The number one thing you will never get from animal products today and episode number six.

00:00:07.559 --> 00:00:42.118

We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get me on the road to create a vibrant life they love. 00:00:47.280 --> 00:02:12.060
I want to share a story with you. It was a hot, crazy day on the highway, we were traveling down, hit it on family vacation, everybody was getting restless. And we thought you know, we need to take a moment just to stretch our legs, get a bite to eat. So we had walked into at the time one of our favorite fast food restaurants and looked at the menu and in our minds already started thinking I'm really hungry. I'm going to whatever we pick, I want to Biggie size it because I.. it probably will not fill me up. So we all stand in line. And we make sure we have all the kids with us. And we're all like little ducks in a row and you're smelling the smells. And the woman says, "May I help you?" And so then we place her order we pay for it. And we grab our tray and get her drinks and go and sit down. And then shortly thereafter, our food's ready. So we sit down and we unwrap our meal and start to eat it and enjoy it. And as we're finishing up or probably hamburger and we're emptying out, we've got that little carton of all the fries and you got the little bits, little crunchy bits down the bottom. You know those are fantastic. And you throw that little thing up and pour it into your mouth. And as you're finishing it, you're thinking I'm not full, I'm still hungry.

00:02:13.050 --> 00:02:22.469
And I remember this happening on a number of occasions and even saying to Anita, like, I'm still hungry. If we're going to spend another few hours on the road.

00:02:19.590 --> 00:02:27.449
I've got to get me something more to eat. And I would go back and get another burger and fries and Biggie size it.

00:02:27.530 --> 00:02:35.060
Yeah. And then everybody would see daddy going back and they'd all want an extra one, too, because they were so hungry, even after the full meal.

00:02:35.430 --> 00:02:53.939
And once you make your way through that second Biggie meal, you sit back and you're finally feeling full. And you think good night. How much food Did I just eat? I mean, you almost have this thought in your mind, like am I a total food glutton here. Yeah, what what's the issue?

00:02:54.539 --> 00:03:14.849
And it's really good that at that point, I don't think we ever really were big calorie counters, because we just hated the idea that we knew was miserable. And if we had counted the calories in that, we probably would have just freaked out, it was probably two or three days worth of calories for us. But we didn't care, we were hungry, we want to have some food and

00:03:14.969 --> 00:04:09.900
And, we were on the road. And we needed to get the meal done, and head out back on the highway. But looking now, the big issue was what we were eating lacked fiber. Animal products, it doesn't matter what it is whether it's meat, eggs, dairy, they all lack fiber. Now you'll say, hey, but Jarrod, you know, there were potatoes? Well, when you look at the refined potatoes, there really probably is not much in the way of fiber with those because they're processed, it's a lot of starch that you would easily break down. And then of course, you probably have that token piece of lettuce and that token piece of tomato on there, which is not much in the way of fiber not for that little easier. And then the button it's such a refined product that when you take the wheat you've you've taken all that fiber out of it. And so now it's just the the starchy part of the wheat.

00:04:10.139 --> 00:04:33.750
How many people do you think do not get their fiber needs met every day? Keep in mind, all animal foods are missing fiber? Would it shock you to learn that? The answer is 95% of people do not get their fiber needs met. And it's not just that they barely miss it. I mean, it's an extremely huge difference in what you're supposed to have.

00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.129
It's just nowhere close.

00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:57.500
Yeah, and when we're eating and we think this was even how we did things and back in the old days of how we were living just you'd have mate with almost every meal and if it wasn't that with us, especially it was dairy and it would be a huge portion of what we're eating, cheeses, sour creams, milk butters, all those thing yogurts, all of those things.

00:04:57.529 --> 00:04:59.870
And many times those were on refined food products.

00:04:59.870 --> 00:05:04.430
Were fibres had been extracted out of it. So like a refined pasta, this, let's say,

00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:09.170
Yeah, well, white pasta.

00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:20.360
So you think about 95% of people, and we were one of them not getting enough fiber. And the majority people are walking around worried about where am I going to get my protein? Why?

00:05:16.939 --> 00:05:42.439
Why are we worried about protein? What we need to be more focused on is where are we getting our fiber, because when we hear that 95% of people don't get their fiber needs met every day. That means they're only 5% of people walking around enjoying the whole plant foods they need on a daily basis, because plant foods are the source of fiber.

00:05:43.189 --> 00:05:55.939
And we weren't just missing the fiber, we were also missing the other incredible nutrients that whole plant foods bring. That, I believe contributed to our pain, our fatigue, we both had vascular problems, and weight issues.

00:05:55.970 --> 00:06:17.209
Yes. And once we made that shift, we even had things like skin cleared up, headaches went away, joint aches, moves a number of different issues, that when you don't have enough fiber, this is going to get a little personal but the waste that's inside of you cannot move out. There's nothing there to give it proper bulk to eliminate.

00:06:17.370 --> 00:06:18.300
It lingers,

00:06:18.449 --> 00:06:20.970
Exactly you got to push.

00:06:18.449 --> 00:06:20.970
it out.

00:06:21.028 --> 00:06:32.639
Well, when you think about length, what the waste lingering like that you think, what are all the repercussions of that. Because people don't want to talk about this. We don't want to think about it.

00:06:29.999 --> 00:07:11.639
But you have to if you're thinking about your health, and why are all these things going on with my health, and I don't feel good, and I don't have energy and I'm hurting and I have reflux, or I've been diagnosed with a certain type of cancer, or I have diverticulosis, or autoimmune diseases can all be linked back to issues like this with fiber where you have breaks in your, in the cells that are there in your intestines, there's one layer of cells that that separates your intestinal area with the rest of your body. And when that is broken, then people get autoimmune diseases and different kinds of diseases like that.

00:07:11.689 --> 00:07:21.019
Well, now think about this. Okay, let's say you happen to live in a seedy neighborhood.

00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:46.759
I hope you don't. But let's say you do and you have a fence around your house. Well, what if the panel or every other panel of your fence was missing? Yeah, that might let some of those bad characters into your yard? Well, that's kind of what happens in your gut, you've got this one cell thin lining, that helps to protect what's going on the inside of your gut, and separating it from your body.

00:07:47.089 --> 00:08:18.529
And whenever you don't have the fiber, which it's in addition to just the health benefits it brings, it's also feeding the good guys in your gut. And it helps keep it healthy, helps keep everything intact. When that breaks down, it starts letting bad bacteria in. It lets whole, or not fully digested food products and and then your body starts to say,"What's this, we don't recognize this." And then there's this immune reaction, this inflammatory reaction. And then before you know it, there's just chaos going on,

00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:41.850
You're inflamed, you're hurting their disease processes that are starting and a lot of it can be traced back to not all of it, but a lot of it to our lack of fiber in our daily eating patterns. Alright, so Jarrod mentioned something about the gut bacteria, the good guys that are in our gut. So what you need to know is there are a lot of different kinds of bacteria.

00:08:41.850 --> 00:09:03.330
And based upon the foods that you've been eating in the past, you have built up the certain colonies that are specifically in your gut, some people have a much better array of different types of bacteria that work for them. And some have fed more of the ones that work against them.

00:08:59.429 --> 00:09:10.379
And when you feed the ones that aren't working for you, or you don't feed the good guys, it's really more of the case, right?

00:09:07.019 --> 00:10:19.139
So they're not getting the fiber that they need, then you can get sick so that the fiber is the food you hear the term prebiotic fibers are prebiotics. So when you're getting fiber out of your plant foods, then you're feeding the good gut bacteria. And what's really interesting about that is the different gut bacteria that are good, and that are on your side require different types of fiber. So just for instance, you might have a good gut bacteria that needs fiber that's found in black beans and you have another good gut bacteria type of it that is requiring the fiber from watermelon. And so if you're not getting a variety of whole plant foods, not just the same green beans every day as your little tiny side dish with your maid and your loaded baked potato When things like that, then you're not going to be fueling your body in the way that it needs. And those good guys can't flourish and help you out. And what we're finding more and more as time goes on, science is showing the link that those bacteria have with our health.

00:10:14.610 --> 00:10:34.740
And when they are flourishing, and when we can get those populations established that are flourishing, they actually work for us, they release things that help us. And our gut actually even communicates with our brain, which is very interesting. So there are a lot of things to talk about there.

00:10:34.740 --> 00:10:47.490
This is more emerging science where they think that our body communicates with the bacteria and vice versa. And they're still kind of figuring out how that works. But it's, it's quite fascinating.

00:10:47.850 --> 00:11:08.789
Okay, and here's some other another thing that can happen. If you don't have enough fiber, you are not going to feel full. Or remember in the story where we talked about, we were just full, we weren't getting full, we would eat a whole meal with all these probably thousands of calories, one of this big emails, and we were going back for more where we gluttons, were we just terrible people who just wanted food all the time,

00:11:08.820 --> 00:11:10.379
We just weren't satisfied.

00:11:10.830 --> 00:11:16.919
We were hungry. Because we didn't have the fiber, we didn't have the bulk in size.

00:11:13.080 --> 00:11:40.740
But we also didn't have that roughage in there. And what happens is, when you have the good whole plant foods, you're the receptors in your stomach, it gets full faster. And so the receptors when your stomach stretches, notifies your brain, hey, you're full, you're no longer hungry. Well, that doesn't happen with white bread and processed things and meat.

00:11:36.360 --> 00:12:48.419
So and, and the French fries, and all those types of things that just doesn't happen. So your brain doesn't get those signals, and you are still hungry. It's a physical response. It's very real. And it's very natural. It's your body crying out for the food that it really needs and requires on a daily basis for you to have the energy you need for you to not feel exhausted all the time and just live for the time and you can fall into bed at night. I mean, now we're nearing 50 years old, right. And I was so sick that time that I described you, if you haven't listened to it, go back to Episode One, where we describe our journey for you to understand where we're coming from, and why we have such a heart to help people understand how to live this way. And now that we live the whole food, plant based lifestyle, everything has changed for us. I mean, we're back in the game, we're living the life that we've always wanted to live doing the things we wanted to do, enjoying our time making our memories with families and family and friends and just getting out there and living life. And the main thing is, you know, out, I wanted to just fall into bed all day long. And now it gets 11 o'clock at night and I'm having to force myself to go to bed.

00:12:44.250 --> 00:13:26.519
Because our energy level is so good. I still have energy at 11 o'clock at night after going full steam all day long. And they say when you get you're just getting older, you know you don't people used to say stuff like that does when you're just getting older. And this is just what happens. And it's not right. That's not what our mindset should be. And it's not reality, your genes don't have to define your destiny, your just because you're getting a year older doesn't mean you should be feeling worse. So you have to found out find ways to feel your body, right. And it it needs its fiber, it's got to have the fiber and those nutrients that it requires to give you the energy you need to be able to make it through your day.

00:13:26.820 --> 00:13:49.320
And I just want to bring up the point like what we teach, you do not need to obsess upon the numbers. Normally 25 to 35 grams a day of fibers what you need. The thing about that is if you eat enough plant food, to fuel your energy needs, you're going to get enough fiber.

00:13:45.629 --> 00:14:13.169
Absolutely. What we've seen is people that come from the dieting mindset, they're they're counting the numbers of calories and this and that number of points. Once they get freedom from that, they still bring that over and start looking at, you know how many milligrams of a vitamin or in the case of this, how many grams of fiber. And we just want you to know, if you're eating enough plant food throughout the day, you're going to easily get enough fiber

00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:33.639
if you're it getting the variety. So you need to get variety in there, right? Because if you eat a lot of whole plant foods and enough to get the calories you need and to make you folder in the day, what if you're just getting that in potatoes, or beans and potatoes every day but you're not getting your leafy greens, you're not getting the other variety of things. So you want to get...

00:14:33.639 --> 00:14:34.779
You won't get the full benefit.

00:14:34.809 --> 00:14:52.059
Get a good variety, but don't try to hack and figure out how do I get the most fiber which foods is going to give me the most fiber which has the least fiber that I should eat the least of now get a wide variety of whole plant foods and then you're going to get all the fiber you need.

00:14:52.080 --> 00:15:08.549
Now, you may be thinking"Alright, Jarrod, I hear what you're saying. I like it. It's a little new to me. But I'm really not sure where to start where to go. You're maybe I'm not where you are just yet." We just want you to know, that's okay.

00:15:09.539 --> 00:15:10.860
Yeah, there's no judgment here.

00:15:10.889 --> 00:15:46.320
There's no judgment here, if you're not ready to go all in, and we mean, just really just dive headfirst and you make all those changes just yet. You can do them one at a time. I mean, that's really what we did now, because for us it was, we were finding little pieces of information as we search them out bit by bit. And so that was our journey. And I think we would have gone a lot faster just because of what the situation Anita was in. So if you're in one of those do or die situations, you can go faster.

00:15:41.940 --> 00:15:52.379
But if not, it's okay. It's okay. You can make these incremental changes, make one change, make it a habit, make another change, make it a habit.

00:15:52.769 --> 00:16:02.370
And then before you know it, a year from now, your life looks completely different. But we want you to know that in teaching this, there is no judgment here. We're here we're rooting for you.

00:16:02.429 --> 00:16:11.610
Yes, small change adds up to big change over time. If you think about what happens if you make one change a week? I mean, what happens?

00:16:11.789 --> 00:16:13.649
Oh, that's 52 changes in a year.

00:16:13.710 --> 00:16:44.789
Yeah. So you look back a year from now your life looks completely different, you feel different, everything changes for you, possibility start to open up. But this is absolutely your choice. Because jerr not realize it's your life, you have to decide what changes you want to see, and how you're going to best make those happen for yourself. But what we don't want you to do is keep going without the information that you need on how do I make those changes, or keep going and feeling like nobody's on your side, and everybody's telling you just stop doing what you're doing.

00:16:41.909 --> 00:16:44.789
And they're not showing you how.

00:16:45.019 --> 00:16:52.909
And the other thing is, is you've heard us say this, you don't know what you don't know.

00:16:48.409 --> 00:17:03.559
So you don't have the choice, if you don't know the choices there. So we want you to have that choice and what works for you may not work for someone else. Each person is different.

00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:11.180
And they're just there certain things that work extremely well for a friend that maybe not as much for you, because you need to make those decisions.

00:17:11.180 --> 00:17:51.259
Yeah, within the realm of eating healthy plant based. I mean, what Jarrod saying is there's so many different choices within that. So within the things that we know are the healthiest things to do. You might eat differently, even today than you eat the next season. Let's just say it's fall, then you might eat differently in the spring than you do in the fall. So there's a difference in how you eat over time within the realm of even healthy plant based. So you have to decide how that looks for you. And that's something we help walk people through as well. But we are so excited for you that you decided to join us today. Whatever you decide, thanks for hanging out with us.

00:17:48.140 --> 00:17:51.259
