00:00:47.820 --> 00:01:04.890
Welcome to this episode of smarter, healthy living. We are excited to have you here with us. We want to talk about the number one superfood that you must eat. Do you know what that is? I need to I do? Do you really? All right. Well, first of all I want to talk about I

00:01:04.888 --> 00:01:07.618
think I do. I hope I'm not wrong. I don't

00:01:07.620 --> 00:01:17.879
think you're wrong. And you'll find out why in just a moment. But the term superfood, there is actually no such thing.

00:01:18.480 --> 00:01:35.730
When you look up there really is no definition of what makes a superfood. I read not long ago that a company the United Fruit Company in the early 1900s first coined that to talk about bananas, calling them a superfood. Wow, I

00:01:35.760 --> 00:01:38.340
totally didn't know that you took me by surprise. I

00:01:38.340 --> 00:01:56.400
know I like doing that catch you like that. So and I find that so amazing, just because we do hear that term a lot about superfoods. And obviously we want to get superfoods into our lives into our bodies because we want to keep them healthy.

00:01:57.299 --> 00:02:05.969
Do you think we get this idea though, that if it's a superfood, it has to be some exotic thing that grows somewhere out in a jungle that's really hard to get? And

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:28.349
I do I really do. And I think about how maybe 15 years ago, OSI Berry, which is from South America, it was something we had, I think, in large scale had not heard of before. I know I hadn't before there was this product called MonaVie. And you may have heard of this before, but there was a product. I'm not even sure if it's still around.

00:02:25.650 --> 00:02:32.789
But I know a Siberia was one of the main components. And it was supposed to be very healthy for you. And it actually is

00:02:32.849 --> 00:02:36.060
and the cheese and the bottle. Yeah, yeah, it

00:02:36.060 --> 00:02:47.009
was part of a multilevel marketing company. But it is very healthy. But I think because many people had not heard of it before. It's like, Oh, this is the magic elixir.

00:02:47.009 --> 00:02:48.930
This is the key to eternal life.

00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:50.550
It's what's been missing, right?

00:02:50.580 --> 00:02:56.400
The the missing key here. And all the while. It's it wasn't bad for you.

00:02:56.430 --> 00:02:58.289
No but right for you,

00:02:58.319 --> 00:03:26.069
but it's not the one end all be all. Other ones are mangosteen. I mean, that's one that I seem like it came and then has gone. It's still out there. But as far as the big fad, it came and went there was another one like, I can't quite, I'm drawing a blank on it, but there have been many of them out there. And so I don't want to burst anybody's bubble. But there really is no one superfood.

00:03:26.099 --> 00:03:33.000
Now there are a lot of superfoods and you need to be getting all of them or a lot.

00:03:29.580 --> 00:03:35.909
You don't have to have all of them, you need to be getting a lot of them.

00:03:36.180 --> 00:04:10.229
And my variety will begin all of the world's a big place they'll probably play uberflip superfoods that have yet to be discovered. But I do believe that the world was created where there are superfoods everywhere. Also in each area, but also even available during different times of the year two, a superfood that is a favorite of ours is blueberries. We absolutely love berries. We talk about it all the time on this podcast because there are so many health benefits that keep getting found that things that they help with.

00:04:10.650 --> 00:04:28.889
And so it's a superfood is right there. You have easy access to it, but I will I bet that there are some other ones that you'd be shocked at. When you really go and look at and when you stop worrying about the exotic ones from faraway lands that have never been heard of and that this is this is the missing key.

00:04:29.129 --> 00:04:29.850
No.

00:04:30.509 --> 00:04:41.730
But you do need superfoods. And if you can get some extra ones in your life that you don't normally get, you're going to get nutrients that you're not normally getting at least more of them, right?

00:04:41.819 --> 00:04:57.930
Yes. And some of what I think people people think of with superfoods are ones that are nutritionally dense, or they have a lot of phytonutrients in them are very high in antioxidants. A good example would be cacau right Cal is considered a superfood.

00:04:58.709 --> 00:05:01.740
Again superfood of life.

00:04:58.709 --> 00:05:05.069
Yeah, let's just let's just clarify here. It's a superfood of love.

00:05:05.579 --> 00:05:10.920
And superfoods can be very, very delicious. I mean, we're proven this on a daily basis.

00:05:10.949 --> 00:05:20.339
Look, it's in my cup right now my very happy beach happy cup right here, the one that brings me joy. It's filled with a beverage of joy, which is made of kickout.

00:05:20.699 --> 00:05:22.800
Yes, and she was kind enough to make a double portion.

00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:33.120
So she has shared it with me, so I'm a benefactor of her cooking talents. But with cacau, we may not think of it as a superfood.

00:05:33.149 --> 00:05:36.990
And my point I was making before is it's very, very high in antioxidants. It's

00:05:37.230 --> 00:05:40.170
like well may not know what Cook County is, because we think we're here.

00:05:40.350 --> 00:05:46.470
Okay, that's true. cacau is unprocessed cocoa. So really very similar.

00:05:46.709 --> 00:05:48.060
It's just less processed,

00:05:48.089 --> 00:05:55.769
it's less processed. But honestly, I'm not really sure what the processing does. I know it's our colonized. But the cocoa powder,

00:05:55.829 --> 00:05:57.959
it's delicious was like delicious.

00:05:58.410 --> 00:06:22.949
And I don't think it has any less of a storage life to it. So I'm not really sure why they did it. Maybe I should look into that do a little research on that. But I do know though, that cacau has four times the antioxidants. Now, cocoa powder, when you look at there's a scale called or act that measures objectively how much antioxidant capacities in a specific food.

00:06:23.490 --> 00:06:56.610
cow has around 90,000 on that scale. And whereas the regular cocoa was around 20 to 25, it's about a fourth of it. So I do know that it cuts that dramatically. But I will say though, that compared to a cheeseburger, that cocoa powder, even though being processed is way better for you. Yeah, so much more nutrient value in that. So but super foods that you may not think of are even things as simple as onions.

00:06:57.720 --> 00:07:07.889
Love, we put them in everything pretty much except you sir. Right? Pretty much everything except dessert. Can you think of many things? We don't put onions on? No. Garlic,

00:07:07.949 --> 00:07:09.930
we think of it as a dessert.

00:07:11.009 --> 00:07:17.910
No, and it's not just white onions. It's yellow onions. And it's different types of onion. Oh, yeah.

00:07:19.470 --> 00:07:21.209
Just regular yellow onions.

00:07:21.300 --> 00:07:49.439
Yeah, and you gotta have your purple one signifies a superfood that we don't get a lot of right. Just think whole plant foods when you think superfood think called plant foods. Now, that's not to say you shouldn't be eating some of the other things like Jared said, we eat cacao powder, you know, that's something package that we buy, but it's minimally processed. It's incredible for you, there are a lot of studies out there about it, that show how it helps to fight disease and different things like that.

00:07:47.639 --> 00:07:54.329
Now, you don't want to drink a lot of it at night, because it does have some caffeine in it, which does affect some people,

00:07:54.569 --> 00:07:56.129
depending on how sensitive you are to

00:07:56.160 --> 00:08:45.899
it just depends. But you know, we drink other things like Alma powder, I mean, we put that in our smoothies also. And I think that's excellent for people, macho, macho, considered matcha is fantastic. You got matcha Actually, these are some of these things are things we thought about providing to people through a product line down the road. And that's something you can look forward to come out at some point because we really believe in the value of these things. But what we don't want you to do is get stuck on one thing. No, yeah, you've got to have a variety. So don't just eat all the other trash and think you're just gonna eat you know, this little scape of something in your protein shake and you're good to go. It's just It doesn't work that way it doesn't we want a quick fix, but it just doesn't work that way.

00:08:45.928 --> 00:08:53.428
One delicious chocolate beverage does not undo the damage that all the other stuff does in a daily or weekly basis.

00:08:53.460 --> 00:09:09.480
But isn't it nice to have one delicious chocolate beverage that you know that everything isn't in it? Everything in it is good for you. Not only does it taste good, but it makes us feel good. And we're still having a chocolatey dessert shake in our mag but there's nothing bad in this we don't

00:09:09.870 --> 00:09:21.029
feel free Yeah. As good as the other stuff. But like you said everything in it is delicious and health promoting exactly promotes healing. It does not harm.

00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:28.470
So I have put I made it and it took me all of about two minutes, maybe one minute to make it because I know how well yeah.

00:09:29.730 --> 00:09:32.279
Once you know how you Boom, boom, boom, throw stuff in there.

00:09:32.308 --> 00:09:36.178
It's so fast. It's quick, and it's delicious. And it makes me you know,

00:09:36.210 --> 00:09:41.309
it's funny because I say I say it's boom, boom boom quick, but I don't actually make

00:09:42.389 --> 00:09:43.169
quick for you.

00:09:43.918 --> 00:09:51.928
Yes, it is nice to be me. It is nice to be me. I will confess. factor but that's the thing, talent.

00:09:52.739 --> 00:09:55.229
Thank you, but you could make it right.

00:09:55.259 --> 00:09:56.279
Oh absolutely. Yeah,

00:09:56.279 --> 00:10:22.139
like it's not that it's hard. It's just saying you don't cuz I just get it. Throw everything in the blender. And that's it, it's done. And here's an example of how easy it is to get some nice things. Another superfood is maringa, which I've recently discovered using that and my morning oats. I'm just I'm in this habit, she feels so good. Have you noticed a difference since you've been eating it because I've noticed a difference. Since I've been putting it in my shakes and things I don't

00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:32.519
I can't say that I have specifically but but I've been putting the cacau and blueberries in my morning oats every morning for quite some time. So I

00:10:32.548 --> 00:10:38.698
get that based from those as far as that antioxidants, phytonutrients, all those great things that are in there.

00:10:38.938 --> 00:11:06.389
And then I actually have one list even listed oatmeal as a superfood. But that's because I think not just for the health benefits to us directly, but also because it is a great prebiotic for the bacteria in your gut. And that is going to give you a ton of health benefits. as well. I mean too numerous to even go into. And I think we don't even fully appreciate and understand all the different health benefits that come from now.

00:11:06.389 --> 00:12:07.019
I mean, the prebiotic Jarrod is talking about is the grains and that will help plant seeds have a lot of fiber fiber, right. So animal foods like meats and dairy, eggs, things like that do not have any fiber in them. And 97% of people are deficient do not have nearly enough fiber every day. And that's why we walk around with a lot of the health problems are rooted in the gut not getting what it needs. So the bacteria in your gut require this fiber, that's their food. And if you're eating animal products, which have zero fiber in them, then your gut bacteria, the good ones are not getting fed, they're dying, the bad ones are thriving. And then disease comes from that we won't get into everything about that today, because that's not what this episode is about. But all that to say you need all these wonderful ingredients in these super foods because they are super, they taste super. They make you feel super, and they're super healing, they reverse diseases. We're all about them.

00:12:04.289 --> 00:12:15.929
But don't just think there's just one super fade that's going to do everything. You need a variety of different superfoods in your life and you'll start feeling super,

00:12:18.269 --> 00:12:41.940
a lot better. And it's good to use a little bit. So like with the maringa, I've started putting maybe half a teaspoon, I would say on my morning oats mixing that also with the cow and it gives a little bit of a flavor. It's not a grassy flavor, but it is it's a different flavor, but I actually really liked it. It blends so well with the cow and the blueberries. And I'm just

00:12:42.149 --> 00:12:44.339
Jaden Smith it used to yes,

00:12:44.460 --> 00:12:57.360
oh yes when kittens so these you'll put it in with smoothies, they have berries and it's just it's a great combination, another superfood but you're getting a little bit of a lot of different things.

00:12:54.299 --> 00:13:12.659
You know in Japan, they recommend that you get 30 different plants per day. So notice they're not saying you need 30 pounds of this one plant. They're saying they recommend because of the necessity of the variety and the variety of the different nutrients in the different plants.

00:13:12.688 --> 00:13:22.499
You're making me hungry, I want to go to the store now I'm ready to shop I just picture myself grabbing a buggy walking through the store all happy because I'm ready to put 30 different

00:13:22.708 --> 00:13:25.168
through the aisle with about three buggies and

00:13:25.769 --> 00:13:31.080
you know actually I did that today except I didn't go to the store. You know what I did?

00:13:28.049 --> 00:14:32.759
I got online and ordered store the store groceries right to my door and let me tell you something that is the bomb if you're a busy woman looking to save some time and you've never ever used something like the whole foods order online and have it sent to your door instacart or for greenwise or wherever you live. If you have a grocery delivery, and you've got some good grocery delivery people, it is worth the extra money to go to your door. It is amazing. And they have been picking the best produce. It has been fantastic for us. We love that it says by the time I get in my car, go to the store, walk around buy all the things that weren't on my list, get back to the house. I mean, I've spent more money and time you know your time is worth something really valuable. I could have gone on bike ride with the kids while somebody else is gathering my groceries at the store now we need to know how to get gather our groceries and we need to go to the store and get familiar with what's there. I really believe we need to know those things and sometimes going to the store and just experience a being there and walking around.

00:14:32.970 --> 00:14:48.870
You see me things that you want to try. So I don't recommend always doing this. But I'm telling you if you're a busy executive woman or you're a mom and you've got a busy schedule, this is the way to go. It's a great way to save time, but you can go there and find new superfoods.

00:14:48.899 --> 00:15:28.049
Well that's the thing too is that if you have somebody bringing it to your door then you're not there to see what's not available and in season but now we are not endorsed by Whole Foods. This Episode is not endorsed by Whole Foods. But we happen to have a whole foods about maybe 30 minutes away from us. And just like you say, the time that's involved with going there and coming back that right there is an hour just travel time, exactly, then the time shopping, so that if you already know what you want, you can put that in the computer, and then they deliver it. They don't charge any extra although we do tip the driver for their time.

00:15:23.580 --> 00:15:31.620
But the amount of money that you tip, you will make up for that in that time savings.

00:15:31.798 --> 00:15:32.729
And again, one of our

00:15:33.658 --> 00:16:03.149
holdups with that is we thought, are they really gonna pick good produce? Because when we're having apples, bananas, whatever, cabbage lettuce, we obviously want the freshest. We don't want the old stuff that's about to expire. So that was our concern. So we stick right, I think we ordered just a couple things, ordered some apples, you know, some things that would be easy. And they were the best, you know, I can't prove this, but I think they may have been picking from the back where the good stuff,

00:16:03.870 --> 00:16:08.279
I don't know, going around in the store with the baggies, gravy, I don't know.

00:16:08.340 --> 00:16:17.250
But the produce looks so good that I thought, you know, maybe they're trying to really impress us and get it from the good stuff, you know, the stuff they have on the shelf yet, I don't

00:16:17.249 --> 00:16:39.448
know. But it's been fantastic. And I'll tell you, they're not the only store there are a lot of stores even this now, especially with the rise of different concerns that people are having out in the world today about getting sick when you go out and all that. So we're not overly worried about that or anything like that. It's not that we're trying to not go out all the time or anything.

00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:58.708
It's just the convenience of it is so nice. I'm a bit spoiled now. But I do enjoy going to the store. Like we're saying finding new products to try new produce items, even things that we don't always get some things that are there seasonally, like sunchokes are amazing. Those are probably considered a superfood, drizzle.

00:16:54.629 --> 00:16:59.818
marchex. Yes, they're wonderful, filled with fiber.

00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:06.720
And they're extremely high in inulin, which is also a prebiotic, and it's very good for feeding your gut bacteria.

00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:08.430
They're delicious.

00:17:06.779 --> 00:17:08.430
They're wonderful.

00:17:08.460 --> 00:17:23.640
You know, we discovered those in the supermarket. We came across this and said sunchoke, also known as Jerusalem artichokes. I went and looked it up. And we found out that they are not from Jerusalem, and they aren't artichoke. But they're called a sonship.

00:17:23.669 --> 00:17:28.439
That's it. Get a lot of these foods in your life.

00:17:28.648 --> 00:17:32.818
berries are not the devil, they are carbs, but they're good carbs.

00:17:32.849 --> 00:17:36.509
And they may not be as high as you think as far as the amount of sugar that's in them.

00:17:36.539 --> 00:17:39.029
Exactly. But it doesn't matter. Don't worry about that.

00:17:39.029 --> 00:17:53.369
Because the thing is that sugar that's in there comes with a whole host of well, disease fighting and health promoting benefits. I mean, it's just this package of vagueness, and you

00:17:53.369 --> 00:17:59.880
don't see those on the package label either. Oh, no, it doesn't give you a measurement of phytonutrients and all that.

00:18:00.089 --> 00:18:01.529
Well, generally, they're in there.

00:18:01.559 --> 00:18:06.599
And generally, if you're eating the things you need to be eating, there's not going to be a package label anyway. Right?

00:18:06.720 --> 00:18:34.410
Because the best things they don't have a label, they just can prep for you the way you were intended to have them and they're just delicious. They're so good. So good for you.
