What's in it for me? You may be asking yourself with the whole food plant based lifestyle if you haven't already started it. What's in it for me? What am I going to get out of this? And you know what? I don't blame you. That is a very reasonable question. So in this episode, we're going to talk about the benefits of whole food plant based living.
00:00:21.419 --> 00:00:39.179
You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a healthy plant based lifestyle.
00:00:36.088 --> 00:00:45.899
It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get me on the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love.
00:00:46.408 --> 00:01:02.189
If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte. And let's get started. So what is in it for you? What are the benefits of healthy plant based living?
00:01:02.579 --> 00:01:03.929
wiring minds want to know?
00:01:04.980 --> 00:01:30.629
And there's so many, it's hard to list them all in one episode. And I'm know we're gonna miss a lot of them. We'll be having people come on and talk about their experiences and the things that have happened in their lives and how it's changed our lives. And if you want to hear how it's changed my life and Jarrod, life, go back and listen to episode number one, it's completely changed things for us, we want you to know, first of all, one of the big benefits is that it's enjoyable.
00:01:30.750 --> 00:01:41.519
Because a lot of times you're used to doing things to try to get healthy that involve torture, I mean, sheer torture or miserable side effects.
00:01:36.989 --> 00:01:53.519
Right. So you think, well, if I can just get this diagnosis and get a certain medication, and then that comes with side effects? Well, there are no side effects to whole food plant based living except for the fact that you're going to feel a whole lot better regardless of what's going on.
00:01:53.549 --> 00:01:55.019
And that's a side effect I can handle.
00:01:55.049 --> 00:01:58.500
Yeah, I'll take that one.
00:01:55.049 --> 00:02:43.650
But there's no counting calories, counting points, keeping up with grams. I mean, think about just we've talked about this before, you know, you got to eat with your family or friends. And you're sitting there worried about adding up your points, figuring out how many grams if you're going to go over this or that to the to the detriment of your relationships, you know, you don't want to have to control your portions, watch everybody else eat huge platefuls of food while you feel like you have to eat one grain of rice. I mean, that's absolutely ridiculous. But if you're eating the right foods, hopefully plant based by nature is much more nutrient dense, much lower in calorie as a whole. Now there are some foods within this route way of eating that are, of course going to be higher in calories and others, you don't need to count calories, you just need somebody to show you so that you can be aware of what are those foods?
00:02:43.650 --> 00:03:13.169
And how do I not over indulge on those so that I can actually drop the pounds. It's a whole mindset shift. It's a formula you're not looking at, I've got to count this and keep up with that and weigh myself and keep up with this. It's just you're developing these new habits with these new simple formulas that over time become new habits. And then it's just the way you live, it's enjoyable. And you do it day after day after day. And you don't dread it and you don't dream of cheat days, and you don't have the side effects.
00:03:11.250 --> 00:03:13.169
It's just
00:03:14.280 --> 00:03:16.409
yeah, it's just what you just your daily life.
00:03:16.620 --> 00:03:27.569
Right. And then also, not only is it enjoyable, some of these are the reasons why it's enjoyable. It's delicious. To be there. Yeah, it's got a flavor.
00:03:24.870 --> 00:04:02.520
And if you've tried whole food plant base before and you thought I can't do it, you know, some of our clients have that story. I tried this before and I couldn't do it. The food didn't taste good. I just didn't know what to do. You've got to have great tasting foods, which is one of the reasons I've written the cookbook. I'm very passionate about that. Because I know that for it to work, it's got to taste good. It needs to be beautiful and colorful. You absolutely get that with healthy plant base. Where else do you walk in the store? That's not a painted box or something that's made to look like produce? Why did they make the boxes and bags colorful and bright? If you look at the colors, they're all the colors that produce?
00:04:02.579 --> 00:04:12.028
Well, they mimic nature and you look at things like children's cereal, they had the bright reds and the bright greens and all those even purples because we talked about Don't forget your purple produce.
00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:15.210
Yeah, that's by design.
00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:28.949
That's advertising, because we're created to gravitate toward the bright, beautiful colors that are naturally there that were created for you to love. So to wrap that up, it's beautiful, simple and delicious.
00:04:28.949 --> 00:04:36.209
And that makes it enjoyable. And that's one of the biggest benefits of healthy plant by sleeping. But what are the specific health benefits?
00:04:36.209 --> 00:04:46.769
Yes. Well, initially, one of the things that I noticed was improved digestion, that I would get indigestion whenever I ate the processed greasy foods,
00:04:47.220 --> 00:04:56.550
miserable after you ate it just reflects live in and some people live. I remember my father used to live on Tums and Rolaids and we won't even get into how unhealthy that is.
00:04:56.730 --> 00:05:10.470
Because we just think you know it's over the counter. It's not gonna cause problems. It can cause problems. So why not just eat the healthy natural whole plant foods that keep you from developing the indigestion and the heartburn in the first place.
00:05:10.649 --> 00:05:22.560
And I will say, since we started doing this, maybe you've had heartburn a couple times, and then later realized that there were some additives, some kind of chemical additives or flavor enhancers that were in it that I believe caused it.
00:05:22.949 --> 00:05:25.740
Alright, next is skin health.
00:05:22.949 --> 00:06:05.970
Now, many times people don't associate what you eat with your skin, because they don't seem like they're that closely linked, but you really couldn't be any further from the truth. A couple of examples of conditions would be acne, it is known that acne can be worsen with a lot of milk products. Because there are even though they're even if you're getting the better milk, and there are no added hormones, milk by nature has a lot of hormones in it. So if you need a lot of milk products, whether it be cheese, the actual milk, sour cream, jovis, whatever, you're getting a lot of those hormones from the cow in your system, and that can disrupt your own natural hormones. And that can create
00:06:06.119 --> 00:06:07.228
acne breakouts.
00:06:07.259 --> 00:06:12.509
Now, sometimes it can be minor, but sometimes they can get to the point where they're severe and their sister can can create scarring.
00:06:12.569 --> 00:06:20.399
So what they find a lot of times is teenagers who eat this way, don't get the same kind of breakouts. And that's been the case with our teenage children, they don't have that.
00:06:20.399 --> 00:06:38.788
And people often stop us and ask, what are you doing for their skin? What do you do for their skin? And, you know, we think about what are you putting on it? I mean, that's one of their main questions, what do you put on it? How do they wash it, and what we really need to look at is what's going on the inside of our body that's building our skin cells, and that's causing these things because there's a root issue.
00:06:38.788 --> 00:06:52.678
It's not just it's kind of like just taking a medicine to keep your blood pressure low, or just, what else would it be, I mean, any any of those thought processes like that, where you're treating a symptom, and you're not getting to the root cause of the problem managing
00:06:52.680 --> 00:06:55.079
it, but you're not really getting at the cause of it.
00:06:55.139 --> 00:07:04.408
And a lot of the times the cause is what you're eating, I've seen people cures a show with it, there are a lot of different things that people have cured by eating this way.
00:07:04.619 --> 00:07:33.209
We're not saying it's absolutely going to cure you, no matter what you have, you know, we're not saying that at all. But what we are saying is, it tends to make a lot of things a whole lot better. And we know that that's the case for us and our clients and tons of people around the world. I mean, get online and start googling whole food plant based changed my life, or, you know, cured me of or kept me from getting because they had genes that might have caused him to have this and but they've never developed it even though everybody else in their family has,
00:07:33.329 --> 00:07:56.819
do you find sometimes that you have difficulty thinking, recalling words, mental fog? Well, this can help that two studies have even shown with the mental clarity that a whole food plant based lifestyle can help give you that clarity in that focus. Because you need that to make it through your day, whether you're working, whether you're busy homeschooling mom, whatever the case may be, we need to be able to think clearly.
00:07:57.418 --> 00:08:24.149
Yeah, that was one of the huge benefits that we got from doing this as well. And then decreased anxiety and depression can also be a great side effect to healthy plant based living, meaning depression decreased as well. And then researchers have also shown that plant based diets helped to prevent and treat some of the top causes of death in the world, like heart disease, high blood pressure, and type two diabetes.
00:08:24.779 --> 00:08:44.700
So go into heart disease. Well, it's Heart and Vascular. I want to lump those two together, because they're obviously interrelated. Because your hearts pumping, pumping the blood, your bloods got to go through your veins. But I think so many times we seem to just hear about heart disease, and we don't think about the vascular.
00:08:41.340 --> 00:08:48.029
And this was something that was huge for Anita, that she she can even tell you.
00:08:48.509 --> 00:09:18.899
Oh, yeah, he's pointing to me. It's my turn key you? Um, yeah. I mean, I used to lay on my like sleep on my side. And when I would lay on my left side, I would hear whooshing, I don't know how to say it. I'm not going to hear it in my ears when I had an ultrasound. Now when I was on my neck, and that showed that I had some problems with narrowing of those vessels in my carotid arteries in my neck. I don't have that anymore.
00:09:18.899 --> 00:09:22.859
I never get it. I can sleep on both sides. no problems at all.
00:09:22.918 --> 00:09:30.479
It's gone. And that's one of the amazing benefits of this too. So it affects the health of your vascular system. What about cholesterol?
00:09:31.049 --> 00:09:48.779
Well, that's a very good question. How much cholesterol is there implant? none, none. So you will reduce your level of cholesterol because you're not eating any in the plants. And it really is just that simple. All right. So next.
00:09:49.529 --> 00:09:55.620
Yeah, if you could just be here behind the scenes and see some things that happen.
00:09:51.870 --> 00:09:55.620
When you're not listening in.
00:09:55.679 --> 00:10:03.120
Sometimes things start to get deep and sciency because Jared and I like to go Well, basically deepest sciency
00:10:03.629 --> 00:10:04.649
occupational hazard.
00:10:04.679 --> 00:10:13.440
Yeah. And we really we both love research and we dig into all this stuff. And we don't want to tell you something that's not backed by research and we don't want to do something that's not backed either. So but we
00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:20.279
also want this to be actionable. Yeah. At the end of the day, if you know a lot of stuff, but you don't put it into practice. It means nothing.
00:10:20.340 --> 00:11:21.059
Absolutely. And while we're on the heart, I want to talk about chest pain. I just read a woman's I wish I had had it and just read it to you. Her testimonial was amazing. I may even try to get her on the show to talk to you about but she was having so much difficulty she had had like a quintuple bypass that's five bypasses around your heart because the blood was not flowing through her heart and her cardiologists were telling her you know, now after that she needed stent, she ended up getting something like eight stents placed and she was miserable. still having chest pain every day. Yeah, I mean chest pain every day, even after our her bypass, even after her stents. And the doctors are, she really wasn't getting any answers. And she happened upon something by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, who is an amazing plant based physician that specializes in cardiology. And she was he was able to help her turn it around with a lot of the things we're sharing with you the same types of things. And she within really was it two weeks,
00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:34.139
it was a few weeks, two or three weeks, something like that, you might think this would take two or three years, no, some of these changes. Now, individual results may vary. But no changes can be within a few weeks. And hers
00:11:34.139 --> 00:11:50.039
were I mean, it was literally from what she was telling the story, it was two weeks, and she was having no chest pain. And nobody was offering that to her as an option. But she just needed to change the way she was eating and have things in a better way.
00:11:46.590 --> 00:12:41.970
And still eat things she loves not eating this way can also reduce your risk for certain types of cancer that is scientifically proven, it can reduce your risk, it can also help to reverse certain types of cancer, if you know specifically what to do. And there's somebody we absolutely love, we have followed him for years. And his name is Chris work. And his website is Chris speaks cancer.com Do yourself a favor, if you or anybody you know is dealing with a cancer diagnosis, please check his stuff out, get into his square one program as quickly as you can and go through it. It's amazing. And he has also written two books, check those out as well. But he teaches a lot of the same principles that we're teaching from a little bit different of an angle talking to people who've had cancer, what their experiences have been, what they've tried for certain things, how it's worked for them. But his story, Jared may want to share a little bit more his
00:12:41.970 --> 00:12:59.639
story was that in 2003, he was diagnosed with a stage three c colon cancer. Now he opted to go through surgery, but after that they were recommending chemo, but he decided that he didn't want to do that. And he wanted to use nutrition to make himself well.
00:12:55.620 --> 00:13:13.500
So if you or someone you know is in the situation, then obviously you need to decide what's best for you. But we highly, highly recommend checking them out at crispy cancer.com. So the next one is something Miss Anita knows a little something about
00:13:13.559 --> 00:14:47.519
Yeah, energy. Mm hmm. I had absolutely no energy. I mean, honestly, I found myself just barely surviving the day I felt like I was just watching my life pass me by. And I had so many things I wanted to do. But I couldn't do them. I wanted to play with my children. I wanted to travel more. I wanted to build a business. I wanted to be able to help people make an impact. Yeah. And how am I going to help anybody, including my family, or anybody else? If I couldn't even think clearly or have enough energy to get myself up off the couch. I mean, I was miserable. Again, our stories in Episode One, go back and hear it if you want to hear the whole story. But our energy is better now than it was that I ever remember it being. I mean, I literally have to force myself to go to bed at night. And it's, it's true. It's unbelievable how great I feel as far as the energy goes, that has changed so much for me night and day difference. Another thing I wish I had known. I wish I hadn't done this, it does decrease your risk for developing kidney stones. So, yeah, that's just something I can't go back and do and I'm still honestly having to deal with the side effects of the way I ate for all those years, even though it's been years since we've been living this way. You know, it takes time for things done, do I know it's going to improve as time goes on. But it's just one of those things that you know, sometimes you just have to realize this is a lifestyle, you're not going to start it and have everything immediately change or expect something to change in one month or two months. That's not realistic.
00:14:43.860 --> 00:14:54.120
Although, like we just told, you know, some things can change in a week or two. focus on making progress. Don't think about making everything perfect.
00:14:54.120 --> 00:15:16.649
You're just going to make progress day by day by day. And the more you do this, the more wonderful changes You're going to experience now, it also helps to reduce inflammation. I had severe joint pain and huge jaredite all day long. I mean, he would talk about eight. And then when we started doing this after a while, he said he never he noticed that things had changed.
00:15:16.679 --> 00:15:24.929
Well, for me, I had shoulder impingement, which is basically you've got verses that are pinched, and they're inflamed and they create pain.
00:15:22.289 --> 00:15:33.659
For me, it was never something that caused a lot of debilitation. But it was an ongoing thing when it's I'm a side sleeper. So at nighttime, if I slept on my side, it would flare up, I've tossed in turn.
00:15:33.929 --> 00:15:49.230
But once we started this, it was really funny because it was almost an afterthought, where a few months into it. I told him, I said, You know what, my shoulders haven't bothered me in a few months, I hadn't really noticed it, because it was just so gradual. And then all of a sudden, it was gone.
00:15:49.470 --> 00:16:25.080
And for me, I was constantly in pain, I had excruciating joint pain in my finger joints in my wrist and my elbows, elbows were severe. My shoulders were it was awful. I mean, I remember standing in the shower, crying just because it hurts so much to try to put pressure on my head just to wash my hair. That's how much pain I was in. I was begging people to pray for me. And just trying to figure out anything that would help. And it was amazing. When we went off the oils, that was huge, because they're pressed out high, calorie packed, and most of them are highly inflammatory.
00:16:25.110 --> 00:16:35.759
Well, a lot of them have a lot of high omega six fatty acids, which most of those can be pro inflammatory. Yeah, not all of them, but many of them.
00:16:32.340 --> 00:16:37.769
And why would you want to take something out of its natural form anyway?
00:16:37.919 --> 00:16:54.929
Yeah, it does. It doesn't make sense. And when you start realizing how easy it is to bank to saute to do all these things without oil, you just don't miss it, and it's gone. But you don't miss the pain that's gone either. Actually, that's what you're celebrating, because everything still tastes good.
00:16:54.929 --> 00:17:26.640
And it's super easy to do. But you start feeling amazing. You know, we have a client who had neck pain when she first started with us. And she had tried to eat whole food plant based before but once she had the system that we had developed and started going through it, and Hannah stared at answer questions as she went, she said, You know, my pain is a nine out of 10, actually nine and a half out of 10 when we first started what she said, She's very specific that way, and she said, um, you know, after a while, it was kind of like Jared, I started noticing, hey, I'm hardly having any pain at all.
00:17:26.640 --> 00:17:31.650
And then one day, she woke up and there was no pain. And she just couldn't believe it.
00:17:29.759 --> 00:17:37.440
Because she had dealt with that for so long. And it's almost like we convince ourselves, well, I'm just getting older.
00:17:34.650 --> 00:18:04.799
That's just how it is. I mean, I've even seen memes about this stuff on Facebook people posted into the wall. Yeah, I heard it's that take this medication that might get medication. And it's joking around about how I'm older. I'm just going to have to live with it. And the truth is, you don't always have to live with it. I mean, sure, not everybody is going to have every one of these things reverse. But isn't it worth a chance to try absolutely got nothing to lose here
00:18:04.890 --> 00:18:07.349
and everything to gain.
00:18:04.890 --> 00:18:16.380
The sad part of that too is it almost seems like a badge of honor that I've lived this long to now hurt so badly that I need to take this medication. And it really does not have to be that way.
00:18:16.440 --> 00:18:42.720
Now, you want to think about you don't want to Well, yeah, it can increase the number of years you live. I mean, there are studies that show that as well. Look at the blues end studies and and they were they looked at different areas and how long they lived and the quality of life that they had, as they got older look into that. If you haven't ever it's very interesting. But the thing is, is it's not just about the number of years you live, you want quality years, you want to feel great during those years.
00:18:39.359 --> 00:19:00.240
Other things that healthy plant based living has been found to reverse and prevent arthritis, type two diabetes. I mean, we've even had clients start coming off their insulin, insulin, many people have come completely off insulin, obesity, we lost over 55 pounds. We weren't even trying to lose weight. That wasn't
00:19:00.240 --> 00:19:00.930
even our goal.
00:19:01.019 --> 00:19:06.329
And one of our clients recently went from a 14 to size four she said she was even trying to lose weight.
00:19:06.329 --> 00:19:14.279
She didn't even believe it. Someone told her like know that. They were going clothes shopping. And then her friend said No, that's too big for you.
00:19:11.549 --> 00:19:17.039
No, it's not. I've always been the size. And you know what? The frame was correct?
00:19:17.099 --> 00:19:23.400
Yeah, it had dropped down to a size six at that point. And now she's down to a size four.
00:19:20.519 --> 00:19:52.440
And she just loves how she's eating. And she said, You know what, I found food freedom. And we use that now all the time, because that's really what this way of living is you think it's going to be some restrictive thing that's going to keep you from the good stuff and all you find is food freedom and it's wonderful. And then there are things like autoimmune diseases I mean Fes help repair your gut, and of course get damage has been linked with autoimmune disease formation. So whole plant foods can help to heal your gut and to prevent you from developing autoimmune diseases.
00:19:52.589 --> 00:20:13.920
Many people report migraines going away and the list goes on and on and on. Now there may be other things at play here. With any of these conditions, obviously, that's why we teach our clients about more than just food. But it's clear that changing how you eat can have a huge impact on your health. And it's one of the best and most rewarding places for you to start.
00:20:14.099 --> 00:20:24.900
So with any of these things we always recommend be followed by your primary care provider and have a thorough history and examination just so that if there's anything else going on, it can be addressed.
00:20:25.049 --> 00:20:52.799
When the other thing is, when you start eating healthy plant based, you really need to have somebody follow you, especially if you're already on medications. Like, let's say you have diabetes and you want to start healthy plant based Well, since a lot of people do have their need for insulin decrease, and some people even come off their insulin completely. If your blood sugar start getting better and better and better and you're still on the same amount of insulin or medication for your diabetes, your blood sugars can bottom out and you can end up in real trouble. You may
00:20:52.799 --> 00:21:11.309
be overtreated, they can get too low. And that's also dangerous. Same thing for high blood pressure. As things heal and improve the medications may make your blood pressure go too low. And then blood doesn't go where it needs to go. One of the common side effects of that would be lightheadedness, dizziness, almost passing out.
00:21:09.210 --> 00:21:11.309
So
00:21:11.490 --> 00:21:18.569
definitely be followed by a provider. Oh, absolutely. And then what anything else you wanted to say?
