You've done it again, we've booked a vacation. We pile into the car we get there, we unload all our stuff, we get into our hotel room, and we end up more stressed out by the end of the vacation than when it first began. How can you go on vacation with your family, and ended up in the end feeling better and more healthy and refreshed than when you left home. That's what we're going to show you how to do today. You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture.

00:00:33.149 --> 00:01:01.469
We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love. If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started.

00:01:03.090 --> 00:01:07.739
Welcome to smarter, healthy living. If this is your first time joining us, I am Jared.

00:01:07.920 --> 00:02:06.659
And I'm Anita and we're co founders of smarter Healthy Living where we teach purpose driven women like Q, how to adopt a simple and delicious and enjoyable, whole food plant based lifestyle. We also talk about other lifestyle changes that are very important in order to achieve total vibrant health, so that you can have enough energy and feel great enough every day to get done the things that you want to do instead of just dragging yourself out of bed every day, feeling exhausted and living for the time and you can fall back into bed. That was my story years ago, if you've never heard it, go back and listen to episode one. It's painful, but very true. And I'm so thrilled to be on the other side of it all. So today we're talking about how to decrease your stress when you travel and how to have a much more enjoyable experience when you travel. Goodness knows which children aged eight to 16. At this time, you know, obviously they were all younger years ago.

00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:15.750
But we've been traveling we love to travel and we've been traveling for years with our kids. And we have some experiences to share with you.

00:02:11.699 --> 00:02:42.150
And you know, years ago when we go on these trips and vacations we would book a hotel and try to choose the best hotel. I'm a researcher, I love to research travel. Actually, I was a travel agent years ago, a friend of mine owns a travel agency and I got certified and work through her and help people plan these great vacations. So when I planned hours, I was always trying to find a really great place to stay. But usually we'd end up staying in this one bedroom hotel, it was a great hotel, nice,

00:02:42.689 --> 00:02:50.340
bigger rooms where you'd have two beds and a pullout. But when you have two adults and four children and six people get a little crowded.

00:02:50.370 --> 00:03:09.060
Yeah, even for people in one room that can be a little crazy, just smush together because we were talking about it earlier today. And when we used to go on vacation, and we do this, it would be like at night you'd be exhausted. But you have to wait till somebody else got their shower. And then somebody else came to use the bathroom.

00:03:06.750 --> 00:03:23.789
And then somebody else had to brush their teeth. And it could take an hour or more seriously just to get the bathroom. It was insane. And I was thinking about that and thinking about how I used to go through that rat race every time and we come home exhausted.

00:03:24.750 --> 00:03:33.870
I'm over here smiling because I'm just thinking about, it always would happen. You're in there showering and you hear not not not daddy gotta go potty. And

00:03:34.860 --> 00:04:17.699
that is so true. Never, never failed. So, you know, you spend this whole week in this one room together. And there's and that's I mean, you can live in one room together. But there are other options we want you to think about because we want to work with you to develop the most wonderful memories, the most incredible futures. And really to put yourself in the least stressful situation was because we know stress does not lead to help. And if you're going on vacation, or you're going to a conference and you're tagging along with a spouse who's maybe going for a business conference or whatever, you want to set yourself up for this to be memorable in a good way. Not memorable in a stressed out I needed to go the bathroom and had to wait an hour away. Not

00:04:17.699 --> 00:04:21.899
I survived the family vacation of 1992.

00:04:23.579 --> 00:05:20.009
Yeah, we could have made some shirts for some of those vacations, I'm sure. But then, you know, I started thinking one day, why are we doing this? This is crazy and looking at other options. And it just for some reason had never crossed my mind to think of looking into you even though we're going just to a city or to a conference or whatever. You don't have to stay where the conference is. You don't have to stay in these places. And you think it'd be cheaper because they work out these deals for conferences or you think if you go to a vacation planner, an expert they would put you at the best hotel option. But there are many other ways to travel as a family. Even as a couple that doesn't involve a hotel. There are townhouses or condos right there, you've already opened up this huge possibility of being able to set yourself up for help on your trip. And that's important.

00:05:16.709 --> 00:05:36.180
Because if you're not able to eat good food, I'm not talking just good tasting food, you're not going to feel good for your vacation, you're going to come back feeling awful, and you're not going to get to enjoy it to the fullest, because you're not going to have energy. I don't really feel like going today.

00:05:33.509 --> 00:06:43.949
Oh, my stomach's messed up. And I don't know why I just don't feel good. And all that leads to stress, and you can enjoy your vacation. But if you're in a condo or townhouse, you've got at least a little kitchenette, or someplace that you can cook some things. And then what if you did a house Did you know that a lot of times, you can actually rent a house for the price that you did your hotel, or maybe price isn't an issue for you. And you just want to make the best vacation and you're just thinking I'll stay in the hotel that's easiest, when really, nine times out of 10. Now we choose a house anytime we can because it just makes for such a wonderful experience. Many houses have game rooms for the family that have places you can do family movie nights with Little Theater rooms, they'll have things like basketball courts in the neighborhood, or pools, maybe even a pull up the house your children can enjoy if the spouse is going on a conference, there's just all kinds of options, you open yourself up to the main one being a kitchen, and more space, more bathrooms, more bedrooms, and the stress just starts to disappear. And now you can eat the foods you love that make you feel great.

00:06:40.529 --> 00:06:49.079
And all of a sudden you think Wow, this is amazing. I just never thought of this before. I never thought to check on that.

00:06:46.470 --> 00:06:54.120
And you come back and you're refreshed after your vacation, you don't need a vacation from your vacation.

00:06:54.509 --> 00:07:22.829
Everything you needed just said, we know from experience, because we've done all these things. For many years now, once a year, we'll go to a conference down in Orlando, Florida. And so instead of just going by myself, I like taking the family with me so that it becomes a family vacation. Well, in a lot of these places where they have the conferences, you can get a hotel room for the same price, or the hotel room would be more than that just renting a house like she was saying

00:07:22.889 --> 00:07:24.269
in a really nice neighborhood

00:07:24.298 --> 00:07:26.908
in a nice neighborhood.

00:07:24.298 --> 00:07:41.309
But the funny thing is, is in most of these instances, the place that we would typically rent a house was only about 15 or 20 minutes away. So while it wasn't just a quick walk downstairs from your hotel room, it really wasn't a long drive.

00:07:36.988 --> 00:07:56.908
And then once I got done for the day, sometimes I'd be done around noon, sometimes mid afternoon, I got to leave that place and then go spend a nice evening with my family and usually pick a house that maybe had a pool for the kids to play in. And it was the same price or less than the hotel,

00:07:57.149 --> 00:08:05.519
I swam, we'd have our own private hot tub and all kinds of other things too, that we could enjoy and do together. Plus, we'd have a nice hot meals. And I mean,

00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:14.970
we would have the kitchen space, just like you were saying earlier where we could fit more than just one so you could shower and piece.

00:08:15.629 --> 00:08:46.169
The kitchen space absolutely is huge. Because you can take things with you like beans and rice and different things like that. We'll do an episode about that. What do we cook when we go on vacation. And those are things we also share inside the membership even more in depth, because we just don't have time to do all of that on a podcast episode. But we are going to share some things with you guys that are really practical and helpful to because we want you to be able to start getting some real results now.

00:08:41.639 --> 00:08:46.169
And there are things that we do.

00:08:46.379 --> 00:09:32.009
Yeah, there's some things that you can do that are just super simple. The main thing is when you listen to start doing the things you hear, because really when you start getting results, that's when you start taking action, and some of these things can sound so easy to do. And you think yeah, that's really not gonna make that big of a difference. But what you'll find is, and what we found in our entire lives is the moment that we started doing, what we heard and what we learned. Oh, that was so great. That was such a great podcast. Okay, but how am I going to apply that to my life and once we started doing that, everything started to change for us and whatever area it was, if it was business, relationships, our health, whatever it was, you start doing those things one at a time. Even if you do one thing a week, that's 52 changes in a year. That's a huge difference.

00:09:32.129 --> 00:09:32.820
Huge.

00:09:32.850 --> 00:09:45.840
What we have seen too, and you just a moment ago said it seems so simple. Many times it is it really is just that simple. But it means nothing if you don't do it and apply it.

00:09:46.259 --> 00:10:30.539
And so we're staying in a neighborhood we're going on family walks at night, many times it's on a golf course or something that's really pretty so we can go walk around in nature and get outside and we can go and have free time and enjoy that. area together. It's just it gives us so many more options. But again with the foods, you know, bring some simple things to do think about what you want to cook and bring simple things to things, we always travel with our Instant Pot, and our vitamins. So whatever your high speed blender is, and your instapot if you take those, you are going to be good to go again, we'll cover the feeds later for that. But listen, set yourself up for success, you cannot do that in a hotel room, you can't it's just it's next to impossible.

00:10:30.570 --> 00:10:51.419
What I've seen is at best, you get a little I don't even know if it would be accurate to call it a kitchenette, because you might have two or three feet wide of cabinet space, in addition to the bathroom counter, which that is not a very practical solution just because you're using your your bathroom counter space for bathroom things,

00:10:51.779 --> 00:10:52.860
bathroom things,

00:10:52.950 --> 00:10:55.230
that is a nightmare. I just made that bathroom.

00:10:55.529 --> 00:11:08.610
I like that. But it's so true. I mean, you've got all this extra space, but everybody's happy. And one of the most fun things, too, is just getting there. And the kids don't know a lot of times we don't tell them where we're staying. And so they don't know, is it a condo? Is it a house?

00:11:08.610 --> 00:11:25.289
What does it have? And we surprise them and choose something and we get there and nobody can hardly wait just to open the door. And you're sitting there trying to punch in the buttons to get inside. And we go in and explore. And it's always such a fun experience as a family just to go through the house or the condo and see what all you

00:11:25.289 --> 00:11:28.440
want to run ahead of us.

00:11:25.289 --> 00:11:32.309
It's like herding cats because they want to run into the different rooms and we say no, no, we're gonna walk through and explore it together.

00:11:32.340 --> 00:13:29.940
Yeah, and it's just so much fun. And we're all healthier, because we're eating the good stuff. And we're all low stress, because we have our own little spaces. But we have our shared common areas, a lot of times they have really fun games to play. Sometimes we take our own as well. That's another fun thing you can do as a family. You know, we've had some of the most fun family game nights and just really neat things that we do together like that and going on walks and things. But all of this leads to your help because you're going on vacation and you're getting away to try to make memories you don't want to come back exhausted and frustrated. And it just doesn't lead to better relationships. So this is one of our biggest takeaways from from our own family vacations is for you just to find a way to get away and come back feeling refreshed. You're healthier because you're eating the good foods. You feel great because you didn't have to fess diverse spaces. You slept well, because you didn't have to listen to six people breathe in the same space all night long. You know, it's just a wonderful experience when you can get away and come home feeling great. And that's what we want for you is to build a life that you absolutely enjoy, where you can treasure the memories but also feel great enough to go and do the things that you went there to do in the first place.
