00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.089
This has been out for a very long time. There are numerous studies showing this.

00:00:01.739 --> 00:00:08.609
And I won't get into the specifics of the studies because some of it's a little gruesome.

00:00:10.050 --> 00:00:18.780
But the takeaway from the studies was that by age 10, nearly all children have fatty streaks in their arteries. Now what is that you're

00:00:18.780 --> 00:00:42.420
listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture, where your host, Jarrod and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they

00:00:42.420 --> 00:00:42.869
love.

00:00:43.378 --> 00:01:02.609
If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started. As a mom, I know one of the most important things for me is the health of my children. And, you know, maybe you're asking yourself, Well,

00:01:02.640 --> 00:01:03.240
what what am

00:01:03.240 --> 00:01:05.670
I supposed to do now?

00:01:03.240 --> 00:02:50.669
When am I supposed to start thinking about that, if you don't have children, you're on the right show, because you need to start thinking about it now before you start having children because the shape of your body right now. And the way you the shape you get yourself in is going to affect the health of your children, whether or not you choose to breastfeed, that's going to affect the health of your children. Now, I'm not talking about if for some reason, you absolutely cannot breastfeed because you have some sort of medical condition, or you're required to be on some type of medicine that might go through your breast. Now, there's no guilt here. What I'm talking about is most women are able to breastfeed. So what choice Are we going to make? Are we going to choose to feed our children in a way that sets them up for success? And the answer is yes, we want to do that. And what they eat, what you eat, some of the flavors and things can get to the children through the breast milk. So you're priming their tastebuds from an early age by breastfeeding them not to mention all the other benefits of holding them close and eye contact and how that affects their brain development and their nerve development. I could go on and on as a maternal child, nurse, don't even get me started. But anyway, you know, and then your children are grown. And maybe you're listening to this and you're going, My children are older, you know, they're preteens or teens, or they're in upper elementary school. And I just I don't know how I'm going to switch them from eaten all the mess that we've been eating, you know how to switch them from fully fast food to eating out of the kitchen. We work with our members on learning how to do that. And I don't have time to teach you all of that today. But I do want you to walk away with some tactics and some things that you can do to help your children understand why is that so important that why is it important for reporting from this early of an age? Well, there's some shocking news that we want you guys to understand this been out for a while.

00:02:50.969 --> 00:02:57.150
This has been out for a very long time. There are numerous studies showing this.

00:02:52.800 --> 00:03:41.939
And I won't get into the specifics of the studies, because some of it's a little gruesome. But the takeaway from the studies was that by age 10, nearly all children have fatty streaks in their arteries. Now what does that mean? It means they have streaks of fat and cholesterol deposit in their arteries. This is the precursor to artery disease, atherosclerosis, this is where the vessels become diseased, they become hardened, started getting clogged, clogged and thicken. So we think of heart disease as being something for people in their 40s or as we're entering our 50s. But, and that's whenever the I guess the main symptoms probably strike.

00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:41.939
But that's not when this starts.

00:03:42.060 --> 00:03:59.699
This all starts even as young as I've seen a study where they said as young as four years old, they start to see it, which would make sense because this this, what I just mentioned before is that by age 10, most all children have fatty streaks Well, some as our starting that as early as four,

00:03:59.909 --> 00:04:08.009
or maybe even earlier, maybe even earlier. And this is the thing so that heart disease is the number one killer, correct?

00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:23.399
Yes, in the United States, the leading cause of death is heart disease and atherosclerosis. And I think a large part of that is the cholesterol which we haven't mentioned that yet. But that's a huge part of it. Plus the huge abundance of saturated fats.

00:04:23.430 --> 00:04:24.959
Well, where's the cholesterol coming from?

00:04:25.319 --> 00:04:29.639
It's only coming from animal products because you do not find that in plants at all.

00:04:29.670 --> 00:04:39.389
There's no cholesterol implants. But plants do have something that meat and dairy don't have. With fiber, fiber and eggs, no fiber,

00:04:39.569 --> 00:04:40.680
none whatsoever. So

00:04:40.680 --> 00:05:06.629
you need your fiber. Go back and listen to the previous episode if you didn't hear it on what short chain fatty acids, right, correct. That was episode number 78. You need to go back and listen to that episode. We talked about this. You've got to have your fiber, it's essential your children need it in order to flourish from an early age as possible. I'm telling you, I wish we had known this when our oldest daughter was born. I wish we had known this that long ago.

00:05:03.089 --> 00:05:21.480
We know it now. And everything has changed for all of us, we're all feeling better, we can all tell a big difference. And let me tell you, you get used to having all these aches and pains and difficulties, even from an early age, you start having some of those types of things, but you just oh, that's just how it is, I have

00:05:21.480 --> 00:05:39.209
found it's so easy just to adapt to that. And if it's a low enough pain level, you just kind of block it out, you get through your day, you're focused on a task, until it reaches a level where you say this is really interfering, or I can't handle this anymore. You don't realize how bad you feel until you feel good.

00:05:39.389 --> 00:05:57.990
So here's the thing. What do you do as a mom to prevent your children from developing these fatty streaks, and we've we've touched on that now, that is back off on the meats. And that I mean, if we had known back then honestly, we would have just stopped the main data, all of those things, I think we

00:05:57.990 --> 00:06:11.250
did well with the plant foods because we did have good quality plant foods, and we introduced them to green beans, and just lima beans, all these Whole Foods. But we did also do a fair amount of the dairy, the cheese and the meat.

00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:38.189
Well, here's the thing we were eating so many of those. I mean, you're eating we were eating meat at least once a day, at least once a day some for meat, we were eating dairy prior at least twice a day, maybe three times a day, because you've got cheese yogurt to help fade right sour cream and butter and all those things. And even for a while we stopped butter and we're eating the the vegetable oils and stuff, which is totally not healthy either.

00:06:35.100 --> 00:06:59.519
So once we got off the pressed out oils, and all those other things, but here's what you've got to think as a mom, you're thinking, Okay, my family loves all those things. I love all those things. I can't give those up. But they take up such a large portion of your life even at one piece of meat a day. And all those dairy products added in and then the eggs let's add the eggs into for more cholesterol and other things that are detrimental in there.

00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:07.829
So now you've got all of these different things coming in. And you think but but we eat veggies, we eat a lot of veggies. But there's no way you're eating a lot of veggies.

00:07:07.829 --> 00:07:10.079
If you're eating all those things, you think it's a lot.

00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:16.920
But by nature, it's not a lot because those other foods fill you up. They're high fat, they're high calorie density.

00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:28.170
And that's why we're all struggling with weight. You know, if you eat if you look at calorie density, and we won't go into that here, because we've talked about it before, and I know we'll talk about it again.

00:07:24.420 --> 00:08:24.000
But if you compare the same size bowl as something that's a high calorie density like like meat or like dairy, and then you take something and compare it like a bowl of strawberries, or just filled with a variety of fruits and veggies, you're going to eat so much more bulk in those things. So if you can find out a way to make those things taste amazing. So that you want to eat a lot of those things. You're given by nature crowd out or push out the the higher calorie density things. And that's how you start losing weight. And that's how you start getting your life back. That's actually how you start reversing the plaques to it has been shown. I mean, you can see photos in different studies where I'm thinking about one in particular that Ornish did, right wasn't Ornish, his study, or was it it was Ornish that documented it was was it Ornish. And so he documented that the vessels opening back up through healthy plant based living, it's it's huge, what can can take about two

00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:44.519
and a half years. But if I have a blockage, and it's not at a critical level where I need surgery, and I'm presented with, hey, you can go all plants and do that for a couple years, versus let's crack your chest open. If I have the option, and I'm not in immediate danger, I'm going to pick the plants.

00:08:44.700 --> 00:09:38.759
Exactly. Well, the nice thing is, is you have a choice when you know and that's why children are so passionate about this because the thing is, is that if you don't know you don't have a choice, you don't know what you don't know exactly that if you listen and you learn and you soak things up from those around you who know these things are who are on the same path and then you have a plan step by step. Okay, I'll do this first then I can do this, I can do this or here's a whole smorgasbord of things then I can choose from now have these little steps I can do now look here all these different recipes I can choose from and none of them are hard and it's really simple and they taste good. You know I mentioned on the last episode, brownie batter, hummus that we dip our apples in now my kids who grew up not eating the absolute best begged me for it and they now they are all in they don't eat any dairy, any meat, any eggs. And they begged me for these types of things.

00:09:38.759 --> 00:09:58.379
And now they don't beg me for them. They make them themselves because that's how easy it is. I mean even our nine year old gets in the kitchen she has for years making her own plant milk making her own and hummus and things like that. She makes her own homemade bread but no oil. No.

00:09:52.200 --> 00:09:58.379
Yeah, no oil. No What What else?

00:09:58.379 --> 00:10:01.889
No sugar. No Don't want to seem heavy.

00:10:02.250 --> 00:10:09.330
I'm sorry. I'm just I'm laughing because our nine year old made bread Well, she makes homemade bread but she also sells the homemade bread.

00:10:11.849 --> 00:10:19.979
And she keeps a running tally for me because I never have cash. So Jared always comes home and hey, Danny, I'm glad you're home. Yeah, 50 cents.

00:10:21.210 --> 00:10:22.710
Yeah, mommy had a loaf of bread

00:10:22.710 --> 00:10:27.929
today you me? 50 shows you have to say you owe me 50 cents. You made mommy another loaf of bread.

00:10:27.960 --> 00:11:00.179
Yes. Mommy usually takes her life for bread chops that makes whole grain. Not pecans, crew times like right. You've got to have ways to do these things that you live where we make decontrol deconstructed sandwich salad. So everything we live on a big pile have veggie sandwich, we'll chop it up and make some crew turns out that layer bread because we use a lot of times we'll just jam open faced because we don't like to eat a lot of bread. And so we'll make the cretins out of that just by popping them in the oven. No oil, nothing put them on our salad. We've got it deconstructed sandwich salad, or I did that

00:11:00.179 --> 00:11:12.330
a couple days ago. It was delicious. We love the crotons they were very crunchy and they weren't oily. And a lot of times you'll make a dressing that's kind of like what a like the mayo would be for the bread.

00:11:12.629 --> 00:11:15.269
But go start looking at how healthy beans are for you.

00:11:15.450 --> 00:11:32.639
Or your children getting beans every day. If they're not they should be. How do you do that brownie batter. hummus is one great way tons of other ways too. We make all those in the cookbook. Also the chickpeas snacks, the dried chickpeas, super easy to make no additives.

00:11:28.740 --> 00:11:35.279
Only a few ingredients. I mean, it really takes me five minutes to get those in the oven.

00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:37.799
Yesterday we were at the pool.

00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:41.100
We come home. I'm going what's for dinner. Let's have and I'm just throwing stuff out there.

00:11:41.129 --> 00:12:29.190
Oh, I'm really one. Okay, so they're having a cinco demayo celebration in the neighborhood right and we drove by and we were all exhausted when we didn't want to stop. So I said, let's just go home and make our m black bean tacos. So I didn't have black been spayed. So I grabbed the can of black beans drained them off dump in a bowl ident those tomatoes, onions, just a couple of things that I had on hand just that I could just dump and go he put some avocado up an avocado. That took me two seconds for my handy dandy favorite utensil my avocado slicer. That thing is the bomb diggity. And we're gonna put that on our resources page. All will love that. Okay, so then, yeah, so I put some salsa and squeeze some fresh lime. Really enter in under 15?

00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:29.190
No, no, it was under 20 minutes.

00:12:29.340 --> 00:12:36.240
We even had homemade corn tortillas made because those are made up of two ingredients and you throw them on a dry skillet.

00:12:36.389 --> 00:12:49.529
There's no oil, no sugar, none of that stuff. It's just the good stuff is ground whole corn, okay. And it's got a couple of other little ingredients in the in the masa harina that you buy.

00:12:49.710 --> 00:12:57.240
But it's nothing like what you're gonna buy corn tortillas in the store. We're not against that, if by all means you're thinking I'll never do that even with two ingredients by them.

00:12:57.240 --> 00:14:01.529
But I'm just telling you in under 20 minutes, I was home from the pool tired because we have been swimming and hanging out all day. And I had a hump homemade black bean tortillas with homemade tortillas on the table. And we were all smiling, laughing going Eat your heart out. And then we're saying our favorite restaurant name and our favorite vacation spot because we love their black being tortillas. But these were the bomb, they were sick. So it's not hard, it can be harder, you can't do it, you won't stick with it, you'll be exhausted from it all. And you'll think this tastes like cardboard. I don't like it, my kids won't eat it. And so there's a lot of ways to get them involved and get them in the kitchen cooking with you. You know we we train people and how to do that. That's what we do. It's our passion, come in and get involved in our free Facebook group. We'd love to have you join us there so we can get to know you more. Very soon, the Bendel's coming out, you want to get your hands on that I'm telling you very few ingredients quick on the table fast. The good stuff that can get your kids really excited about eating this way set them up for success from the beginning.

00:14:01.589 --> 00:14:12.989
And these recipes are tested and perfected. And I say that but I mean it with all my heart because these are ones that Anita has made multiple times. And even after it's been in the cookbook, she's gone through and tweaked a few and

00:14:13.109 --> 00:14:40.948
I tweak and tweak it until it can't be tweaked anymore. But let me tell you if you get it and you try it and you say something's not right or something didn't work out, that should not happen. But in the event that it did happen, email me at Anita at smarter, healthy living calm and that will be fixed right away because I just I'm very, we just believe things should be exceptional or they shouldn't be at all and that's one reason why we spent so much time and put so much heart into this cookbook Bendel

00:14:41.250 --> 00:14:45.870
but we also give your permission to use this recipe as a suggestion.

00:14:45.899 --> 00:14:55.230
Exactly. So that's what we teach our friends inside the membership. You know, every you've got to learn how to read any recipe as a suggestion.

00:14:51.419 --> 00:14:55.230
You've got to learn formulas.

00:14:55.259 --> 00:15:05.159
This is not about having just recipes, you've got to learn forms. As to make stuff simple, because a lot of times, I mean, if you're like me, you don't even have time to measure stuff.

00:15:05.159 --> 00:15:15.570
You don't want to do that. Now, a lot of the recipes, do you have that because people want the measurements, but you may be the kind of person where you look at it and go, it has this, this, this and this, and you can kind of mix it up and change it.

00:15:16.110 --> 00:16:06.509
Right? But we teach people how do you bring these flavor profiles together? How do I make recipe upgrades? So I love chili, or I love pizza. Like how do I get that now, that's what we're all about. We teach about not just food, but that's one of the major cornerstones that if you don't get that right and figure out how to do it in a way that you love. You're not going to do forever, you're not going to lose weight, you're not going to reverse that disease, because you're going to be counting calories and macros and points and what's going to suffer your relationships, your mental health, your stress. It's just it's not necessary. We want to set you and your children up for success. And this is the way you do it. take it one step at a time. Find the recipes that you love, learn how to make recipe upgrades, learn how to get those formulas of waste to throw these things together quickly and you're on the right track.
