 00:10:15.696
He's not saying eat two jars of peanut butter.
00:10:15.696 --> 00:10:16.178
Obviously.
00:10:16.178 --> 00:10:23.120
Yeah but just adding some in a sensible amount, you don't have to be afraid of them, and that they actually do improve longevity.
00:10:23.120 --> 00:10:29.102
There are a lot of nutrients, a lot of minerals, phytonutrients, and they're, they're good, don't be afraid, right.
00:10:29.182 --> 00:10:33.332
So even with the nut butter that you did, you could take two dates a spoonful of nut butter.
00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.167
Well, even with that it's maybe delicious.
00:10:36.167 --> 00:10:38.312
A half teaspoon each.
00:10:38.692 --> 00:10:41.039
It doesn't take much, no, not at all, just a touch.
00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:41.942
It's so good.
00:10:42.042 --> 00:10:45.250
So the raisins feeling particularly lazy, I just forget the nut butter.
00:10:45.250 --> 00:10:46.332
I just grabbed the date needed.
00:10:47.541 --> 00:10:48.124
They're really good.
00:10:48.124 --> 00:10:49.529
Frozen to, they taste like caramel.
00:10:49.529 --> 00:10:59.999
Yeah, they ever you remember doing that with apples we haven't done that in a while, but dates frozen with apple slices so good it's like it's kind of like a candy, or actually it's like a caramel apple.
00:10:59.999 --> 00:11:02.688
Yeah, it's really like a caramel or we've done it.
00:11:02.820 --> 00:11:04.505
Haven't done this in a while, but have done it before.
00:11:04.505 --> 00:11:09.792
Where we take a pecan, put that inside the date and freeze it and that's like a little pie.
00:11:09.792 --> 00:11:15.759
And one, one or two bites, you get that that hit of that flavor, and it doesn't take much.
00:11:16.062 --> 00:11:16.385
You know what?
00:11:16.385 --> 00:11:17.879
That one's almost so sweet for me.
00:11:17.879 --> 00:11:20.846
I always use a half date because we use medjool dates.
00:11:20.846 --> 00:11:22.308
They are the best.
00:11:22.649 --> 00:11:24.774
They're so good candy I'm telling.
00:11:25.900 --> 00:11:26.041
Okay.
00:11:26.041 --> 00:11:28.889
So if you haven't tried medjool dates, that's what you need to order.
00:11:28.889 --> 00:11:34.712
You take the pit out and then I take just half the date and wrap it around the pecan half.
00:11:34.712 --> 00:11:36.684
Okay, it's really, really good.
00:11:36.684 --> 00:11:39.192
Now, if you got a whole pecan, you can wrap the whole date around it.
00:11:39.192 --> 00:11:45.186
I feel like it's almost too sweet for me with the whole date and the pecan, but it depends on how much of a sweet tooth you are.
00:11:45.186 --> 00:11:46.849
One date is not gonna hurt you.
00:11:46.849 --> 00:11:48.373
Two dates are not gonna hurt you.
00:11:48.373 --> 00:11:51.048
Okay, enjoy your sweet treats.
00:11:51.048 --> 00:11:52.250
We eat brownies.
00:11:52.250 --> 00:11:54.135
We still eat cupcake.
00:11:54.135 --> 00:11:55.320
I have carrot cake gyms.
00:11:55.320 --> 00:11:57.711
I have a gluten-free version and a regular version.
00:11:57.711 --> 00:11:59.299
They're absolutely wonderful.
00:11:59.299 --> 00:12:07.505
We eat banana bread muffin just we do, and they are mixing and they are zero guilt Zero guilt, and they're delicious.
00:12:07.505 --> 00:12:08.549
Do we worry about it?
00:12:08.549 --> 00:12:09.933
Do we watch our calories?
00:12:09.933 --> 00:12:11.779
No, do we maintain our weight?
00:12:11.779 --> 00:12:14.951
Yes, we've lost over 70 pounds without even trying.
00:12:14.951 --> 00:12:20.519
Some people may get frustrated by that, but it's the truth and the good news is that it's good news.
00:12:20.519 --> 00:12:27.159
It should be something to celebrate, because if you're trying to lose some weight, it is the easiest way to lose weight.
00:12:27.159 --> 00:12:32.519
We're gonna talk about why that is on an upcoming episode, but we're gonna stick with sweets here.
00:12:32.519 --> 00:12:35.934
So we just wanted to give you some ideas of some different things you can make.
00:12:35.934 --> 00:12:43.626
If I want some of the sweet I just don't have a lot of time I might go to the pantry and get a little nut butter and stir a little Rock a cow powder into it.
00:12:43.626 --> 00:12:45.513
It's like cocoa powder, but less refined.
00:12:45.513 --> 00:12:50.009
Stir that in there with Maybe a little bit of date syrup.
00:12:50.009 --> 00:12:51.815
I really really love that.
00:12:51.815 --> 00:12:52.839
That's so good.
00:12:52.839 --> 00:12:55.317
So now we've talked about regular dates.
00:12:55.317 --> 00:12:59.941
Now with regular dates or dried fruit of any kind, you can use that to sweeten things.
00:12:59.941 --> 00:13:01.796
So think about how you might do that.
00:13:01.796 --> 00:13:05.931
If you wanted to touch the sweetness in your salad, you can add some dry fruit, things like that.
00:13:05.931 --> 00:13:08.018
There's all kinds of ways you can do that.
00:13:08.018 --> 00:13:20.418
If you want something sweet, you can easily make a berry cobbler without adding a lot of extra sugar, just with naturally sweet fruits like pineapples and mangoes, and throw those in with your cherries and blueberries.
00:13:20.418 --> 00:13:26.802
It really is almost limitless what you can make with just fruit, frozen and fresh.
00:13:26.802 --> 00:13:32.542
And then there is sweetening things with the dried fruit, like we talked about.
00:13:32.542 --> 00:13:47.820
You've got plums, you've got prunes, you've got raisins, dried mangoes, all of these different dried fruits, but I want you to remember, always check and make sure there's no added sugars, no added oil, because almost every dried fruit out there has added sugar and added oil.
00:13:47.820 --> 00:13:49.855
You will find your new favorites, though.
00:13:49.855 --> 00:13:51.736
I promise you they are there.
00:13:51.736 --> 00:13:59.274
So so far we've talked about eating sweet things, or sweetening things with dried fruit, with regular fruit.
00:13:59.274 --> 00:14:02.517
We mentioned date syrup.
00:14:02.517 --> 00:14:06.379
Date syrup is a little bit more refined than date paste.
00:14:06.379 --> 00:14:14.379
You can make date paste at home just by taking those pitted medjool dates, soaking them in some water and blending them up in your food processor.
00:14:14.379 --> 00:14:17.538
Then you store it in your fridge and it'll last for days.
00:14:17.538 --> 00:14:20.356
So that's a great way to sweeten things.
00:14:20.356 --> 00:14:27.458
You use that date paste because you have all that fiber from the dates in there and if you get date syrup that fiber's been removed.
00:14:27.458 --> 00:14:35.421
They just strain out the syrup from it and the fiber's been removed, but I would say some of it is probably still in there and not all of it.
00:14:35.421 --> 00:14:42.629
So date syrup and date paste are some of the better sweeteners that are out there, because you do get a lot of the nutrients.
