Imagine you live in a little farmhouse on a large piece of property built probably 100 years ago. And the nearest source of water is a well that you have on your property. Now, you've lived in this house for many, many years. And over the years, when you turn on the faucet in the kitchen sink, the flow gets slower and slower. Now the water that you have coming out of the ground is a hard water, meaning it has a lot of minerals in it like calcium, magnesium, iron, things of that nature. And over time, those minerals will build up and cause a narrowing within the pipes.
00:00:36.030 --> 00:00:51.090
Now, would you expect that to just happen in the kitchen, but not in the bathroom, or the laundry room or even the faucet outside? Not at all, you would expect that this would happen throughout the entire house.
00:00:51.929 --> 00:01:01.560
Same thing is going on inside your blood vessels. And when it comes to supplying your body with nutrients, blood flow is everything. We'll talk about this and more. So stay with us.
00:01:02.340 --> 00:01:16.980
You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using
00:01:18.060 --> 00:01:39.030
a statement to say it's time to close everything. To creative, we know that if people have heart disease, or clotting, yes, obviously that causes a problem. Not getting blood flow, virtual jam grabbed very long.
00:01:32.700 --> 00:01:48.450
Yeah. But for just other general health that goes on in the body and other chronic diseases that go on, I don't think many people will associate the two. And that's why we wanted to talk about this with you today.
00:01:48.480 --> 00:02:49.469
No, because I think with blood flow, the other things that you think about our blood pressure, maybe if you know that blood pressure and blood flow are related, which they are, and then also cholesterol, your cholesterol being higher elevated, you think about your blood will add affects blood flow, and it does. But all those things kind of go back to the heart, you start thinking about the heart and blood flow, or maybe your vessels and the blood flow, but you think about vessels and you think about the heart. But why do we not think about anything else with blood flow? I mean, blood goes somewhere in your body, it goes everywhere. So then that leads you to question, what else is poor blood flow affecting? And how can we change that, and I think about with my own life, I mean, in my story, if you haven't heard my story before, one of the things that I suffered from for a long time was, I would lay on my side in bed, and I get comfortable on my left side, and all of a sudden, I would hear and it would get louder and louder.
00:02:49.469 --> 00:02:50.520
And what was that sound,
00:02:50.550 --> 00:03:10.680
it was coming from my neck, it was coming out, but I could hear it in my ear. It was my carotid artery. That's not normal. But apparently a lot of people have that. And they don't know it's not normal. But that's not normal. So there's a clogging of that artery that's began in the Bloods having a hard time getting through there.
00:03:08.069 --> 00:03:23.009
And so now it makes so boring noise when it goes through your neck. And it was scary. And I mean, honestly, it got to the point where parts of the side of my face would start going now even a piece of my lips would start going numb, I would have to roll to the other side.
00:03:23.250 --> 00:03:32.370
Because it freaked me out. And it was carotid. They call it carotid stenosis or clogging of that carotid artery.
00:03:32.699 --> 00:03:42.808
Yes. And your mother even had that and even had to have surgery to have that correct where they went in and surgically removed the blockage.
00:03:42.870 --> 00:04:02.340
Exactly. And what you don't think about is, what is that affecting? Because again, we're looking at the clogging of the arteries. Well, it's affecting wherever that bloods headed, and what really what's behind it as well. But where's that blood going? That that big artery in your neck? Where does that lead to your brain
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:06.330
to your head, your face?
00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:06.330
everything above your neck?
00:04:06.538 --> 00:04:12.778
Right? And so then that's going to cause problems and issues with the brain if it doesn't get fixed,
00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:18.689
and was likely just that one artery even though that was where you were having symptoms.
00:04:15.959 --> 00:04:20.728
Do you think it was just that one artery that was clogged? No, absolutely
00:04:20.730 --> 00:04:40.230
not. Because you know, I was having other symptoms. I was tired all the time I was hurting. My joints were aching, probably because they weren't getting the blood flow they needed right. Then I didn't know there was anything I could do about it apart from surgery or going to the doctor to confirm what it was and then getting on medications, maybe blood thinners or things like that.
00:04:37.199 --> 00:04:43.560
But we're not told how much effect food has on that.
00:04:40.230 --> 00:05:00.540
Sometimes people mention exercise if you exercise, you know, that can help. Obviously, it helps them with a lot of things, but what's causing the blood to get thick and to narrow the arteries? What's causing that and what we know and what science shows is it's the Food,
00:05:00.689 --> 00:05:13.560
it's the food that we eat, and then the food we don't eat. That's also very true. So there are certain foods that we eat that will cause damage to the lining of our blood vessels.
00:05:14.069 --> 00:05:21.810
And then when we eat foods that are high in fats that the saturated fats like with animal foods, and foods that are high in cholesterol, and
00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:25.259
oils, let's go with that.
00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:26.129
Well, things like that, that we've heard our heart How
00:05:26.129 --> 00:05:35.189
can I palm oil, which are present in a lot of foods, especially a lot of vegan foods, those are high in saturated fats. And so those will all cause clogging of the arteries.
00:05:35.819 --> 00:05:50.040
But one thing that we really wanted to hammer home with you today was the fact that most people would say, No, it's not a surprise that you tell me that arteries around my heart are getting clogged. Yeah, we know that we hear it all the time.
00:05:50.430 --> 00:05:50.699
But
00:05:50.730 --> 00:06:00.959
well, and then don't you think most people just assume it's because they're getting older? Well, it happens. I mean, we're getting older. It happened to my father and my grandfather, they all had heart attacks, or they all had high blood pressure.
00:06:01.350 --> 00:06:06.540
In my cluster and the illustration with the farmhouse O's and old house, the pipes just got clogged.
00:06:07.589 --> 00:06:09.990
It was getting old wasn't that the pipes were old,
00:06:09.990 --> 00:06:27.060
it was that the water had hard minerals in it, the calcium, the magnesium, the iron, had those not been in there, they would not have built up no matter how old the pipes exactly, hmm, good point. And if our foods if we're not eating the animal products, we aren't getting the saturated fats.
00:06:27.060 --> 00:06:37.589
We're avoiding the pressed out oils, we're avoiding the saturated fats and things like coconut oil and palm oil. And I hate to burst your bubble. But Coconut oil is not a superfood.
00:06:37.678 --> 00:06:55.139
Yeah. And we thought that for a long, long time, and oh, my goodness, it was even out in research. I mean, some of the research back then, but you have to look at who funds that research. And how was that study done. And you start digging into that and you start seeing that it causes damage, those things can cause damage.
00:06:55.439 --> 00:07:16.410
And I'm embarrassed to say this, but for a while there was the whole movement with bulletproof coffee or black coffee, I think was bulletproof coffee. And they said you want to put butter in it and coconut oil and to have the fats that would kind of cream the oil for you instead of adding a lot of sugar in the coffee for you.
00:07:11.430 --> 00:07:30.990
Yes. Okay. And then not add sugar. So you'd have the fats in place of the sugar because it was low carbs, higher fat. So I did that for a little while. And I'm just embarrassed because I I the damage that I may have been doing to myself, but I didn't know.
00:07:31.050 --> 00:07:32.910
And you have to think about the parts of your body.
00:07:32.910 --> 00:07:39.870
You know, why is it that as men aged and hit around their 40s, they start having certain issues that are related to blood flow.
00:07:39.930 --> 00:07:43.170
Right, exactly. And those things happen.
00:07:43.470 --> 00:07:47.310
And there's a billion dollar industry that was created based upon that one thing alone.
00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:52.980
And it has to do with blood flow. And it goes back to what's happening in our heart and what's happening in our carotid arteries.
00:07:53.100 --> 00:08:03.000
And if you are a lady listening to this podcast, those same things will affect women as well. It's not quite as dramatic, but it does happen.
00:07:59.579 --> 00:08:17.819
And with what we're talking about, that's kind of the canary in the mine. The smaller arteries get clogged. And we may not notice that, if it does not cause a very noticeable difference,
00:08:17.850 --> 00:08:49.259
right. And that is just a warning sign. That's all that is is a warning sign. It's your body telling you, I'm not functioning like I'm supposed to. There's something going on underneath it all. And it's blood flow. And this August back to the same issue of the clogging of the arteries. Same thing, it's what's happening in the heart. Same thing is what's happening in the in the brackets, same thing that's happening in the brain. So now you think about all timers, there are some studies that are linking blood flow. Now a lot of studies linking that to to Alzheimer's and dementia dementia in general.
00:08:49.830 --> 00:09:03.720
If you were to look at somebody that has dementia, where they were 10 years ago, the symptoms at that, well, I should say lack of symptoms really 10 years ago, and then look at him today with the difficulty with their memories.
00:09:04.169 --> 00:09:31.919
And just you know all the different symptoms that come with dementia. If you were to remove those 10 years, and make that change in a split second, what would you call that? A stroke, a stroke. So what's happening when these arteries get clogged, and it's just this, grandma's getting older, she's getting forgetful, and oh, it's getting worse. And now she forgot my name. And now I'm scared to death the ride in the car with grandma because she doesn't know what she's doing.
00:09:32.580 --> 00:09:36.120
We just call that getting old.
00:09:32.580 --> 00:09:39.990
Right? But for those things, I like to term it a slow stroke.
00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:47.159
We've just taken what can happen in the course of seconds and extended it 10 years. And now I've just said we're just getting old, right? It just happens.
00:09:47.340 --> 00:10:58.110
And so we've talked about different things that can cause it and a lot of it has to do with food. It has to do with the animal products. We know that those things have the saturated fats. And those are the the biggest contributor dairy, meat All kinds of eggs. And it's not just red meat, it's not just red meat, white meat, chicken can do the same thing fish can do it as well, same thing. So it's just it may be a little bit slower with some, or maybe not depending on your body. But ultimately you're headed toward the same direction when when you're eating those things on a regular basis. So it's not just about what you eat, that we're talking about what you eat. It's not just about what you eat, it's also about what you're not eating. Because plants are filled with a wonderful things your body was created, and then it needs on a daily basis in order to function well, in order to repair the cells that have gone rogue. We've talked about that in past episodes, you can go back and listen. But your body needs the things that are found in plant foods like fiber and things like that, in order to repair in order to prevent the clogging of your arteries.
00:10:58.408 --> 00:11:03.448
And studies do show that the clogging can be reversed.
00:11:03.448 --> 00:11:05.548
Now, it may not happen for everybody.
00:11:05.729 --> 00:11:08.428
And it may not happen overnight, it can take a little while
00:11:08.489 --> 00:11:15.359
now, it certainly wouldn't happen overnight, it would be something that would be over the course of years. But there have been studies that show that it does happen
00:11:15.389 --> 00:11:19.558
literal pictures of people having coronary arteries open up
00:11:19.589 --> 00:11:28.438
the arteria grams, where you see the constricted and then I believe the one that I'm remembering was about a three year difference. And then it showed that it was wide open again.
00:11:28.469 --> 00:11:33.479
And what were the people doing that these studies were shown to open up the coronary arteries,
00:11:33.509 --> 00:11:55.379
they stopped all animal products, they stopped the the pressed out oils, I think they had even stopped eating a ton of nuts, which nuts and seeds are great for you. But eating a ton of them. It does have a lot of fats in it. So in this particular study, they were limiting that so that it would open the arteries up faster.
00:11:56.249 --> 00:12:14.219
So basically, it was just the main thing they were doing is stopping then stopping animal products, being meat and dairy, and eggs and eggs. And then they were adding in because again, it's not just about what you need to stop, it's about what you need to add in all these delicious, beautiful colorful,
00:12:14.698 --> 00:12:18.658
beans, greens, fruits, veggies, grains,
00:12:18.688 --> 00:12:26.879
grains, fruits, veggies, all the beautiful colors and flavors. And with that, again, you're getting the phytonutrients that antioxidants, you're getting
00:12:26.938 --> 00:12:34.229
your chi formation fiber to feed your your gut bacteria, which then can bring a whole host of health benefits,
00:12:34.499 --> 00:12:55.918
it can boost your immune system helps you think better all these different things that happen as a result of getting the wonderful benefits of eating those fruits and vegetables. So we want you to understand that just because something's happening in one part of your body being your heart, or your blood pressure is going up or your cholesterol is going up.
00:12:56.129 --> 00:12:59.489
It's affecting the whole body.
00:12:56.129 --> 00:13:21.629
But there's something that you can do about it. There's a positive takeaway here, because you have more control, than you're often led to realize, you go into the doctor's office and you have one of these things, or two or three going on, and you get on these medications and you're thinking to yourself, if I can just get the right medicine, if I can just get the right diagnosis, then these things will start to reverse.
00:13:19.318 --> 00:13:34.408
Well, if your numbers start getting better, it doesn't necessarily mean that things are reversing A lot of times, it just kind of masks symptoms of what's still going on. And your main symptoms may slice it a little bit, but it's not stopping the process.
00:13:34.589 --> 00:13:44.519
So with the blood pressure, you are controlling those numbers, but you're not controlling the root cause of that, which is the inflammation, the damage going on into the lining of the vessels,
00:13:44.668 --> 00:14:32.489
right. And so what we want you to know is you have control over what you eat, you have control over what goes on your plate. And the wonderful thing is, it can be so easy, it can be completely delicious. If you need some ideas on where to get started.
