Well, lactose is the primary sugar found in milk.

Now, as infants, we have the enzymes needed to break that down.

Now, I used to think that they pulled the lactose out of that, but they don't.

What they do is they add the enzyme that we no longer have, which is lactase, so that it pre-breaks it down for you.
