If nothing else, like basil basil
00:00:01.709 --> 00:00:15.689
is amazing. Okay, it's great for you, but it just tastes so good and there's nothing else like it. So I had this brilliant idea to go back over to the produce section again. And that's when I had my first experience with the spice.
00:00:15.900 --> 00:01:35.459

So one day, I was late getting home and it was time Well, it's getting close to time to starting dinner. And the recipe that I had chosen called for basil. So here I am driving up to the store running in quickly grab a cart, go to the produce section, and I'll start looking around, and I look where the basil normally is, and it's not there. And so then I look where the basil plants would be. There are no basil plants. So then I fly to the seasoning aisle for dried basil. Wouldn't you know they were out? Now what was I gonna do? I could put something else in it. But I want to base off for crying
00:01:35.459 --> 00:01:39.239
out loud. There's nothing else like basil basil is amazing.
00:01:39.390 --> 00:01:42.390
Okay, it's great for you.
00:01:39.390 --> 00:01:53.459
But it just tastes so good. And there's nothing else like it. So I had this brilliant idea to go back over to the produce section again. And that's when I had my first experience with the spice.
00:01:49.680 --> 00:02:06.450
I don't ever want to eat again in her life. It was a tube. Have you ever bought tube spices before a tube full of basil. So I think in my brilliant way, hey, I've never tried this before. But I mean, what could it hurt?
00:02:06.478 --> 00:02:09.868
It says baseball team. I mean, how different could it be?
00:02:09.868 --> 00:02:13.618
You've got dry, you've got fresh. I mean, they're relatively the same. Yeah.
00:02:13.620 --> 00:03:00.870
So I go and I pick it up, put it in the cart, run through the checkout, get in the bat, get it in the bag, get home, make my dish. It did not taste good. I'm just saying that that time in my life looking at ingredients list wasn't something that I did on a regular basis. But let me just tell you, it's one of the best things you can start doing for yourself. If you get nothing else out of listening to this episode, the one take home you need to have is read those ingredients list. Did you know that a large portion of the the herbs and spices that are in the tubes and things that have milk in them, they have oil, they have other added ingredients and artificial flavors and natural flavors. And what else I mean there's so many other things.
00:03:01.080 --> 00:03:06.210
Sometimes they'll have anti caking agents, they may have colorants, they may have stuff like titanium dioxide
00:03:06.239 --> 00:03:17.519
exactly in it, flavor, but it also affects your body, all those extra things that don't need to be there. Usually, if you can't pronounce it, your body wasn't intended to eat it.
00:03:17.609 --> 00:03:33.329
It's just something that's been put there to keep extend the shelf life and it does affect the flavor but it also affects how your body responds to that food you're putting in so long story short, the meal was not good because of the basil
00:03:33.629 --> 00:03:36.270
and got thrown away very, very quickly. It
00:03:36.270 --> 00:04:12.330
would have been so much better. Okay, so here's the insider secret. If you go somewhere you need basil, they don't have basil. Think of other seasonings you could put in their place. Think of other seasonings that would be being an Italian seasoning mix. This is how you get your flavors right. Think about oregano or time or something different that you can put in there that's very close to basil or even by Italian seasoning. I mean that's the possibility to but be careful with those dried seasoning as well read those ingredients because in there especially in the dried they're the anti caking agents because that keeps them from clumping up right?
00:04:12.539 --> 00:04:23.430
Yes, but what amazes me though is we have actually bought it or not bought it but we're going grocery shopping and found it where it had olive oil in it but it was a dried seasoning mix
00:04:23.490 --> 00:04:26.970
exactly why why added oil? I'll stand there s Jarrod?
00:04:26.970 --> 00:04:35.819
I mean seriously, I will be standing in the grocery out with a package of something in my hand just going. Why? Why?
00:04:36.569 --> 00:04:46.829
How many times have you seen me do that? Oh, so too many to count. And I won't if I have my back to her and I hear that I just know in my mind. Let's check another list out why.
00:04:47.129 --> 00:05:11.910
Okay, I'm telling you this could be I mean, there's so many times I've said we've got to create this product, we've got to come up with a product line because seriously, I get so frustrated. I mean there are tons of things that just don't need to have oil or these extra things added and all these different products that have things like, you know, just the anti caking agents, like we said, the natural flavors colors,
00:05:11.939 --> 00:05:23.699
one thing that comes to mind is oil in pasta sauce. I mean, we see that so much, they add olive oil. And I don't really taste it all that much.
00:05:20.670 --> 00:05:39.060
And I don't it doesn't need to be it doesn't really add anything. I think it's just there because we have in our minds that this is a health food. And this is Italian, and it must have olive oil. And so they put it in there, it's not necessary when we find the rare product that doesn't have the olive oil in it, and we buy that I don't taste any difference.
00:05:39.089 --> 00:05:45.120
No, I don't mess it and I'm making it home without olive oil. It's super simple to make.
00:05:41.970 --> 00:06:24.569
If you just have some crushed tomatoes, and spices and things and you learn these formulas for how to put these things together, it is really easy to do. But all of that to say, take time, when you're in the store just to peruse the ingredients list, stop worrying so much about the grams of this and that, yes, you do need to be mindful of that. But the first thing you need to nail, the very first thing is the ingredients list, get a handle on it, look at dairy, look up all the different names that dairy hides. I mean, it's something like 60 something different names, and may even be more now I mean, they find new ways to hide it. And then with sugar, they break up sugar and
00:06:24.928 --> 00:06:27.149
all these different nasty plus different names.
00:06:27.178 --> 00:06:31.048
And one product will have 10 names of sugar on the ingredients list. And
00:06:31.050 --> 00:07:09.600
they do that because each ingredient is listed in the order of amounts. So if they can take sugar and break it up into 10 different things, right, and each one of those has a much smaller amount. So it falls far down the list. When actuality if you just call it a sugar, it could be even the first one on the list. Right? So there are ways of kind of manipulating some of the Yeah, by law, they have to put on the product list what's in it, right? But they can kind of finagle the legal this kind of like the, you know, the legal fine print. Yep, doing it that way.
00:07:09.899 --> 00:07:15.120
Absolutely. And we don't want you to be confused, we don't want you to feel overwhelmed by these things.
00:07:15.420 --> 00:07:50.910
There are really simple ways and simple systems that you can have, basically in your back pocket or in your purse to figure out how to do this. I'm not talking about something literal that you put there. But you just have that as your resource to go to that, you know, you've learned all these things. You've learned formulas that are very simple, quick and easy to follow that when you do step by step, what you know to do, like checking the ingredients list, looking for those things that are milk, or dairy without saying milk or dairy. I mean, it's amazing how many different ways it's in there.
00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:56.819
And then once you find the products that you trust, you go back to those and it's like anything else it becomes habit.
00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:04.529
But we do recommend periodically once or twice a year recheck that list, because sometimes formulations will change. So the
00:08:04.529 --> 00:09:04.320
top spices you want to avoid are the ones that have anything other than the spice in them. If they have salt, oils, additives, preservatives, anti caking agents, milk products, anything like that it should not be there. This is a very easy way to boost your health herbs are amazing for you get more of them if you'd like it. Put more on this is one of the simplest ways to add flavor not only flavor because it makes it taste amazing and you're going to want to eat more of it. But then not only that, it adds these extra phytonutrients that are so plentiful in the herbs that really you don't get that kind of power patch from any other things that you're eating. The herbs and spices are incredible for that. But reach for fresh reach for Dr. But get them without any additives and you will be doing your body a huge favor. And you'll feel great the antioxidants that are in there.
00:09:00.539 --> 00:09:25.259
The anti inflammatory properties if you're hurting and you have joint pain, if you have no get up and go in your day, get more of these things in your life. It will turn it around for you.
