Well, hello, friend, welcome back to the Power on Plants podcast, the place where we explore all things whole food, plant-based the delicious, rapid and simple way for lasting health.

00:01:22.177 --> 00:01:33.588
We're your hosts, jared and Anita Roussel, and today we're diving into one ingredient that's been popping up on labels and sparking some curiosity inside our community rice concentrate.

00:01:33.909 --> 00:01:41.721
We've received several questions from those of you who have spotted rice concentrate quote unquote in the ingredients list of some of their favorite whole food plant based products.

00:01:41.721 --> 00:01:49.814
It's understandable to be a little curious or even cautious when you see an unfamiliar ingredient, especially one that sounds a bit processed.

00:01:49.814 --> 00:01:55.402
We previously had the same questions ourselves, so, as always, we're here to share what we've learned with you.

00:01:55.762 --> 00:01:58.507
So what exactly is rice concentrate?

00:01:58.507 --> 00:02:05.510
Simply put, it is derived from you guessed it rice, usually the rice hulls.

00:02:05.510 --> 00:02:13.407
Now, the rice hull is the outer layer of the rice grain, which is typically removed during the processing of white rice.

00:02:13.407 --> 00:02:15.292
Now, that sounds great.

00:02:15.292 --> 00:02:20.290
So far, right, a discarded part of the rice that we actually should be eating.

00:02:20.290 --> 00:02:24.931
But why is it used in certain pre-prepared products?

00:02:24.931 --> 00:02:27.819
Eating?

00:02:27.819 --> 00:02:29.323
But why is it used in certain pre-prepared products?

00:02:29.704 --> 00:02:33.330
Well, primarily, the function of rice concentrate in food products is as a flow agent or an anti-caking agent.

00:02:33.330 --> 00:02:34.913
What exactly does that mean?

00:02:34.913 --> 00:02:40.312
Well, think about powder products like spice blends or even some dry baking mixes.

00:02:40.312 --> 00:02:45.671
These products have a tendency to clump together, especially when exposed to moisture.

00:02:45.671 --> 00:02:52.513
Rice concentrate helps to prevent this clumping, keeping the product free-flowing and easy for you to use.

00:02:52.513 --> 00:02:57.012
It absorbs moisture and keeps the individual particles separate.

00:02:57.012 --> 00:03:03.574
It can also be used in capsules or tablets to help the ingredients flow smoothly during manufacturing.

00:03:03.574 --> 00:03:07.022
And we all know what the real question is here, right?

00:03:07.022 --> 00:03:10.049
Is rice concentrate safe?

00:03:10.049 --> 00:03:13.100
This is probably the biggest question on your mind.

00:03:13.100 --> 00:03:19.021
The good news is that, generally speaking, rice concentrate is considered safe for consumption.

00:03:19.021 --> 00:03:22.909
It's a natural product derived from a common food source.

00:03:23.031 --> 00:03:37.463
However and this is yes, this is where we want to emphasize the importance of choosing organic products, especially when rice concentrate is involved.

00:03:37.463 --> 00:03:43.443
That's because non-organic rice may be exposed to pesticides and herbicides during cultivation.

00:03:43.443 --> 00:03:55.586
By choosing organic products that contain rice concentrate, you're ensuring that the rice used was grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms, aka GMO.

00:03:55.586 --> 00:04:04.552
Studies also show organic farming practices tend to yield lower levels of arsenic in the soil, further reducing the potential for that exposure.

00:04:04.552 --> 00:04:10.034
So we recommend looking for a certified organic label on products containing rice concentrate.

00:04:10.034 --> 00:04:13.713
So how does rice concentrate fit into a whole food, plant-based lifestyle?

00:04:13.713 --> 00:04:14.676
Great question.

00:04:14.676 --> 00:04:28.192
While it's not a whole food product itself, it's a minimally processed ingredient derived from a whole food and, in particular, a part of the rice that is beneficial and typically discarded from white rice In small amounts.

00:04:28.192 --> 00:04:35.115
As it's typically used in food products, it's unlikely to have any significant impact on the overall nutritional profile of your diet.

00:04:35.115 --> 00:04:44.055
The key, as always, is to focus on the bigger picture a diet that's rich in colorful, whole, unprocessed plant foods.

00:04:44.956 --> 00:04:51.795
And if you still feel concerned, you can always choose products that do not contain rice concentrate.

00:04:51.795 --> 00:05:06.161
There are plenty of whole food plant-based options available that simply don't use any anti-caking agents at all, but if you enjoy a product that happens to contain organic rice concentrate, there's generally no need to worry.

00:05:06.161 --> 00:05:13.665
So, to sum it up, rice concentrate is a functional ingredient used to prevent clumping in various food products.

00:05:13.665 --> 00:05:24.935
It's generally considered safe, but choosing organic products is recommended to minimize potential exposure to arsenic and pesticides and GMOs.

00:05:24.935 --> 00:05:30.384
As with any non-whole plant food, ingredient moderation and awareness are key.

00:05:30.384 --> 00:05:36.752
