00:00:01.022 --> 00:00:04.751
Why eating vegan isn't the best option for optimal health.
00:00:04.751 --> 00:00:06.365
Let's talk about it.
00:00:06.365 --> 00:00:09.939
Hey sister, welcome to the Power On Plants podcast.
00:00:09.939 --> 00:00:15.492
Are you tired of staring into the fridge wondering what to eat so you can just feel better?
00:00:15.492 --> 00:00:20.891
Do you want to avoid spending hours in the kitchen making complicated meals in the name of health?
00:00:20.891 --> 00:00:27.000
Would you love to leave fatigue behind and finally have the energy to do all the things you want to do?
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:34.831
Hi, we're Chered and Anita Roussell, christ followers, healthcare professionals, parents of four and big fans of great tasting food.
00:00:34.831 --> 00:00:47.075
We, too, tried exercising more, eating natural and clean foods, but we still found ourselves struggling with what we thought were changes that come with age or bad genes, and we weren't finding answers to traditional routes.
00:00:47.075 --> 00:00:54.000
So we dug into the research and created our secret nutritional weapon sustainable plant-based living.
00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.979
The truth is, you can eat more whole plant foods, and it's not hard.
00:00:57.979 --> 00:00:59.646
You just need the way.
00:00:59.646 --> 00:01:03.000
That's realistic and delicious, so you never feel deprived.
00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:11.000
If you're ready to enjoy your meals, no longer be held back by your health struggles and actively live your life, then you're in the right place.
00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:16.753
So grab your favorite plant-based cup of happy pop in those earbuds and let's get started.
00:01:18.063 --> 00:01:19.748
Okay, okay, okay, okay, hold on now.
00:01:19.748 --> 00:01:20.382
Alright.
00:01:20.382 --> 00:01:24.980
So you're saying, you're telling me that vegan isn't necessarily healthy?
00:01:25.662 --> 00:01:28.513
No, it isn't, but yet we're vegan.
00:01:29.397 --> 00:01:31.566
Kind of sort of we're kind of vegan.
00:01:31.605 --> 00:01:33.368
Yes, Kind of sort of vegan.
00:01:33.388 --> 00:01:44.000
but there is a difference between what we do we sometimes use that word and whenever I'm explaining to my patients how I eat and I explain whole food, plant-based, I say it's maybe a cousin to vegan.
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:53.022
There's a lot of similarities, but there are also some very key differences, very key differences, and that's what we want to talk about today Absolutely Well.
00:01:53.183 --> 00:01:56.977
First of all, vegan isn't necessarily whole food plant-based.
00:01:57.558 --> 00:01:57.980
That's true.
00:01:58.540 --> 00:02:02.391
But whole food plant-based is for the most part vegan.
00:02:02.813 --> 00:02:02.974
Yes.
00:02:03.180 --> 00:02:06.629
The main exception I can think of is honey Right.
00:02:06.629 --> 00:02:09.709
So we don't really argue with people about honey now.
00:02:09.709 --> 00:02:14.692
Please don't let the hair on the back of your neck stand up if you're adamantly against people eating honey.
00:02:14.692 --> 00:02:21.979
I'm just saying you know, people who are whole food plant-based are probably not going to necessarily fight you on that issue, because it's not an animal rights type thing.
00:02:21.979 --> 00:02:29.948
A lot of people who eat whole food plant-based get into this for health because they're looking at, I want the whole food.
00:02:29.948 --> 00:02:31.687
It doesn't mean we don't care about animals.
00:02:31.687 --> 00:02:35.871
It also doesn't mean that as we continue on this journey, we care less.
00:02:35.871 --> 00:02:37.825
We actually start caring more about animals.
00:02:37.825 --> 00:02:38.609
It's what I'm saying.
00:02:38.609 --> 00:02:43.000
Like, as you start eating this way and living this way, you do tend to start caring more about creation.
00:02:43.401 --> 00:02:48.000
I would say that our perspective changed when we saw that animals were not necessary for food.
00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:55.979
We stopped seeing them as food, so we did become more sensitive to what they go through, the modern farming practices, things of that nature.
00:02:56.139 --> 00:03:01.197
And then you start seeing some of the movies on what they actually go through and how they're mistreated and how they're killed.
00:03:01.197 --> 00:03:02.000
It is not pretty.
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:06.979
We don't belabor the point here, because there are plenty of movies that document that, if you want to go watch that.
00:03:06.979 --> 00:03:15.000
But it isn't pretty and it's not nice and it is not how we were meant to treat God's creation, not the way animals are treated today.
00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:22.000
But I will joke with my patients that the vegans would disown us because we do permit honey with the whole food, plant-based lifestyle.
00:03:22.965 --> 00:03:25.979
But beyond that, what are the big differences?
00:03:25.979 --> 00:03:27.979
I mean, there are some big differences here.
00:03:27.979 --> 00:03:34.000
We're talking about one thing there, but let's talk about what really is it that makes whole food plant-based.
00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:37.000
It's vegan, but it's very different.
00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:41.000
The specifics are that you're eating whole plant foods.
00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:46.365
You're getting these nutrients in the form that they were created to be eaten in, so the whole package.
00:03:46.365 --> 00:04:01.834
If you start pulling out pieces, bits and pieces to create other products, bits and pieces of plants, nutrients taste different, things like that you get into travel nutritionally and we believe that's because it's not in the package it was created in.
00:04:01.834 --> 00:04:06.000
But you see that time and again with research, it's not just about our beliefs.
00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:14.730
We back stuff up with research because Jared's a physician assistant, I'm a nurse, you know we have certain certifications with nutrition and things like that.
00:04:14.730 --> 00:04:17.980
So I want you to know that the research is super important to us.
00:04:17.980 --> 00:04:22.000
These are the whole plant foods in their whole form.
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:24.959
Now we're not talking we just have to eat a whole apple.
00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:26.980
It can be processed up a little bit.
00:04:26.980 --> 00:04:28.980
We're looking at minimal processing.
00:04:28.980 --> 00:04:33.672
We don't want something that has a little apple flavoring in it, right?
00:04:33.672 --> 00:04:35.208
So a vegan.
00:04:35.208 --> 00:04:36.959
Let's talk about what they might eat.
00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:45.915
A vegan might eat white flour, oils, processed sugars, potato chips and not think anything about it.
00:04:45.915 --> 00:04:48.115
Now, does that mean we don't eat potato chips?
00:04:48.115 --> 00:04:50.180
No, it doesn't we eat potatoes.
00:04:50.290 --> 00:04:51.314
We do enjoy from time to time.
00:04:51.610 --> 00:04:54.600
They take nothing to make it home when you know how to do it.
00:04:54.600 --> 00:04:58.014
They're super quick, way more delicious than anything you get in the store.
00:04:58.014 --> 00:04:59.596
You don't feel bad after you eat them.
00:04:59.596 --> 00:05:00.473
There's no oil.
00:05:00.473 --> 00:05:01.913
They're just as crispy.
00:05:01.913 --> 00:05:03.639
You'll not believe it, it would blow your mind.
00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:06.456
We were sharing that with our members the other day and they were like are you kidding me?
00:05:06.456 --> 00:05:08.293
Three minutes and I've got potato chips.
00:05:08.293 --> 00:05:08.875
Who knew?
00:05:08.875 --> 00:05:10.661
Who knew you don't have to have an air fryer?
00:05:10.661 --> 00:05:11.774
What is up with this?
00:05:11.774 --> 00:05:13.716
I mean, this is how you live.
00:05:13.716 --> 00:05:20.101
You start finding those new favorites and you don't have to eat these quote vegan foods when they're not healthy.
00:05:20.101 --> 00:05:22.117
They're not setting you up for success.
00:05:22.430 --> 00:05:24.415
But it's one ingredient, just potatoes.
00:05:24.415 --> 00:05:26.800
Right Just potatoes, no oil, nothing else.
00:05:26.800 --> 00:05:30.033
Now, if you want to put some spices on it, maybe a little paprika you want?
00:05:30.053 --> 00:05:30.675
to dress it up Garlic powder.
00:05:30.696 --> 00:05:37.076
We've done things like that A little garlic powder a little fresh ground black pepper, stuff like that, but otherwise it's just potato.
00:05:37.637 --> 00:05:37.939
Right.
00:05:37.939 --> 00:05:40.778
So we mentioned processed sugar like that's a bad thing.
00:05:40.778 --> 00:05:43.276
So does that mean, oh, you can't have sweets eating this way?
00:05:43.276 --> 00:05:48.899
No, we just eat them in a new, different way that actually loves our bodies back, but we still love it.
00:05:48.899 --> 00:05:51.819
We still look forward to eating some sweet things.
00:05:51.819 --> 00:05:59.017
We don't eat sweets at every meal but we do enjoy sweet treats, but they're whole food sweet treats.
00:05:59.017 --> 00:06:02.696
They still taste as we do not believe what you can make with whole plain food.
00:06:03.310 --> 00:06:04.735
It is honestly.
00:06:04.975 --> 00:06:05.559
It's remarkable.
00:06:05.559 --> 00:06:17.360
This is why we never feel deprived, while we love this way of living, while we wake up every morning and look forward to it, because the thing is, you have so many memories connected with your meals.
00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:18.413
We need to talk about this.
00:06:18.413 --> 00:06:20.314
Coming up soon, we're going to talk more about this.
00:06:20.314 --> 00:06:29.096
You've got to have these foods that you love and that bring you those memories and that are tied to these specific events and that you just like the way they taste.
00:06:29.096 --> 00:06:30.574
You just enjoy living that way.
00:06:30.574 --> 00:06:31.197
You just like them.
00:06:31.197 --> 00:06:37.137
This is why diving doesn't work, but whole food, plant-based, when you know how to do it right, will skyrocket you to your health goals.
00:06:37.137 --> 00:06:38.394
It's amazing.
00:06:38.394 --> 00:06:40.315
All right, so let's think about some other things.
00:06:40.315 --> 00:06:44.016
Fast food, french fries those are vegan, not healthy, but they're vegan.
00:06:44.490 --> 00:06:45.473
Well, they're probably vegan.
00:06:46.752 --> 00:06:49.516
Well, okay, let's get into that it may depend on who makes it.
00:06:49.629 --> 00:06:53.016
Maybe they put some beef callow in it or some lard or something in it.
00:06:53.209 --> 00:06:54.214
Yeah, they could fry it in lard.
00:06:54.430 --> 00:06:58.694
They are vegan if made with maybe a peanut oil or something of that nature.
00:06:58.713 --> 00:07:03.216
Right, so not always, you can't assume Not always but probably.
00:07:03.810 --> 00:07:06.995
But I've heard and I've joked beer and french fries.
00:07:07.276 --> 00:07:11.398
They're vegan, but I would say neither is the most healthy for you.
00:07:11.398 --> 00:07:14.728
No, let's just be honest no.
00:07:14.889 --> 00:07:16.136
It's vegan but not sustainable.
00:07:16.430 --> 00:07:29.978
You brought up a good point there, because I think about how the oils and all these different things that are in these foods some things you think are vegan Like you got to a Mexican restaurant, you're trying to eat vegan and you order beans not knowing they've got lard in a lot of the beans.
00:07:29.978 --> 00:07:31.956
You need to be asking that question.
00:07:32.129 --> 00:07:33.415
Definitely ask the questions.
00:07:33.550 --> 00:07:41.098
Yeah, because you want to make sure it is at least vegan, right, but they do add some of these things that make it not healthy.
00:07:41.098 --> 00:07:46.999
This is why we have a lot of our members come to us and they've tried vegan and they just aren't healthy.
00:07:46.999 --> 00:07:51.134
They're gaining more weight, they're getting more cholesterol issues, high blood pressure issues.
00:07:51.134 --> 00:07:54.418
They're vegan, but they're eating the junk food vegan.
00:07:54.418 --> 00:07:55.500
And they don't know.
00:07:55.500 --> 00:08:01.875
They hadn't known the difference until they heard the podcast episode and all of a sudden they're going oh wait, a minute, I wasn't doing this exactly.
00:08:01.935 --> 00:08:06.536
Right, if I want to get health results, they were missing a few elements that made big differences.
00:08:06.730 --> 00:08:07.613
The key elements.
00:08:07.613 --> 00:08:12.913
These are key Vegan burgers, vegan sausages, vegan power bars what about those?
00:08:12.913 --> 00:08:14.298
Aren't they healthy?
00:08:15.389 --> 00:08:16.980
Well, they're vegan, they're plant-based.
00:08:16.980 --> 00:08:19.754
They're both vegan, I think that's about all I could say about them.
00:08:20.137 --> 00:08:20.598
That's it.
00:08:20.598 --> 00:08:21.725
They're vegan, they're very processed.
00:08:22.185 --> 00:08:26.596
They'll use a lot of fats to try to mimic the flavor, the textures of meat.
00:08:27.177 --> 00:08:27.336
Right.
00:08:27.785 --> 00:08:31.334
And sometimes those veggie burgers look a little too much like the real thing.
00:08:31.725 --> 00:08:31.824
Right.
00:08:31.824 --> 00:08:33.691
And so you gotta ask what's in there?
00:08:33.691 --> 00:08:35.274
Read the ingredients label.
00:08:35.274 --> 00:08:38.412
Don't just read the label for grams of stuff.
00:08:38.412 --> 00:08:40.417
Read what's actually in it.
00:08:40.725 --> 00:08:43.129
And don't read the billboard on the front of the package.
00:08:43.129 --> 00:08:47.197
Yeah, all of the vegan burger 100% healthy, all plate-based, yes, yeah.
00:08:47.197 --> 00:08:49.895
Don't leave the lies on the billboard.
00:08:49.895 --> 00:08:51.725
Look at the ingredients list on there.
00:08:51.725 --> 00:08:54.474
That's where it'll tell you the important information.
00:08:54.825 --> 00:09:01.217
Yes, so many of these foods that are labeled vegan and healthy, they're still junk food.
00:09:01.217 --> 00:09:05.494
Vegan processed food that's highly processed is still junk food.
00:09:05.494 --> 00:09:09.725
Right, they're all vegan, but vegan does not equal healthy.
00:09:09.725 --> 00:09:14.664
That's what we want you to walk away from this episode with today Vegan does not equal healthy.
00:09:15.408 --> 00:09:19.464
And I'll also add here, though, that the word healthy is not well regulated.
00:09:19.484 --> 00:09:20.767
Oh, it's not like that.
00:09:20.807 --> 00:09:25.618
There's a specific criteria that this food item must meet before it can put healthy on it.
00:09:25.926 --> 00:09:27.129
Oh no, even in the title.
00:09:27.129 --> 00:09:28.634
Let's talk about that for a minute.
00:09:28.634 --> 00:09:32.705
We have a friend who had some shredded potatoes that were a brand.
00:09:32.705 --> 00:09:34.610
Oh no, those were simply.
00:09:34.649 --> 00:09:35.833
Those were simply potatoes.
00:09:35.953 --> 00:09:36.095
Yeah.
00:09:36.725 --> 00:09:39.753
And it gives you the idea that it's nothing but potato in the product.
00:09:39.873 --> 00:09:40.575
It's just potatoes.
00:09:40.575 --> 00:09:42.527
It's simply potatoes, right and when you look at the ingredient list.
00:09:42.547 --> 00:09:45.475
There are chemicals and oils and all kinds of things in them.
00:09:45.825 --> 00:09:49.174
Right, and you think of the frozen dinner company called Healthy Something.
00:09:49.174 --> 00:09:53.075
Maybe we should name it titles, but I think you all know what we're talking about here.
00:09:53.115 --> 00:09:53.235
Yes.
00:09:53.725 --> 00:09:55.471
Just because it's called healthy doesn't mean it's healthy.
00:09:55.471 --> 00:09:58.725
So you need to really start reading that ingredients label.
00:09:58.725 --> 00:10:02.174
So whole food plant based is vegan.
00:10:02.174 --> 00:10:06.273
You don't eat the animal products and things like that, apart from honey, like we mentioned.
00:10:06.273 --> 00:10:08.037
Some eat honey, some don't.
00:10:08.037 --> 00:10:11.113
You know, just because your whole food plant makes it doesn't mean you do or you don't.
00:10:11.113 --> 00:10:13.229
It's just kind of personal preference.
00:10:13.229 --> 00:10:14.894
Some people do Some people don't.
00:10:14.894 --> 00:10:17.049
But this is the difference.
00:10:17.049 --> 00:10:21.254
You can eat vegan and be totally unhealthy, be eating junk food and things like that.
00:10:21.254 --> 00:10:26.113
You're not getting the whole foods, you're not getting the greens and the things that you need.
00:10:26.113 --> 00:10:27.727
So really focus.
00:10:27.727 --> 00:10:34.371
As you're starting this journey, you've even been on it for a long time and you're thinking I'm vegan, I don't know why I'm not getting healthy.
00:10:34.725 --> 00:10:38.115
I'm still struggling with weight issues, still struggling with pain in my joints.
00:10:38.115 --> 00:10:42.695
I mean, one of the issues we had early on were the pressed out oils.
00:10:42.815 --> 00:10:43.255
Oh, my goodness.
00:10:43.784 --> 00:10:50.278
They were all vegetable and source, but they were still causing us a lot of problems because of the imbalance with the omega fatty acids.
00:10:50.725 --> 00:10:52.711
Well, I'm sure the cheese and the sour cream and all the dairy.
00:10:52.730 --> 00:10:54.274
Well, they did not help at all.
00:10:54.394 --> 00:11:01.725
no, For the dairy queen did not help, with her cholesterol going up and her arteries getting clogged and hearing the blood rushing through her neck.
00:11:01.725 --> 00:11:03.532
Yeah, all that stuff was not healthy either.
00:11:03.784 --> 00:11:09.797
But inflammation, pain, those types of things can still persist with a vegan type diet.
00:11:09.937 --> 00:11:19.618
Absolutely, because even after we cut out many of the animal products, I mean, we're still eating some of the plant based oils, some of the things like Jared was saying.
00:11:19.898 --> 00:11:20.759
Like grape seed oil.
00:11:20.940 --> 00:11:26.022
Grape seed oil, we heard it was healthy and started eating it and I had the worst joint pain and we put in.
00:11:26.022 --> 00:11:26.684
The world is going on.
00:11:26.684 --> 00:11:31.316
Not to mention, oil is one of the highest calorie things that you can eat.
00:11:31.316 --> 00:11:36.725
It is a very high calorie, so you don't want to be putting spoonfuls of oil on your stuff.
00:11:36.725 --> 00:11:39.140
Learn how to saute without it.
00:11:39.140 --> 00:11:39.725
Learn how to bake without it.
00:11:39.725 --> 00:11:45.725
These are the kind of things we show you how to do inside of our membership, inside of our course that's coming up.
00:11:45.725 --> 00:11:50.705
These are the things you've got to know to be able to get to the level that you want to be with your health.
00:11:50.705 --> 00:11:55.697
So just because it's vegan on the label, don't just buy it and assume.
00:11:55.697 --> 00:11:57.705
Start reading the ingredients label.
00:11:57.705 --> 00:11:59.451
What is actually in there?
00:11:59.451 --> 00:12:02.684
How much oil, how much sugar Does it have it at all?
00:12:02.684 --> 00:12:04.393
I mean, so many things have it.
00:12:04.393 --> 00:12:05.538
They don't need it.
00:12:05.538 --> 00:12:06.684
There's still junk food.
00:12:06.684 --> 00:12:12.297
How many colorings and flavorings artificial or natural are in there?
00:12:12.297 --> 00:12:15.636
Look at these things you can't pronounce on the label.
00:12:15.636 --> 00:12:20.133
Right, it can be vegan and still look foreign, look like a foreign language on the label.
00:12:20.133 --> 00:12:22.514
You don't want that.
00:12:22.514 --> 00:12:23.981
Run from that, sister.
00:12:23.981 --> 00:12:26.312
Run as far as you can, brother.
00:12:26.312 --> 00:12:28.071
Don't be picking up that product.
00:12:28.071 --> 00:12:29.349
You don't want that one.
00:12:29.349 --> 00:12:31.952
Choose the better products.
