00:00:00.479 --> 00:00:03.959
We just got back from one of our favorite places on earth.

00:00:03.959 --> 00:00:52.049
So today while we were driving back home, I thought he know when we first started healthy plant based living, we were wondering what in the world are we going to eat when we go on vacation. And that's what we're talking about today. You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture, where your host, Jarrod and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love. If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte. And let's get started.

00:00:54.719 --> 00:01:02.070
All right, Anita, when we go on vacation, what do you think is the biggest challenge that we have faced in the past,

00:01:02.250 --> 00:01:12.329
probably knowing what to eat in the car because we like to have good snacks. And that's what we wanted to talk about today. Because now we have some good snacks we eat in the car.

00:01:12.329 --> 00:01:26.760
But we always wondered, you know, you think about all these different things with whole food plant based and things are changing in your house and in your purse and in your desk drawer. But what do you do when you're going on vacation with the kids? What do you eat in the car?

00:01:26.819 --> 00:01:37.019
What and that's that's the big question the kids because invariably, you could have a huge meal. You hit the road and 30 minutes later, yeah, I'm hungry.

00:01:37.319 --> 00:01:41.039
And that's the story in our house Anyway, I'm guessing yours is like ours as well.

00:01:41.069 --> 00:01:55.978
And one of the challenges with the whole food plant based way of eating is that you're not also just eliminating animal products, but you're eliminating the processed foods, the things that have a lot of additives, fillers, oils, things of that nature.

00:01:56.189 --> 00:02:04.500
Yeah, we get the Cheetos cheese it right trip. We've done that several times. But we always get there and we just don't feel good. And it was a mess all over the car.

00:02:04.709 --> 00:02:08.218
Or the cheese powder. No, just

00:02:08.250 --> 00:02:08.759
No.

00:02:09.419 --> 00:02:10.409
We don't miss it

00:02:10.439 --> 00:02:19.979
at all. It's like a crime scene. You see the yellow and the orange all over the vehicle like oh my goodness, I didn't realize how much you people touched the windows, and the floors and everything.

00:02:20.129 --> 00:02:29.430
And I remember when we used to have a little I mean really little ones. One of the life saving discoveries that we had was the little snack cups.

00:02:25.889 --> 00:02:30.599
And they have almost like a silicone silicone

00:02:30.599 --> 00:02:31.110
lid.

00:02:31.139 --> 00:02:53.580
Yeah, and it's almost like sun where you've got a little hole in the middle and you've got the little rays that go out where it flaps open and close. If you guys have a child or one on the way and you haven't discovered that thing yet, by all means get one because when they get a little older and you start going on the road, it will save you from having cups of Cheerios and stuff spilled all over your car

00:02:53.610 --> 00:02:59.819
because it won't be too they get into their mouth before the entire cup is all over the seat and the floor

00:02:59.849 --> 00:03:02.969
gone. So we'd love that little snack cap. I still

00:03:02.969 --> 00:03:17.280
remember exactly what it looked like to head that silicone lid. And it had handles on both sides. It was kind of a light green. I think I had a little sun on if I'm not mistaken. We had I think I ended up buying we ended up with a few but that's one I remember just kind of visually seeing my mind right now.

00:03:17.310 --> 00:04:04.139
Yeah, those are always in the diaper bag always in the purse, no matter where we went even not on just road trips. I mean if we went to the pool, if we went to grandma's house, we had the stack cut with us. It was fantastic half snack cup will travel. So one of the things like I said that we like to put in that was Cheerios, which is a great snack for young kids in the car. However, I don't recommend necessarily that brand. Now you think about oats when you think about those you know people say oats but a lot of times if you look at the back side or the way the ingredients label, yeah, you read that it's there's no oats in many of the products that are out there. And a lot of them have a lot of added sugar and oil. So read the back of that label. The one that we really like is greenwise brand. That's probably one of the better ones that

00:04:04.139 --> 00:04:06.360
was made by Publix supermarkets. But like

00:04:06.360 --> 00:04:27.779
we've said in the past, always, always read the label, even if it's something you buy on a regular basis for the past year two, because companies get sold, they change their ingredients and one day you might pick it up and be shocked by how it's changed. So we don't want you to do that and have that shock and think you know, how long have I been eating it like this? just glance at it.

00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:27.779
Pretty good?

00:04:28.829 --> 00:04:30.240
Yes or twice a year.

00:04:30.269 --> 00:04:31.199
I mean, good idea.

00:04:31.228 --> 00:04:34.379
It's not anything to obsess over, but just something good to be able

00:04:34.379 --> 00:04:40.139
to be aware of. So Cheerios great for a great little bar for the little ones,

00:04:40.170 --> 00:04:47.579
although ours even as teenagers and preteens will when we have them in the house.

00:04:45.089 --> 00:04:52.649
They'll make a little snack bag full of them. Maybe even make some kind of trail mix with nuts and maybe some raisins.

00:04:52.680 --> 00:05:13.560
That's their favorite go to I mean, they love to pit sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, we even have a pumpkin seed that we like that we get at Costco And they're sprouting, drop and roasted a little bit, I think I don't think those are raw wheat raw ones also but they really like that is plain but then in the trail mix, we'll do oats.

00:05:09.269 --> 00:05:13.560
And it's kind of

00:05:13.709 --> 00:05:20.428
whatever No, it depends so sometimes walnuts sometimes pecans, pistachios on almonds,

00:05:20.459 --> 00:05:32.428
cashews, whatever nuts we have, and then they'll mix the seeds in with it like the sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and raisins or maybe dried cranberries of goji berries, goji

00:05:32.430 --> 00:05:36.120
berries, that's a good one too, but I was thinking cacao nibs. Oh,

00:05:36.689 --> 00:05:39.480
those are amazing.

00:05:36.689 --> 00:05:43.019
Listen, if you have not tried it, look up organic kick cow nibs Ca

00:05:43.259 --> 00:05:44.220
Ca

00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:51.720
they are wonderful. Now they're not sweet. It's like an N sweet chocolate chip almost except a little more crunchy.

00:05:52.170 --> 00:05:59.970
And they make the chocolate tastes if you have that with raisins and some type of nuts.

00:05:55.439 --> 00:06:02.100
It's like chocolate covered nuts like a chocolate covered check.

00:05:59.970 --> 00:06:02.100
Yes you are

00:06:02.759 --> 00:06:15.899
counted are actually made from the cacao pods which is the original form of cacao powder or cocoa powder, which is the processed form. But that's what chocolate is made from so they have them in small pieces.

00:06:13.230 --> 00:06:21.480
And then if you have that with the sweetness of of a ration or some type of berry in there, yeah, without chocolate burst.

00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:23.879
It's fantastic. amazingly

00:06:23.910 --> 00:06:25.350
good for you. Oh yeah, they're

00:06:25.350 --> 00:06:26.279
really really good. A

00:06:26.279 --> 00:06:30.600
lot of high in antioxidants and polyphenols and a lot of those phytonutrients Mm hmm.

00:06:30.870 --> 00:06:43.529
Great things, they fight inflammation and fight a lot of diseases. So try out some cacao nibs if you do try a brand that you don't like I would recommend trying another one. We tried one brand that we didn't like at one time it was really really hard.

00:06:43.529 --> 00:06:57.660
And then another one that was a little bit softer. They're all crunchy though. So definitely, definitely give us a try. We like those on banana and ice cream. And we may have to do episode on those at some point.

00:06:53.250 --> 00:07:04.889
Yeah. So for the bar, get a little Baqi or something that maybe a reusable like they make the silicone sandwich bags. Now.

00:07:01.319 --> 00:07:31.379
Those are really nice, they're reusable, and you can use those and then the kids can just seal up the bag, if they have some left and then could snack on it along the way. That's for the older kids. That's kind of a nice option as well. So they'll even do without not just the trail mix but also make their own granola. And basically what they like in theirs is a little maple syrup stirred on Sam it's like old fashioned oats and they just bake it in the oven till it's a little crispy. That's it.

00:07:28.350 --> 00:07:36.480
They love that for that and they call it granola but really it's a little maple syrup on it still is crispy. And that's it you

00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:41.850
can make it however you like it sometimes will add cinnamon will add the pumpkin spice.

00:07:41.970 --> 00:08:04.350
I'll love to spice mine up with things like that I have a recipe in our cookbook that's coming out soon keep an eye out for that. It's got a lot of different things we add but you can change it up and just put what you like in it. It's fantastic way to get those are well not really herbs as much as spices, like the clothes, all spice things like that nutmeg, you can put all kinds of things in there make but

00:08:04.350 --> 00:08:07.709
if you want to put some herbs, go for it. Try

00:08:07.740 --> 00:08:10.259
delicious, savory herbs.

00:08:10.980 --> 00:08:12.269
savory, granola,

00:08:12.300 --> 00:08:16.050
I'm not real sure. I have to try that out. We could come up with something.

00:08:16.259 --> 00:08:17.100
Maybe

00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:19.079
you're full of good ideas. I see that.

00:08:19.620 --> 00:08:22.800
I'm not going with the flow. I'm hitting you know, what's your inspiration?

00:08:23.550 --> 00:08:26.189
kitchen. That's it.

00:08:23.550 --> 00:08:26.189
You're in trouble now.

00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:45.360
But another go to for us though, really is the simple fruit will grab apples, bananas, although I would say if your bananas are getting on the right side, you may want to avoid those in the vehicle. Something about being in the vehicle especially if it's a longer trip and it gets a little warm. they ripen much faster. It

00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:52.139
seems like they do it really does. But that I mean you think about fruit whole fruit.

00:08:48.120 --> 00:09:23.580
It really and truly is the ultimate fast food. It's already packaged. It's not very messy, really easy to travel with. And you just grab it and go. That's a great thing just for a weekday, but we love doing that on trips. Blueberries for older kids, berries, things like that are fresh strawberries, if they're washed and you can trust the child is again an older child, that's not going to smash the berries in your car. That would be really bad. But we like to take berries like that and the reusable silicone or baggies, things like that. We'll take those. For other things. We really like a hummus.

00:09:23.610 --> 00:09:32.009
Well, one thing for the apples that I like is to refrigerate them so they stay cooler. I just love them refrigerated that way because I just love the flavor of them.

00:09:32.009 --> 00:09:39.120
But if you do that in the car again, if the car's warm, it helps to keep them from not fermenting.

00:09:39.299 --> 00:09:41.399
I say you're saying refrigerate them for

00:09:41.399 --> 00:09:43.559
drink at home before you go on a trip.

00:09:43.589 --> 00:09:49.349
Yeah, we store them in the refrigerator because for some reason everybody likes them cold in our house and they seem to last quite a bit longer.

00:09:49.409 --> 00:09:51.720
Of course they seem to just have a juice here.

00:09:51.779 --> 00:09:53.129
crispness to them

00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:59.250
almost think that tastes sweeter when they're called to a lot of food stays. Yeah, so we really love apples that way.

00:09:59.250 --> 00:10:39.840
They're crispy. And then there's the apple slicer, that's great, but I don't think I'd slice it for the road trip because they brown and Bill Brown oxidize. So I think just taking those holes is really nice. You could even take a little container that's closed, some type of thicker nut butter that wouldn't get everywhere. I mean, that's a nice dip. We'd love again, hummus would make or buy some Hemis, just make sure to read that ingredients label because a lot of hummus has extra oils and things like that in it. And but we would take that and then just break bread. Yeah, yeah, I mean, if you have cauliflower and broccoli, you don't have to prepare all this stuff, put them to work. We have some knives that we have our little one news that worked amazingly well.

00:10:37.230 --> 00:10:54.600
We'll put a link to those in the description. And she will cut up her own veggies, they can peel carrots before you go if you like to peel those. It's not necessary. If you scrub your carrots well if you like the peeling on that's fine as well.

00:10:49.980 --> 00:11:14.879
But carrots, celery, what are other things we dip, those are the main care numbers, cucumbers, tomatoes, you can take the little tiny tomatoes if they eat those and one by those really good tomatoes. Mary's gone crackers are also good. We like to dip those and hummus and there are a lot of different varieties of those again, that's Mary's gone crackers.

00:11:15.749 --> 00:11:24.328
No added oils no added they're just nuts easy. Well seeds that crackers press together and baked and

00:11:25.048 --> 00:11:31.109
they were great and place of chips. If you're trying to cut out the oil and eat vegan, they're a great option. If

00:11:31.110 --> 00:11:36.389
you just need something crunchy that you've got to sink your teeth into. Those are a fantastic option. They're

00:11:36.389 --> 00:11:39.000
really good. We found them in most grocery stores.

00:11:39.269 --> 00:12:04.500
Most people carry those now. So that is a good option. You can also order those online. That's another way to get those into your house and into your pantry and into your car. We love those on the road. Now other things that we like are drinks. We really love having a smoothie on the road because where are you going to get something that's packed full of greens and veggies, you can easily make a smoothie at home before you go.

00:12:04.710 --> 00:12:07.620
We pour it in our favorite 20 how many ounces are

00:12:07.619 --> 00:12:09.479
20 ounce klean kanteen.

00:12:09.568 --> 00:12:17.068
We love that. So our clean contains full we hit the road and we've got our smoothie that we can sip on for an hour or two and it stays cold.

00:12:17.099 --> 00:12:22.288
They are double walled and vacuum insulated so they will stay cold seriously for hours.

00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:24.179
We love those things.

00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:24.179
Everywhere

00:12:24.208 --> 00:12:27.089
we make other drinks that have ice blended in them.

00:12:27.359 --> 00:12:33.989
And several hours later, you can left in a hot van that that ice is still there. It still has that slushy consistency.

00:12:34.558 --> 00:12:35.639
fantastic job

00:12:35.668 --> 00:12:38.849
out at the beach on a hot summer day. And the Florida sun.

00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:54.389
Yeah, those things stay ice cold, they're fantastic. But for the car on a trip, they're wonderful. We love those. And we'll use a silicon straw with those if we're driving especially so we don't have to keep tipping it back to drink out of it. That's another great tip for when you're on the road.

00:12:56.668 --> 00:12:58.619
spilling spilling it on yourself

00:12:58.649 --> 00:13:46.019
having a green smoothie and you just get there and you feel great. I mean, you've had your raw veggies you've had fruits, just makes you feel really good. Yeah, and so that's something we always have to kind of sip on on the road. The other thing we'll do a lot of times is I love my chocolate drink. So that's going to be some organic raw cacao powder mixed in my high speed blender. And I mix that with some chia seeds to give it thickness. I don't put any nuts in this because I don't do a ton of nuts, we use them in other things, we use some kind of like condiments on the side, or I'll use them in some sauces, but I try not to use them if I have other options just because they are a higher fat food. It's not that they're not good for you. They're great for you. But we just try to not over indulge on them because we do love them but they're a higher fat food.

00:13:46.019 --> 00:14:09.059
They're nine calories per gram versus a carb which is four calories per gram. So obviously, it's going to be something that especially if you're looking at weight loss, it's a great thing to cut back a little bit on not overindulge on so and a lot of vegans go towards that when they're cutting out the other things they start eating a ton of nuts and everything. And that's just not something you really want to do, which

00:14:09.090 --> 00:14:22.470
they do have healthy fats and then they do have a lot of minerals. They're great for you and a lot of other just various benefits but if you overdo it plus, with having the chia you get a variety of different foods each day.

00:14:22.529 --> 00:14:33.809
So that drink is going to be cow powder. It's going to be chia seeds, dates that you take the pit setups and so they don't leave big chunks in your drink.

00:14:30.809 --> 00:14:33.809
So then you know chunks

00:14:33.808 --> 00:14:34.979
do not blend out.

00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:42.149
Nope, we know from experience. That's a straining involved you have to strain that through a colander strainer

00:14:42.210 --> 00:14:45.360
or, or just abandon altogether and start all over.

00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:47.730
spin up. We know that from experience.

00:14:47.759 --> 00:16:02.549
Yeah. And then the other thing you can do is add if you want to add a little bit of vanilla if you like that just pure vanilla. Some people use the one that doesn't have alcohol in it. It just depends on what you like whether you can also pick up vanilla powder which is more natural, it's just dried vanilla bean. So that works great. And then I'm trying to think if you like a little pinch of salt if you want to taste more like it has regular milk in it a little pinch of pink salt. And that's it. I like to blend ice in with mine and a little bit of water because I like it colder. That's a drink, you can also heat up and it's almost kind of like a hot chocolate, but really, it's thick because you've got a little bit of chia seed. And if you have a powerful high speed blender, it's almost like drinking melted ice cream is absolutely fantastic. So that is a great car drink. I like that for the car, just for something extra special for a treat. We enjoy that a lot. And of course when it comes to food, there's nut butter sandwiches, we like those a lot of times they'll put a little bit of maple syrup or just bananas in with their nut butter on their bread. Like we usually use zekiel bread we like that a lot. And they have different kinds. Now I had tried it before and didn't like it at all. I thought it tasted like sawdust and it was really heavy.

00:15:58.710 --> 00:16:04.529
But we like this sesame seed one I think it's in our red package.

00:16:04.590 --> 00:16:06.090
The red one I believe is sprouted.

00:16:06.269 --> 00:16:09.269
Okay, the sprouted.

00:16:06.269 --> 00:16:31.200
They're both good. We like both of those, especially like those toasted. If you're a home that's a great option as well. But for the red, those are great. Or you can take just the bread and spread hummus on it and put some of your favorite veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes and things like that. And maybe put lettuce on the top just so it doesn't get soggy your bread doesn't get soggy.

00:16:31.230 --> 00:16:36.539
So a lot of times we'll make it like an open face, but then use the lettuce for that top slice of bread.

00:16:36.870 --> 00:17:16.799
And you can do that and that's great for the car as well. Maybe a little bit better for that one if you're stopping at a rest area to eat or somewhere with a messy Yeah, it can be a little messy, but that's a great sandwich. That's a go to for us as well.
