00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.850
Yeah, and we people stop and ask us this all the time.

00:00:02.850 --> 00:00:15.210
What are you doing? Why is their skin so clear? How does your skin look so clear? What do you and usually it's what what are you putting on it? What do you put on your face? And so we think about putting things on it.

00:00:15.240 --> 00:00:20.309
Oh, it's just so ingrained with us that if we have clear skin, there must be a product or medication that

00:00:20.370 --> 00:00:44.460
you're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jarrod and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. 00:00:44.460 --> 00:00:44.880
love.

00:00:45.390 --> 00:00:54.990
If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started.

00:00:56.070 --> 00:01:43.560
Welcome to smarter, healthy living. If this is your first time listening to us, welcome, we are so glad to have you here with us. If you again, don't know anything about us, if you've not seen us on Facebook or blog, go back to episode number one where you can hear Anita story, you hear all about the struggles that she went through, and how all of that brought us to our whole food plant based lifestyle. Now, a couple episodes ago, we talked about our oldest daughter, and a basically a praise report that we got from the eye doctor about her eye pressure. Go back and listen to that one. But just just a brief overview. She had elevated eye pressure, we went all in whole food plant base, and it came back down to normal.

00:01:43.590 --> 00:01:47.879
Well, within normal. Yes. And that's all we did. That's all we changed so

00:01:47.939 --> 00:01:53.159
and that worry is just lifted off us. Now, we don't have that anymore. I mean, that's a mom worry. And we don't

00:01:53.219 --> 00:02:03.599
really ever have to worry about it again. Now, of course, we'll keep checking that with our annual eye visits. But we don't have to worry thinking okay, this year, is it going to be up? Is it going to be down?

00:02:00.840 --> 00:02:13.199
Right? Are we gonna have to start a medication, anything like that, because when it's your teenager, that's obviously very concerning. I mean, you you want to protect your children and give them the absolute best.

00:02:13.590 --> 00:02:30.360
But in doing that, we started thinking about some other aspects of their health and questions that we got. One of the things is that our 16 year old daughter and our 14 year old son is they don't ever worry or have to deal with acne,

00:02:30.479 --> 00:02:43.710
because it's all the time. What are you doing? Why is their skin so clear? How does your skin look so clear? What do you and usually it's what what are you putting on it? What do you put on your face? And so we think about putting things on it?

00:02:43.740 --> 00:03:04.710
Oh, it's just so ingrained with us that if we have clear skin, there must be a product a medication that we take selection of lotion. I mean, there's so many different products and Anita and I when we were teenagers, we ate meat at every meal, dairy at most every every meal. I don't recall not having milk at any of our meals.

00:03:02.009 --> 00:03:12.750
I mean breakfast, lunch and dinner. And so I never had cystic acne where it was the really terrible, inflamed type acne, but I had bumps all over.

00:03:12.990 --> 00:03:22.469
And I even remember having to use it was a special kind of soap that had benzoyl peroxide, then I would use retin a gel topically.

00:03:22.770 --> 00:04:00.689
Why cystic acne. I mean, my mom asked a friend who was she knew was going to dermatologist I went to the dermatologist ended up on retina, which was the cream I put on my face. Plus I took antibiotics and I can't even remember for how long I think I took antibiotics for two years, which if I knew at that point, what taking antibiotics can do to your gut health and how long that can take to repair sometimes, I would have never done that my mom had me take antibiotics either. But we didn't know. And so we just think, well, if we think about putting something on our skin, well first of all, let's talk about that. I mean your your skin is your largest organ

00:04:01.469 --> 00:04:02.250
in your body.

00:04:02.370 --> 00:04:18.480
And so if you're putting something on your largest organ and it's seeping into your system, it's going to affect you. And that includes your soaps, your conditioners or shampoos, your lotions, medications, anything like that is going to go in and it's not without effect.

00:04:18.540 --> 00:04:25.319
And we think of our skin as being a barrier, which it is, but it's not a 100% barrier.

00:04:21.870 --> 00:04:41.639
Like you're saying things will soak into your body. I know being a PA there are certain prescriptions that are topical anti inflammatories, and they're designed to soak through your skin to get to the structures underneath. So yes, absolutely.

00:04:37.230 --> 00:04:43.889
Anything you put on your skin potentially goes inside of you.

00:04:44.100 --> 00:04:54.209
And then you know if it's not something that's topical, like we talked about with Madeline It was either the options for her higher eye pressure if they continued to get higher. The only options would have been a drop

00:04:54.269 --> 00:04:54.720
drop

00:04:54.750 --> 00:05:45.660
and that's kind of like putting something on her skin, you know, a drop of medication or taking something Internally, and Well, that was surgery for that, or maybe at medication or taking something internally, but I'm thinking we always think about, you're going to put something on it, or you're going to take a medication, but we don't ever think about what else we're taking into our body. And our body might be giving us a sign. And it is when you have things like skin issues, your body's telling you something, it's trying to clean out the toxins and the things that are in there. And so you just taking a medication to cover it up isn't gonna address the root cause. But once you can understand how to easily address a root cause. And I'm saying easily, you know, we expect in this fast food society that we're living in that we're going to do something real quick and do it once. And it's going to cure everything. But how long did it take us to get in this situation?

00:05:45.779 --> 00:05:48.269
So we really, yeah, sometimes even years,

00:05:48.899 --> 00:06:18.089
right. And so we have to be willing to persevere and be willing to move through the amount of time that it takes to get to where we want to go. And it's just a process. But each day, you can start seeing improvements, and sometimes quite rapidly, when you make the decision to make these changes, and to make them a habit. But it's got to be habit that you love, or you're never gonna do it for life, we talk about that all the time. It's got to be something you live, it's got to be enjoyable, it's got to taste good, if it's your food, right?

00:06:18.240 --> 00:06:32.279
And you've got to build these things in and be intentional about it and find easy ways to do that, that don't take a lifetime and that you don't hate. I could go on I'm thinking of all these different rabbit trails I could get on right now I'm gonna stick to the topic here.

00:06:32.759 --> 00:06:37.319
This is our passion. So we love talking about it. And you will hear us talking about it often.

00:06:37.350 --> 00:06:45.060
Well, it's just because the change, we know that it brings in asset it's brought for our clients, and then we know it can bring for you because I am a busy mom, we talked about that.

00:06:45.060 --> 00:07:10.620
And cheered is a busy dad, we're working full time we have homeschooled our children. And we're just keeping the house and just the daily stuff is enough to keep a mom and a grandma or an aunt busy, right, it's going to keep you going. But if you know how to make these things easy to do, then that frees up your time to do the things that you love and things you want to do. Plus, you're just going to feel like it you're going to feel like getting out there. So we've gone off topic we got to get back to.

00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:33.060
Okay, so people you said something about the skin, it is our largest organ, and we think about anything that we see on the skin as being a problem just of the skin. Yeah, that's not really true. I mean, you can have an excellent super sharp dermatologist that can diagnose other internal problems based upon what they see on your skin.

00:07:33.089 --> 00:07:40.379
Great point. That's a great point. Because your body sending you signs when we have these issues. It's telling you there's something going on here.

00:07:38.009 --> 00:07:43.920
And so we need to start thinking, What's the root cause?

00:07:40.379 --> 00:08:08.430
How do I get to the root so that I can address this thing and it doesn't keep popping out all over my skin or all over my face. The same with our children, right? A lot of times it's what they're eating, and what they're not eating. It's not just what they're eating, that they don't need to eat, it's what they need to be eating, that they're not eating, those two things are both crucial. And they both join together to bring about solutions or problems. That's just that's just what happens.

00:08:08.430 --> 00:08:49.470
So what we want to look at is, what are we doing that's going to help that and one of the major contributions to skin problems is dairy. I mean, it's known as shown by research. And so what we see is that when people don't eat dairy, and they don't eat the meats, and the fats and the oils and things, you just don't have your body show and these things and your skin clears up over and over the testimonials of people who go on healthy plant based and all of a sudden, you know, a couple of weeks down the road, they're not thinking about it, they're not doing it for their skin, people start stopping them What are you doing to your skin, what facial products, what makeup Do you use, and it's not about what they're smearing on their skin.

00:08:49.470 --> 00:09:02.129
It's about what they're putting into their body and what's no longer going in as a result of not being able to have the space to go in. Why because you're getting more of the good stuff and the bad stuff just doesn't have room to occupy anymore.

00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:11.370
We've even noticed with some of our clients how their skin just glows we'll see pictures before absolutely to see the difference. There's more color in their skin

00:09:11.429 --> 00:09:55.559
and that's the great thing about eating this way and fueling your body this way. Not only does it make you feel amazing, it changes things that you're not going after. I mean you may do this like me for your fatigue and all of a sudden your energies through the roof but you don't realize you just dropped 15 or 20 pounds and you weren't even trying to lose weight. I just was hearing a testimonial of a woman this morning. She did this for her glaucoma and she reversed her glaucoma but down the road she's lost How many? 10 pounds 110 pounds I wasn't even trying I lost 110 pounds. We hear it over and over and over nice side effect. I know it is a nice side effect right and we want these things and there are so many wonderful side effects when you start this way of living. It's incredible.

00:09:55.769 --> 00:10:03.269
And one others related to skin one benefit that I noticed and I think we've touched on this before is that body odor to

00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:04.980
oh my goodness, I mean are you

00:10:05.970 --> 00:10:10.289
just decrease greatly.

00:10:05.970 --> 00:10:23.070
If you work in the yard, you don't put any deodorant on, you'll still have that gamey smell. I'm not saying it's completely perfect. But it's not going to be where you put deodorant on, you go out until hot day and 30 minutes later, people are running from you.

00:10:23.190 --> 00:10:31.080
Yeah, it's just it's such a huge difference. And it's because it's affecting the microbes that are on your skin and the way that your skin reacts.

00:10:31.350 --> 00:10:50.220
Well, and the funny thing about that was we weren't again, we weren't doing that for this for that result. But they're just all these different things that you start to notice, like Jared, I mean, I remember you saying one day you just get up and you're going, my arms don't hurt when I'm him anymore. my elbows, my shoulders, my knees.

00:10:47.100 --> 00:10:50.220
I'm not my joints are hurting

00:10:50.370 --> 00:11:06.240
for a couple years. And it wasn't to the point that was debilitating. But it was always there. It was always just kind of sore, you when you're driving down the car, and you try to reach behind you for something, or I'm sorry, driving down the road and a car and you reach for something behind you, which you probably shouldn't do eyes on the road, hands all the way.

00:11:07.259 --> 00:11:12.929
Okay, you're parked at a stoplight, you reach behind you to get something off the backs or to correct the children I just saying,

00:11:14.009 --> 00:11:36.000
catch my arm, and it would be painful. And again, it was never debilitating. But it I remember lasting for least a good two years after this or a couple I mean, after we just went 100% in a whole food plant based a couple months after that. It was almost an afterthought. I said that those same words like hey, I need in my shoulders aren't bothering me anymore.

00:11:36.029 --> 00:11:54.240
But the funny thing is, is when we you never mentioned that really to me. I mean, I don't think I really knew you didn't walk around and say I'm hurting my shoulders. Really to that level I know about what I think it is, is that you get these underlying pains and aches that you just think are a sign of age. It just happens when I get older.

00:11:54.568 --> 00:12:02.068
People are masters at adaptation, and sometimes not even realizing you're doing it.

00:11:58.918 --> 00:12:04.708
I've heard many people say I didn't realize how bad I felt until I felt good.

00:12:05.370 --> 00:12:42.840
And your body has this incredible ability to heal. And if you're specifically looking at skin issues, just get on Google and and all you need to do is Google healthy plant based or plant based and skin. And you will find tons of different people. And you'll find tons of different people tons of different testimonials online talking about skin issues that they've healed. I've seen things like eczema, rosacea, I mean, all kinds of different things with the skin healed. And kids have an eczema going away, things like that. I mean, it happens, allergies are huge asthma.

00:12:43.289 --> 00:12:45.990
Asthma goes along with eczema. There's a link there.

00:12:46.019 --> 00:13:14.549
Yeah. And it's one of many things. And so but you don't think about it, you're just going on it if you're like me, I mean, I reached a desperate point. And I just went all in, do you have to go all in, don't stop yourself from doing this for yourself and your family because you think I can't do that. It's too hard. It's not hard, you can do it. If we can do it, I promise you, you can do it. The research is there, it absolutely works. And it can work for you. You just have to know the simple steps to take to make it happen. You know,

00:13:14.549 --> 00:14:00.690
one thing that comes to mind too, getting back to the acne with teenagers and the medication is that some of the medications are known to cause birth defects. So some of them, the doctors will require the girls to take pregnancy test to prove that they're not pregnant so that there's not accidentally a birth defect from taking that medication. Wow. I mean, we don't think about that aspect of it because we just think I want my child not to have the the mental and physical scars of having the cystic acne. So yes, we're going to jump through all these hoops. And sometimes it may require medication to prevent becoming pregnant so that we don't have that issue from the medication. I mean, just seemed like it can go round and around there. No have that with plant base.

00:14:00.750 --> 00:14:49.860
Okay, so think about the last time you're in a doctor's office and they prescribed a medication for you. And then they sat there and they pulled out a list that dropped to the floor of all the different side effects that happened with with it and they went over each one with you individually. When's the last time that happened? It doesn't happen but you get this box that you don't read the insert and it has a ton of different known side effects of that medication. Do yourself a favor and whatever medicines you're on on a regular basis or that you take periodically throughout the year. Start looking at the side effects of those medications you need to inform yourself because even the things you think are just like the candy meds like temps and roll lights, we've talked about that before go back and listen to episode on reflux and antacids. I don't remember what we call that one. Do you remember? It was just a couple episodes back.

00:14:49.889 --> 00:14:51.899
It's not that far back.

00:14:49.889 --> 00:14:51.899
So number 70.

00:14:51.929 --> 00:15:19.230
Yeah. And so look at the things that you think we think are just candy and we pop them on a regular basis aspirin, anti inflammatories, IV profaned Tylenol, those things can actually destroy gut bacteria now that he's telling you that well with the destruction of your gut bacteria can come a ton of other problems, diagnosis that you don't want. It's not necessary, which is a wonderful name, if you take too much Tylenol stay within the recommended dosing guidelines.

00:15:19.259 --> 00:15:54.000
But if you take too much, it can harm your liver. I mean, so this is just an example of some of the things that these kind of quote unquote innocent over the counter medications can potentially do. Right. And so again, if you've never met us before, just know that we're not anti medication, I'm a registered nurse chair, it's a physician assistant, you know, we understand and get that there's a time and a place for medication. But we also understand and get having been in the system for so long, that they are way overused. So, again, we're not telling you go against your doctor's advice and stop taking on doing all this.

00:15:51.299 --> 00:16:31.139
There are a lot of people that go healthy plant based and come off medications they thought they were going to be on for life. But you do that under a doctor's supervision. Because, again, if you start this way of living, your doctor needs to know and if they're not supportive, there are a lot of vegan and plant based supportive doctors that are out there, many of whom are vegan and plant based themselves. You know, you think about think about this, go to a doctor who's in the health state that you want your health state to be, I want you to think about that for a minute. Look at your doctor, do they have trouble breathing? What is the state of their body? How do they appear? Do they appear healthy?

00:16:31.799 --> 00:16:34.830
If they don't do you want them giving you medical advice,

00:16:34.889 --> 00:17:25.769
and we're not trying to be harsh with it. But it is that and actually, I just remembered there was actually a study done that prove that doctors, pa nurse practitioners, that when they are doing those specific health habits, they're more likely to advise you on them or to recommend them to you, right, so if they eat plant based, they're going to be likely to recommend plant based, if they exercise, they're going to be more likely to recommend exercise and see that as a viable solution to the health problems. So if you have a doctor who's overweight, if you have a doctor that has trouble breathing, I mean, they walk into the room and they sound out of breath. And again, we're not trying to be harsh, and we're not disparaging on what they know. But they may not be living out the best of what they know.

00:17:21.990 --> 00:17:36.660
And they may not be giving you all the best advice that there is not again, not saying medically but they may not be recommending some of these other healthy life habits that could make such a huge difference for you.

00:17:36.750 --> 00:17:42.359
Right? I mean, you wouldn't go to a financial advisor who was bribed and bankrupt. That's true,

00:17:42.480 --> 00:17:48.119
right? True. So you want to do your you have your$5, okay, you're probably not the financial advisor for me.

00:17:48.150 --> 00:18:30.359
Oh, so you want to do your due diligence and all these areas, especially with your medical providers, absolutely right. So do those things for yourself, either. These are the simple things. But when it comes to your skin, the research is there, the testimonials are there, your children can have huge improvements in their shadow on telling you, they'll never have another drop of a pimple. Now, I'm not telling you that that can happen just from you sitting with your hand on your face, like a lot of kids do. I mean, you can get that from just trapping the oils and things like that. I mean, you can get that but you're not going to have the all out. I'm scared about my I'm scared for my child for this and for the things that happen

00:18:30.809 --> 00:18:58.410
with acne could that ruptures and causes all kinds of scarring that cause that scarring on the face? That's all I know, for a while. And unfortunately, you get the emotional scars that can come with that when you're a teenager. Exactly. Feeling self conscious. So right now you have the power to make some of those changes. Oh, yeah, my skin. I mean, that can you can see those improvements within I want to say two to three weeks. And that's I think, calming down.

00:18:58.500 --> 00:19:30.089
And you know, I say moms have that power. But as a grandmother, or an aunt, when when children come to your house, or you go to their there's a new take a treat, you have more power and influence than you realize. I mean, it's huge. Those kids look up to you, you know, you start making those changes, and they start seeing that and you they're going to become curious and want to start making those changes to so it can make a huge difference in the overall health of your family. And not just you but in your family too. Absolutely.

00:19:30.148 --> 00:19:46.679
Well, and we say mom, grandma or aunt, well, maybe you had that title, but maybe you're in a blood relative doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I mean, we have an aunt Tara who's a favorite aunt tear in our family, but she's not a blood relative, but we love her just the same. And she's very influential with our children.

00:19:44.068 --> 00:20:04.648
Oh yes, they love her and she loves them. So again, you still have that impact. And if there are children around you that are always around you, they flock to you. And maybe they call you aunt Sophia or aunt Jane or maybe they don't have Do you have that position? Right? You still have that influence and still have that power?

00:20:04.709 --> 00:20:05.699
Absolutely.

00:20:06.029 --> 00:20:27.210
There is there are so many things you can do. There are so many opportunities waiting for you. We want you to feel great enough to take advantage of all of them. And it is possible. We know the research is there. We know it happened for us. It happens for our clients. It's happened for our friends who are our clients, and it can happen for you too.

00:20:27.480 --> 00:21:05.609
We are so glad that you've joined us today on this beautiful, wonderful day we've all been given. Enjoy the blessings of it be intentional about making the most of every moment, connect with that child when she's handing you the flower and saying, Here mommy here grandma here, Auntie, don't just that okay, eggs, connect with that child, you have a moment to make a difference in their life. And you have a moment every day to make a difference in yours. You just have to take it. We look forward to seeing you next time. And until then, enjoy those fruits and vegetables. And we'll talk to you more soon.
