00:00:54.210 --> 00:01:30.450
Hi, friend. Welcome to the back porch with us. We're just hanging out talking about one of our favorite snacks. We were out here just thinking about the things that we absolutely love to eat on a regular basis. And this is one of the tops of all of our favorite snacks. Guess what it is? hummus. We absolutely love hummus, pretty much bean depths of any kind really, because all hummus is is mashed up bean dip that's made with garbanzo beans or chickpeas. But you can make bean dips with white beans and pinto beans or

00:01:30.510 --> 00:01:31.799
black eyed peas

00:01:31.829 --> 00:01:34.170
like IP, black names. Mm hmm.

00:01:34.379 --> 00:01:35.700
You've done Black Eyed Peas, those

00:01:35.700 --> 00:01:58.200
are good white beans, any kind of bean that's mashed up is going to make a bean dip that's out of this world. If you just add those sauces and spices and citrus and things that you'd love to make it tastes like you want it to. Of course, you know mine If you know me for any length of time, it has to have some sort of hot sauce in it, because I'm a hot sauce fan. But anyway, it has to have flavor.

00:01:54.629 --> 00:02:10.409
It's that flavor. So with hummus, what is the challenge of buying it at the store now we can just go to the store there's a Publix right at the front of the neighborhood. And we can just grab a box of hummus or a container yeah container.

00:02:10.468 --> 00:02:15.239
And they even have different flavors. I've seen bell pepper flavor, I've seen some various other ones.

00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:26.069
But we are always trying to eat less oil at least less oil and health. Well, that's not a healthy form is pressed down and right out of this package.

00:02:22.439 --> 00:02:29.340
So you think of an oil that's naturally in a natural nut butter that's just blended up.

00:02:29.430 --> 00:02:44.069
We don't worry about that as much. We try not to eat a lot of things like that they are higher calorie and a lot of oils overall in your diet. It's just not good. Low fat is the best way to go. But we do believe that good fats are good for you.

00:02:44.069 --> 00:03:46.650
And so it's not like you have to avoid all of those things all the time. But we do want to avoid that added oils because that's some way that you can just easily cut out something that's highly inflammatory that can make your joints a can cause a lot of problems with your vascular health. So with hummus, like if we're going to the store and just walking down the aisles, we're gonna look at the ingredients, does that have a lot of oil in it nine times out of 10 they do. And so what we do is it's very simple to bring the instant pot with us or just to put a pot of beans on to cook while we're getting ready in the morning. We're gonna go out and ride by Sir walk the nature trails or go to the beach or whatever it is we're going to do if we're in a city if we're going to explore the city go shopping. Well, it's easy to cook a pot of beans or better yet, if you're in a really big hurry, grab a can have beans from the store or attach your pack of beans which are the little cardboard boxes. All you have to do is watch out for the sodium and those rinse them off if you need to.

00:03:46.680 --> 00:03:49.409
That'll get rid of probably about half of the sodium that's in it.

00:03:49.439 --> 00:04:09.810
Yeah, at least and then you just dump those beans into a blender most places now have a blender with some kind of tamper or a high speed blender. You add a little liquid like some lemon juice and don't forget the lemon zest because that's great for you. And then put in a little bit of apple cider vinegar just to give it that bite that hummus

00:04:10.199 --> 00:04:10.979
Tanginess

00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:14.159
Yeah, it's really great.

00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:37.110
Put in a couple of cloves of garlic whole You don't even have to chop those up because the blenders gonna chop that for you or food processor if you haven't had one of those or you can just mash it in a bowl. If you want that thicker, a little bit more thick oiliness will like consistency. Of course most hummus has crushed sesame butter in it which is known as tahini.

00:04:32.490 --> 00:04:51.209
That's what tahini is. So it's like a nut butter, but it's a seed butter made from Sesame seeds. Usually I would put maybe a tablespoon of that if you're not trying to totally eliminate oil for some reason it does have the natural oil of the seeds.

00:04:47.610 --> 00:04:59.399
But normally you don't eat a lot of seeds. You're not to sit down and eat five seeds like you would get in a table strainer to assess me better. So you can leave

00:04:59.399 --> 00:04:59.970
that out.

00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:06.089
don't even have to put it but if you're just you're a traditionalist and you know that your hummus has got to have that,

00:05:06.449 --> 00:05:08.459
that that authentic flavor,

00:05:08.490 --> 00:05:44.220
the authentic flavor or the authentic field and go for it add a little tahini, you can buy that online get it a lot of stores today. Drop a tablespoon of that in there. If you don't have it cashew butter is a great substitute. It makes a wonderful Hemis, throw all those things in there, blend them together. And if you want to get fancy, you can add Raul bell pepper, just a few chunks of that you can add some sun dried tomatoes, you could add some pimentos like you put in permanent cheese just drain them first. Or you can add some roasted bell pepper and have roasted bell pepper hummus, completely up to you what you like in your hummus. It's just really easy to make

00:05:44.310 --> 00:05:53.279
now one that I would enjoy but Anita not so much would be olives. That would be amazing. I mean, it's not so much of an olive fan.

00:05:53.310 --> 00:06:02.819
No, I like pretty much all fruits and vegetables all is for some reason I've just never been a fan. But boy do the people in my house. Love those.

00:05:59.790 --> 00:06:10.709
So if Yeah, that'd be great. If you like olives all the time, this would be really good. Even like the dried olives that we got one time where they do remember what cotton they are.

00:06:09.029 --> 00:06:10.709
They're

00:06:10.709 --> 00:06:12.689
black olives or black olives.

00:06:12.810 --> 00:06:55.110
I can't remember the name of them son foods is the brand that makes him though and they are quite tasty if you like and I wish I could. They're really good. We might try to drop a link in the description if we can find any online for you. And those would be great in there any anything drive like that or dried scent dried, dried, dried sun dried tomato. Yeah, that'd be good too. But think of what you like spice it up cumin is a great thing to put a few pinches of because it gives it that high messy chili like flavor. You can also use chili powder, smoked paprika. Those are some of our Hemis go to additions. Play around with it, you've got nothing to lose. Now you've made your Hamish, you have the best sandwich spread on Earth.

00:06:55.139 --> 00:07:02.189
Yeah, I was just thinking that so many ways. Most people I think would reach for a chip but there are multiple ways you could use it. Oh yeah, you

00:07:02.189 --> 00:07:14.430
don't have to eat chips to have hummus. You can dip in your veggies we love to make actually sometimes just for lunch, I'll just put a little dollop of hummus in the middle of a plate or in a little tiny bowl in the middle of our plate.

00:07:14.519 --> 00:07:21.180
And around it. We just chop up all different kinds of vegetables to dip in the hummus.

00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:33.149
It's amazing. I've even been known to toast up some Ezekiel bread and rye bread and garlic on it cut that into strips for the kids. And they have these toasters that they can dip into the hummus along with all their vegetables on their plate.

00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:33.149
That's a nice little addition.

00:07:33.329 --> 00:07:52.800
Just for something special. That hummus you can spread it on a rat spread that could be a flour tortilla. If you're doing a whole wheat flour tortilla you can put it on pita bread whole wheat pita bread you can put it on and just regular sandwich rib we enjoy is the heel you can do.

00:07:54.120 --> 00:07:56.790
Think of it pretty much anywhere. You might use a Mayo

00:07:56.819 --> 00:08:32.100
Yeah, even a collard wrap. It'd be great on the collar. If you just take a big collard leaf and put your hummus on there, put all your chocolate veggies that you like and roll that up. It makes a wonderful collard burrito. hummus is amazing. It's a wonderful way to get your fiber and extra phytonutrients from the beans, that fiber is going to feed your gut bacteria and make you healthy and strong and build your immune system. That's what your gut bacteria eat. They eat fiber and there's absolutely zero fiber in animal foods. But that's it. That includes dairy that includes meat and egg.

00:08:32.370 --> 00:09:10.379
Right. So where are you getting your fiber? your gut bacteria, the good ones that eat the fiber, which is the prebiotic that feeds them? It's their food? How are they making you healthy? How can they work for you to produce the things your body needs to make you strong and healthy. They can't if they're starve to death and their colonies dwindle. So if you want to start feeling better, and you want to build your immune system to resist diseases and to fight those things, what's one of the most important things you can do get plant foods because 98% of people don't have the fiber that they need on a daily basis. And it's no wonder that so many of us are struggling with our health right

00:09:10.470 --> 00:09:12.090
and have no idea why

00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:16.860
no, it's not something you're just learning about by going to the office when I tell you you need to get healthy.
