Send us a Text Message.

Your brain is the physical seat of all of your memories and thoughts.  It is the essence of who you are as an individual,  so it's a scary thought that its ability to function well could fade as you get older.

This can be seen in the form of dementia, senility, and even strokes, but is there something you can do to help ensure that you and those you love continue to have strong mental health?  Does it all boil down to just genetics or bad luck, OR is there something simple that you can actually do about it?

The great news is that you absolutely do have the amazing ability to control the direction of your health and therefore....your life!

00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:16.170
There's a story from many years ago that when I think about from time to time, it makes me chuckle. And he and I were living in Charleston, South Carolina at the time and her father had come to visit us there, he was coming in as a tourist. And we took him around to some of the different sites.

00:00:16.170 --> 00:00:53.880
And one of the things we had done is we were going to take a cruise out to one of the forts that was on an island, out in the bay there, created by the natural land formation. So there was a small shack or small shed where they had a little window and the door and we went up there, we bought our tickets, and he just kind of leaned into her and kind of cocked his head to the side. He said, Now, if you see this face again in the next hour, so do not sell me another ticket. And so we all got a chuckle out of it, referring to, obviously, memory loss, and he was a little bit older, but at that point, he didn't really have any issues.

00:00:49.710 --> 00:01:32.730
Later on, he actually did develop some memory issues that later then became a dementia. I don't think the time was ever really given a name. But from the time that that started, within about two years, it had rapidly declined, and he then did eventually pass away. So naturally, the next question would be, well, especially for Anita, I'm his daughter, is that something that's going to happen to me? You know, is that going to then be my reality? Is there anything that I can do that could help prevent this? Well, today, we want to share with you something actually very easy that you can do to help this from ever becoming your reality.

00:01:33.420 --> 00:01:57.480
You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they

00:01:57.480 --> 00:01:57.900
love.

00:01:58.409 --> 00:02:08.039
If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started.

00:02:09.598 --> 00:02:40.348
Understandably, the thought of having some type of dementia or cognitive decline is very scary. Because our memories are thoughts that make us who we are. And there's a very real, very good chance that you know, somebody that suffers from something like this, and it may even show itself as just being slightly forgetful. Yeah, Grandma, you know, she forgot where she put the car keys. Or she asked me that question already once before a few minutes ago.

00:02:40.830 --> 00:02:49.500
But what if there was something you could do that was so simple, and it had been right there in the produce section all along, but nobody's talking about it.

00:02:50.310 --> 00:03:01.199
And it's simple, but it's so powerful. I mean, what we want to share with you today is that this thing that she's telling you about, and the fact that it's in the produce aisle kind of gives it away, I got

00:03:01.409 --> 00:03:10.889
this in there, too. It's also delicious. You said it's simple. But you know how I'm about delicious, one of my favorite all time things got a story for you in a little bit about that.

00:03:11.460 --> 00:03:57.990
It absolutely has to be delicious, because if it's not, then several members of our family will not eat it. We shall not name any names. But I'm pointing across the table to the other microphone here, we had video, you would see it, it'd be me totally giving it away over here. Know what we're talking about, though, is that this is simple. But it's extremely powerful that it has been shown in various different studies to lower the risk of dementia. And that's powerful, reduce the effects of Alzheimer's, prevent age related memory loss, what we're talking about now in the stories boosts your brain cells, that's the Center for everything that happens with your memory with your cognitive abilities.

00:03:54.659 --> 00:04:26.279
And what we mean by that is about problem solving, thinking, remembering where things are around you, like some people that are just naturally good at navigating, well, that's part of what we're talking about with the spatial abilities of the brain. It helps to boost concentration and memory, and has even been shown to help boost mental health. All of these things have to do with your brain. So if you can take care of your brain, these things will naturally be a byproduct of that

00:04:26.279 --> 00:05:17.579
when I'm just going to be honest, this is just scratching the surface of what this thing can do. And you don't need to go through and memorize every little thing that every ingredient has. But we want you to be aware of the power that is placed when these things are created that are placed in there to help your body thrive. And they're absolutely delicious things. But again, we're just scratching the surface here we're mostly talking about your brain, but because this food and many other of the whole food plant based foods. If you go back and listen In this episode that talks about the five foundational foods, all these foods are going to do a lot of these things like decrease your inflammation, this food that we're talking about today is absolutely incredible a decrease in inflammation. So of course, it's not just going to affect your brain, it's going to affect, in fact,

00:05:17.910 --> 00:05:27.209
effect and effect. Well, where are you? Where are you going with this? it'll affect a lot. Yeah, a lot of your body's inflammation,

00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:44.370
it's made a huge difference in the pain that I have in my joints, that's no longer there, I say have it should be had, actually, because I don't have that anymore. And I have a lot more energy. And there are reasons for that the inflammation is gone. And I can think more clearly separate when I occasionally say, in fact.

00:05:46.920 --> 00:05:52.500
But anyway, that's just being a homeschooling mom of four in addition to full time entrepreneur, and

00:05:53.129 --> 00:05:53.670
yeah,

00:05:53.879 --> 00:06:00.779
you mentioned a moment ago about the power that's in the food. But there's also power in your hand.

00:06:00.990 --> 00:06:01.649
Yes, I

00:06:02.129 --> 00:06:09.899
like being able to know that these foods exist, know that they can help you, and then get them inside of you.

00:06:09.930 --> 00:06:24.810
Absolutely. I mean, I'm telling you, I got a text from a friend today. And we've been talking about some different things he could do for high blood pressure. And he texted me today. And he said, I've switched to two meals, healthy plant based two a day and his blood pressure is coming down.

00:06:25.110 --> 00:06:28.649
It's amazing. He said, I'm not there yet. But it's coming down.

00:06:28.680 --> 00:06:59.519
That's exciting. That's the power of these foods that we're talking about. And again, like Jared said, it's not just the food, you have the power in your hand. Now, you don't have to wonder which which medicine Am I going to take which this or that, again, chaired and I are not against medication, but it's not the answer to the root core problem that's happening, they'll treat symptoms, but they're not going to reverse that problem that's going on or stop it in its tracks. And that's the power of the food on your plate. That's the power of the spoon in your hand.

00:07:00.569 --> 00:07:22.050
People don't have high blood pressure, because of a medicine deficiency, or any other disease process is not typically from a deficiency of medicine, and we're not against medicine, there is a perfect place for them, perfect time for them. But it's not generally going to address what started the problem in the first place.

00:07:20.189 --> 00:07:22.050
What's

00:07:22.050 --> 00:07:22.829
causing it.

00:07:23.310 --> 00:07:30.300
And that's what got us into the going down the path and discovering whole food plant based lifestyle. Absolutely,

00:07:30.329 --> 00:08:17.639
I was miserable. I mean, I was hurting all labor, my joints were aching. We were in the process of adopting our daughter. And I was absolutely in a place of just pain and no energy every day. I mean, I don't know if you've ever gone through this before, but waking up every day, so exhausted, you can barely survive the day and mine kept progressing so much, I reached a point, I couldn't even go up one flight of stairs to tuck our children into bed at night, and spent my day sitting on the couch, basically, you know, at first it didn't start like that. At first it was just I'm surviving my day, I'm exhausted, but I'm going to push through. And I basically live for bedtime. And I'm just going to be honest, That's no way to live. And if you're living like that, I want you to know that it can change. I am proof of that.

00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:34.349
And there's tons of research behind it. And we have clients that experience this all of the time. So we want you to know that there is power and, and the ability to take out these whole food, plant based items and make them a part of your regular routine in a way that you enjoy.

00:08:34.349 --> 00:08:48.899
And that tastes great. So that you can thrive on a daily basis, you do not have to be at low energy all the time. I mean, I have to force myself to go to bed at night. Cheers going, Anita 11 o'clock, and I know I want to go to

00:08:49.110 --> 00:08:50.490
sleep, we got to get some rest.

00:08:50.970 --> 00:08:59.909
And I've got energy all day long now and I'm not taking energy pills. And I'm not taking protein drinks and protein powders and eating protein bars.

00:08:56.909 --> 00:09:06.149
And I'm not having to drink coffee all day long. It's just natural energy because my cells get what they need. And now we're going to talk

00:09:06.149 --> 00:09:40.289
about function how they were designed to function exam now. But when you were at your lowest, I had a word that came to mind while you were telling your story. I would say that the word hopelessness would describe because you're hurting. But there was this point where you were thinking, is this ever going to end? Is there anything that can help me? And we want you to know that? Yes, there is hope. I mean, there's no guarantee that what we're sharing with you is going to solve everything, but it certainly can't hurt and I believe within me that yes, it will help.

00:09:40.440 --> 00:10:17.759
Yeah, I know it helps because it changed my life. I mean, you know what I was like I was at the point where I told him, I'm gonna have to get the hospital. I mean, this is getting so bad and we had tried going to doctors and figuring out what was going on and weren't getting the answers that we needed. And you know, there comes a point you can be told so much that the is just how it's gonna be or we don't know what it is. And it gets it gets to a point where you just have to start digging. And we dug for years into research, Jared has a beard. Jarrod has a cellular and molecular biology degree. And we just we love research anyway.

00:10:14.549 --> 00:10:25.200
But we wish we didn't have to research this. But we did because we wanted to be well, he was having his own struggles.

00:10:21.120 --> 00:10:34.049
And we knew we had four children actually three and one on the way. And we knew that we wanted to be able to chase them around and play with them and make memories and travel together.

00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:43.409
And we knew that we wanted to build a business and help others in some way. And we had all these ideas and dreams and things that we wanted to do. And we can't do that with no energy at the time

00:10:43.409 --> 00:10:55.889
we were in our early 40s. So we weren't ready just to roll over and die. I mean, there was still a lot of life left in us. And we had our children that were younger at the time, who's going to take care of them if we can't do it.

00:10:55.919 --> 00:11:02.820
Exactly. And we're nearing 50. Now, I mean, we're getting closer and closer to 50.

00:10:58.049 --> 00:11:12.029
And I'm telling you every day I have more energy, I do not have to find myself to survive the day on energy. So let's get back to what that thing is. I think we named it Yes, I

00:11:12.029 --> 00:11:15.659
think we need to do a great reveal. I'll let you do it.

00:11:16.049 --> 00:11:45.720
It's blueberries. We love blueberries. They're so incredible. All the berries are amazing, though. And so we don't want you to just take this one thing and go. Okay, now I've got to remember all this stuff they said that blueberries do because again, we've just scratched the surface of what they actually do here, we're just talking about the brain and brain health, but you would not believe the inflammation that can be fought off and the pain that can start disappearing. I mean, people even started eating this way and had migraines go away.

00:11:46.379 --> 00:12:26.610
And blueberries are only one of many berries that are extremely healthy for you. But what we read here, they were talking specifically in the studies about blueberries and we just want to share that with you. So like we mentioned before lowering dementia risk, well, they found that cognitive function, being able to remember things be able to think being able to calculate all those things, all that falls under cognitive function is better preserved when eating plant foods. But they found that drinking 30 milliliters of a blueberry concentrate which was equivalent to they said 230 grams of berries. I'm not sure how much that is you just have to get a scale and weigh it out.

00:12:24.419 --> 00:12:26.610
But listen,

00:12:26.610 --> 00:12:37.980
just get some berries every day. Let's just break it down to its simplest form. Get some berries every day and vary the column that you have. Vary the colors, vary the types. It's really

00:12:37.980 --> 00:12:47.190
very easy. I put about a cup of blueberries on my oatmeal in the morning and I have that most mornings and then if we have some others like raspberries, I'll throw that on there too. For a little, little variety.

00:12:47.220 --> 00:12:53.909
One of my best friends has become the biggest blueberry convert. We joke about it all the time. Now I'm texting her.

00:12:54.000 --> 00:13:06.330
Have you had your blueberries Girl, you know I have my blueberries. They make fun of me at work. I'm not kidding you. I love them. I put them in my bag, they go in my purse, I get them to work, they go in the fridge.

00:13:03.210 --> 00:14:14.669
Sometimes she keeps them on her desk, those blueberries she just can't get enough and she's like, I feel so good. That tastes great and she eats them all different ways. But I think a lot of times she just grabs fresh blueberries and eat some plain. They're just wonderful the way they are. Now I know that you probably can't tell by listening to my voice that I'm a southern girl through and through. I grew up in a little small blink and you miss it town in northwest Georgia. Now some of you may be able to relate to this. I'm talking out five miles west of a tiny little town called Lafayette I don't know if you know where that is. If you're familiar with Dalton, it's north of Atlanta but it's up in the corner not too far from Chattanooga, I guess it took us about an hour to get there. But literally when I was growing at my town had probably two traffic lights in it. And we were five miles west of that. So you drive and drive and you see beautiful countryside and mountains and green trees and the drive home was beautiful but you got there and you know your closest neighbors a half mile away. And we've just got acres to roam in the woods and stuff out loved growing up that way you know we didn't have iPads, we didn't have all those things.

00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:51.929
We just got out and enjoyed nature and one of the things looked most forward to is picking blueberries every year because we had wild blueberry bushes that grew on the hill beside our house. So I get dressed and I'm put on my shoes as quick as I could and I grabbed a big tall glass cap I don't know why but I always liked that I think because I could see those bright blues through the glass and it was clear glass so I would grab that and take off running down the stairs and I just couldn't wait to get out there mother knows we go and watch out for snakes because you know that snakes I think they can like the blueberries too.

00:14:52.200 --> 00:15:04.049
Well, I've heard that story before too. I've heard about snakes being around blueberry plants but I wonder if it's not maybe that there are other things eating The blueberry feed on Well, you know,

00:15:04.110 --> 00:15:10.019
yeah, probably, I think you're probably right. That makes a lot more sense to me.

00:15:06.750 --> 00:15:46.259
But I wasn't thinking about that at the time, I just wanted to get my blueberry bushes. And right next to that we had blackberry bushes growing in a strip and they were all wild, they tasted amazing. I'll never forget the first of the season, I'd run up there, the blue bass, I mean, they were just bursting with color, they gone from green, I'd watched them go from green to purple over the course of the days. And then there were the purple ones. And they were just so ready and waiting to be picked. And I would honestly, they would get so ripe, you just touched them. And you could just watch them fall off just by the handfuls into your cap. And I was just thrilled about that.

00:15:42.299 --> 00:17:15.059
The only thing I didn't like was afterwards, I'd have to go in and take a bath because chiggers also like to hang around the blueberry bushes. And that was not the fun part. But you know, the hazards of the trade of picking blueberries, absolutely look forward to that every year, it was so much fun. And the only thing that would have made it more fun is if I had more more kids to come over people to come over to pick them with me. You know, I had friends come over from time to time, but just always when I wanted to pick them. I just noticed him ready when I walked by. and I thought you know, I've got to, I can't wait, I've got to go get that cup and start picking those berries. And really, I would we would eat them all different ways. But my favorite way was just to take the handfuls of berries. And of course, we don't have that now where we live. And we're more in more of a suburban type area. But I'll never forget my memories with the blueberries running up the stairs back into the house with that clear glass almost overflowing. They were so good. I washed them, get in there and just start eating them by the Hansel and the flavor. It was amazing just bursting in your mouth. That's probably To be honest, one of the ways that I fell most in love with eating produce, absolutely love eating those blueberries, they are so delicious. But just think about all the wonderful things that are waiting for you in the produce section or at your local farmers market stand. And if you're really blessed, and you find a farm nearby, that you can just go and pick your own.

00:17:15.450 --> 00:17:25.109
That's amazing. Take advantage of it, look, get on the internet and look around and see if there's a pick and eat around us. But when it's summertime, and you may not think

00:17:25.108 --> 00:17:32.848
there will be one and may be very surprised because they're all over the place as long as your area would sustain growth of blueberries.

00:17:32.849 --> 00:18:25.650
Well, that's a great time to teach kids. I mean, here's the homeschooling mom coming out in May. But take your children along with you. And before you go or after have a little topical study on blueberries, blueberry bushes and things like that and learn about them. What eats them, you know, how do the farmers grow them? How do they harvest them, there's so many different things you can learn just around that one topic, and teach them about the health benefits that you've learned here today. Because it's never too early to teach your children to eat in a way that fuels their body. Well, because we all want the best for our children. And this is one of the most wonderful things you can teach them from an early age is how to appreciate the wonderful nutrients that God put into the plants that he created for our bodies to fuel as well. So you were wanting to talk a little bit more about I think one of the some of the findings from the research study. Well, one

00:18:25.650 --> 00:18:58.980
of the things that I found to be very amazing about blueberries, and I think this would apply to a lot of other berries as well is that they actually help the neurons, the nerve cells in your brain form new connections. For the longest time, it was thought that you have just all the number of brain cells and all the number of connections between those cells that you'll ever have. But studies have shown that that's not true that you can actually generate new brain cells. But those brain cells can make informed new connections. That's what helps us learn. That's what helps us form memories.

00:18:59.009 --> 00:19:18.539
Well, the messages pass from nerve cell to nerve cell, when they're in to end like that when they're close to each other. And so as they're growing, and you're creating new nerve cells, the messages can travel better, it just makes sense that you can think better and do a lot of other things better. If you have more growing, it makes sense.

00:19:18.720 --> 00:19:22.380
And the blueberries were actually shown to do that.

00:19:22.619 --> 00:19:47.730
That's amazing. The other thing too, that I thought was pretty amazing is that we think of some of these things is taking a long time to have an effect or have a benefit. But there were actually some studies that showed that memory and concentration were boosted 15 to 20%. Wow, five hours after having a bowl of blueberries. That was just the one serving this wasn't having it day after day for weeks and weeks. No, this was one serving.

00:19:47.759 --> 00:20:32.279
So then when does that happen? What happens? I mean, how does that affect you day after day after day after day of doing that? Well, you get your energy back, you get your life back, and this is just one thing we're talking about. One simple berry here. What if you were eating blueberries and raspberries and blackberries and goji berries and all these amazing different berries that you could eat? What does this mean to you? What it means is get more of the five foundational foods everyday into your life and less and less animal products. The studies show that they cause problems, a lot of them are even cancer causing Now, you may not have known that. But even things like sandwich meat, lunch meat, what other types of made it all the processed meats are now

00:20:32.279 --> 00:20:39.869
found to be they call it a group one carcinogen, that it is known actually to directly contribute to colon cancer.

00:20:39.900 --> 00:20:47.039
And this is one of those things, you know, nobody's telling us this stuff. I was eating the better lunch meat.

00:20:47.069 --> 00:21:01.890
All right, but nobody was telling me, you know, you just need to not eat it at all. I was trying to pick one without the bat preservatives, no nitrates nitrites. It's all natural. It's organic. No, it's still profitable. And it's still a carcinogen, according to

00:21:01.920 --> 00:21:04.380
is that the World Health Organization? Yes. Okay.

00:21:04.859 --> 00:21:11.910
Yep. So just get more of the great stuff and start just backing off on those other things or go all in like we did.

00:21:11.910 --> 00:21:47.579
I mean, if you're in a desperate place, and you're thinking, you know, I just want change, and I want to stop dieting and doing in a miserable way. This is the way to do it, you have found your answer because if it works for so many different problems because it opens up blood flow reduces inflammation. It's absolutely amazing what this can do for you. So again, the take home is eat your berries, but eat a lot of the five foundational foods as well. Get many different berries on your plate, not just one type and not just one color, get those rainbow of colors in there.

00:21:44.220 --> 00:22:08.789
There's so many beautiful things and the colors show the different nutrients that are in there. So get a wide variety, enjoy them on a regular basis and you won't believe the changes that are going to happen for you. Just with this one simple thing. Just try one simple thing. What do you have to lose absolutely nothing and you have everything to gain.
