00:00:01.020 --> 00:00:54.570
As you scroll through your Facebook or your Instagram account, what do you see? As you swipe up? You see pictures and pictures, friends, families, co workers, whatever. But what do you see? Do you see pictures of food, pictures of the people, perfect pictures, perfect pictures of plates and perfect plates sitting on perfect tables and perfect tables with perfect family sitting around them and perfect families with the perfect individual, whoever accounts you're looking at. And all you see there is just perfection. What's the natural tendency to do to compare yourself to what you think you see on that screen. But is that truly What's going on?

00:00:54.929 --> 00:01:00.659
comparison can be the thief of joy. And that's what we're talking about today. In this episode.

00:01:01.380 --> 00:01:10.140
You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host Jarrod and Anita resell.

00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:35.969
Were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get me on the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love. If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started.

00:01:37.319 --> 00:02:17.009
If you're active on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, whatever the platform is, and you're scrolling through those images, regretfully, much of your time will be spent comparing yourself to these other individuals. I mean, it's just natural because you're peeking into what's going on in their lives. It's just a natural tendency to want to say, am I doing that? Am I measuring up to whatever this is. But what you need to realize one, like what we've said before, comparison is a thief of joy. But also is this really what's going on, I mean, or is this real life for that individual?

00:02:17.069 --> 00:02:45.629
Exactly. Because you're just getting this peek into what they want you to see what they're posting, and there it is on the screen. And that's not necessarily a bad thing unless you start comparing yourself to it. And Jared, now I want to be sure that you are not having things stand in your way, when you start this way of living, we want to make sure that all those things that could block you from having success or whole food plant based living there removed. And we want to work with you to do that

00:02:45.628 --> 00:02:47.218
we want to set you up for success.

00:02:47.280 --> 00:03:45.180
And one of the ways that you do that is realize that your life number one is not their life. So even if they are putting everything out there, and it's all true, maybe you work five days a week, and they don't work at all. So that might affect how you prepare your food differently from them. So we're talking about whole food plant based living here, right. But even within whole food, plant based living and what all that means there can be differences in how you live this out. And that's perfectly okay, you may need to prepare your food differently than them. Like we were saying just them because you work more than they do, or you work less than they do. And that's okay. Now, you're not going to have the same path as others, even up to this point, your journey is not been exactly the same as anybody else's. And it won't be exactly the same moving forward either. Right? So you need to recognize that and just give yourself the ability to live this out in the way that works best for you.

00:03:45.419 --> 00:03:47.848
And I would even say give yourself permission.

00:03:47.969 --> 00:04:13.110
Yeah. That's good. So even within the guidelines of a whole food plant based eating, you may have different preferences than others. Maybe you really love kale. And right now for some reason, they just don't like it. They like other cruciferous better they like cabbage or brussel sprouts or broccoli or cauliflower, right?

00:04:07.860 --> 00:04:21.329
And even your own preferences can change as you go. Let me tell you, this just happened to me. It's happened several times on this journey to me, but this most recent time, I

00:04:21.329 --> 00:04:22.800
never thought we'd see this happen.

00:04:22.829 --> 00:04:42.750
Now I was floored coming sessions, really. I mean, I was floored I sat down to eat the last few times we've had pasta dishes, and we eat whole grain pasta. So that was one big switch that we made near the beginning. But we don't eat it super often because it is processed. It's not highly processed as some other foods.

00:04:39.300 --> 00:05:26.160
But we do eat some pasta from time to time we just choose to eat it differently. And there are other ways you can eat it too, that we'll talk about later. But with the whole grain pastas, we had this dinner and I had this lovely sauce that was just filled with vegetables and black Beluga lentils and it was just one Wonderful and it was kind of meaty, and it was just really good. And then I had this pasta. And I found myself picking through the pasta to get to the sauce because I didn't want the pasta, I just honestly, I would have been so happy. If I could have just had a big huge bowl of sauce. That's what I want it and these types of things will happen to you as you go. I'm not saying the exact same thing will happen, right?

00:05:23.250 --> 00:05:38.490
So don't say, Oh, well, Anita had this happen with pasta. So eventually I'll stop craving it or wanting it, that may not be the case for you. Because again, you don't want to compare yourself. And don't expect perfection from yourself.

00:05:34.920 --> 00:05:54.180
Either. You want to have mercy and grace on yourself on this journey and just enjoy it and embrace it. One change after the next and pretty soon you've got a whole different life than you had before. And the whole point of it is is not to be like someone else is to be the best version of you.

00:05:55.589 --> 00:06:20.310
And I would even say not only not compare yourself to others, but don't compare yourself to where you see yourself down the road. Whether is that a year from now, five years from now. Because you may have this ideal of what you think you will become or what you think you want in your life may not head specifically in that direction. That may not be exactly where life takes you.

00:06:16.410 --> 00:06:32.339
And so if you're stuck on I'm going there, then if you don't, then you'll start to get concerned or upset or again, it'll Rob that joy because you're comparing yourself to something that may not be real

00:06:32.370 --> 00:07:09.689
well let me just say this doesn't just apply to food, it applies to so many different areas in your life. So keep that in mind as we're going through this. Now this is specifically about seasons though. Think about what foods you prefer, do you prefer in the colder seasons like in winter, would you prefer a warmer food most people do, you may find that you prefer different things during different times. So say it's a colder month is winter, you might prefer soup, or a warm casserole or warm dish. And in warmer months, you might prefer something like a cooler, banana, nice cream or

00:07:09.899 --> 00:07:10.800
nice salad.

00:07:11.189 --> 00:07:11.790
salad,

00:07:11.819 --> 00:07:15.420
something we haven't had recently, but that I enjoy a lot is Texas caviar.

00:07:15.509 --> 00:07:20.339
That's really good too.

00:07:15.509 --> 00:07:34.709
So all that to say, in different seasons, your preferences may even change. So don't compare yourself to others. Your journey is your own and your journey may change based on the seasons, based on your schedule. Based on your different preferences.

00:07:31.769 --> 00:07:48.660
Maybe your preferences will change based on memories you have associated with foods you love. I grew up eating peaches and cream oatmeal, I have a lot of good memories associated with that dress, delete it, yes, but I do not eat it out of a packet with a man's face on the front.

00:07:50.189 --> 00:07:58.110
You know, I eat my peaches and cream, oatmeal and a totally different way I make my own at home. It's very simple to do.

00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:43.350
And it's just delicious. I still enjoy because there's memories associated My mom used to always make bean dip for me, I absolutely love being debt particularly made with pinto beans. Now we eat hummus dip and other bean dips as well white bean dips. But I really liked that one the best because that's what she made for me. And I just feel great when I eat it, I enjoy it. And so that's kind of one of my comfort feeds, you can still keep those same things, the same old favorites, you're just going to have them in a different way and build a life you love. But know that your favorites may differ from others. And that's okay, it may even differ from yourself as you go. Now, let's go into this.

00:08:37.860 --> 00:09:05.190
Some prefer to eat all raw, right? Some like a little less raw than others. Or maybe you decide you want to eat, mostly cooked. And then you just hit a phase in your life where you think I want to try all raw. And that's okay. When you get to healthy plant base within these boundaries. This is basically what healthy plant based is right. And we have a whole episode on that. So

00:09:05.190 --> 00:09:29.159
number two, touch on it just a moment here. So with whole food plant based, it's trying to eliminate meat, eggs and dairy. So animal products, you're also eliminating a lot of refined foods such as the sugars, the oils, the white flowers, and you're also eliminating or avoiding as much as possible the highly processed foods, things that tend to come in a box in your freezer section.

00:09:29.190 --> 00:09:37.980
These are all the things that just sabotage your health over time. So but you don't want to think like we always say, you don't want to think oh, I have to get rid of all that stuff.

00:09:38.009 --> 00:09:41.429
It's not about what's leaving.

00:09:38.009 --> 00:10:10.830
It's about what's coming in in its place. Don't ever leave a hole where those things are that you've taken out of your life you have to replace it each one with something amazing that you love. Well the things that you can enjoy healthy plant based vegetables fruits, legumes, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and plant based sauces. You have had different experiences up to this point. So your body's going to be different and in a different place based on what it needs.

00:10:06.269 --> 00:10:28.019
This may cause you to want certain foods over others at certain times in your life. So again, this is how your preferences might change, and your journey is going to be different at different points in time. Just focus on getting a variety of the good step, learn how to listen to your body, it will tell you when it's unhappy.

00:10:28.200 --> 00:10:51.419
And you know, it'll let you know think about I think back about this episode, or actually, it was a commercial, it was a commercial. And you see this family holding their stomachs in their stomachs are all moving back and forth. They've just had this huge male, senior call, they're going up or down stairs, and you just hear this is the fullest the Fuller's have ever felt folks, you know, I think it was it Pepto bismol

00:10:52.049 --> 00:10:53.789
or Episode One of Yeah,

00:10:53.820 --> 00:11:19.350
something like that. And you think about that. And, you know, it's just your body tells you when you've had something that makes you feel miserable that it doesn't want that thing that's not good for it. If you're having reflux all the time, or you're having low energy and your your joints are hurting your all those things are signs your body's telling you something needs to change.

00:11:15.450 --> 00:11:48.149
It's not telling you put a cream on me or, you know, put some kind of probably medicine is going to fix it right? Yes, medicine, yes, there's always a time and place for it. But you need to get to the root of what's causing it to be that way so that you can remove it and put something better in its place. We want you to know and remember, again, your journey is your own. Don't get stuck in the comparison trap. It's the thief of your joy. keep the momentum going and join community with others who are on the same path.

00:11:48.360 --> 00:12:06.779
