00:00:00.810 --> 00:00:13.080
Hey, Mom, you've just come in from outdoor time and you and your children seem to feel so much better. But you probably think it's just because of the fresh air and sunshine, which are both really important.
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:17.010
But there's a whole lot more going on here than you think.
00:00:13.080 --> 00:01:08.640
And as an intentional mother, who wants to build the very best health for yourself and your family, this is super important for you to understand. And that's why we're sharing it with you today. You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food, plant based lifestyle. There's just something about getting away.
00:01:05.129 --> 00:01:08.640
That's just amazing.
00:01:08.670 --> 00:01:11.519
She's smiling right now, as she's saying the word vacation.
00:01:12.689 --> 00:02:01.230
I love it. But you know, years ago, we started talking about why are we living for this one week, two weeks, three weeks out of the year, when we can create a life that feels like that, that we get regenerated from and rejuvenated by and that builds our health on a daily basis, and the health of our family, you know, our children as well, because what we do affects them because a lot of times we take them along with us, right? Or at least they're affected by our moods and the way we are around the house. And so here's the thing, we just decided we're going to start building that kind of life where we absolutely feel so much better. Because you noticed I mean, you have made the comment we there's just one of our favorite places we'd love to get away on the coasts. And he would always notice after we came back how much better I would do pie for about a month or so I
00:02:01.230 --> 00:02:10.919
would last for a few weeks. Yes. And then it would slowly kind of dwindle away. But yes, it was a remarkable difference that I noticed in there was just that pattern. So I picked up on it.
00:02:11.159 --> 00:02:16.889
Yeah. And so when you're going away, and you're getting away on vacation, why is it that you're feeling so much better?
00:02:16.889 --> 00:03:16.590
Well, if you're like us, you get outside a lot more. And this is one of the big keys to why we feel so much better. Yes, we're leaving the stress of things behind. And we're all just kind of leaving those daily tasks and things back at home. If you're if you're leaving home, some people stay home for their vacation and staycations are kind of nice, too, because you're mixing it up and doing something different. But I think the big thing for us is getting outdoors. And you know, we've talked a lot about the benefits of getting outdoors. And sunshine is huge for us. Because you're getting that sun on your skin, you're getting vitamin D assuming that you're not completely set slathered up the entire time in sunscreens. Now, sunscreen is important, obviously, for your health. But she's good ones because your skin is your largest organ and whatever you put on there, it's gonna soak up into the rest of your system. But you don't want to have it on all the time when you're outside. Because you're not going to make vitamin D if your skin is slathered in sunscreen.
00:03:16.620 --> 00:03:29.069
Well, they've shown that just an SPF of 15, which is very common, and many people use a much higher level of sun protection, but the SPF of 15 will block 99% of the vitamin D production.
00:03:29.219 --> 00:04:28.620
Exactly. And today we're talking about you know, just why do we change? What makes it different when we've been outside? Why do we feel so much different? I think a huge part of it is that a lot of us are walking around with low vitamin D and we don't get the fresh air. And there's something about how you breathe. When you go outside, you just stop and take deeper breaths. I know when I look at the ocean, I just turned around and I just breathe in so deeply. And I don't think about doing that on a regular basis as match until I've been on vacation. And then that's something I kind of keep doing for a while. There's a lot of reasons we feel better when we've been outside. It shouldn't surprise you. Because we all know I mean, we were created to be outside, right? And so if we know we were created to be outside, should it surprise us that we thrive when we are outside. But today we're talking about something really specific, that just blew our minds. And honestly, studies are just proving more and more and more what we already know. But this is really important for you as an intentional mom who wants to build your health and the health of your children as well. But one
00:04:28.620 --> 00:04:48.720
of the things that science is proving is that there are more and more aspects of why getting outside is helpful, because and you just mentioned vitamin D and we've mentioned this before, and we're going to keep banging that drum until the end of time, because it is that important. But there are multiple ways that it will boost your health.
00:04:49.079 --> 00:05:03.360
So today we're talking about a way you probably have never heard of before. It was relatively new to ask not that long ago and kind of Laura Monson Of course, we're going to talk about things here that are backed by race. It's not just oh, we feel so much better. So this must be what's happening.
00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:45.899
And that must be what's happening? Well, there's a lot to be said for how things make us feel. And you need to start noticing how your body feels after you ate certain types of foods. And after you're not eating other certain types of foods, things like that, and how you feel when you've been outside. But you need that, that research to you're not believe that really, research is so important, because it backs up a lot of things we know and tells us why. And then it gives you even more of a drive to do those things that are going to build your health and are going to build the health of your children. And really, these things aren't hard. And it makes all of life so much easier to live. Because really, right now, we're in a society where most of us are indoors all the time.
00:05:46.199 --> 00:06:04.560
We're indoors a lot our children are indoors a lot, you know, your offices at home, if you're a home and you're if you're homeschooling, you're inside a lot unless you're intentional about going out and a lot of homeschooling moms do you go out a lot, we get outside quite a bit. But finding this out makes me want to get out even more.
00:06:01.589 --> 00:06:15.300
And if you work and you have a traditional job outside the home, and you're building your business and you're busy, and you're in meetings all day long, you're inside a lot. And why do you get stressed? And why do you feel frustrated a lot?
00:06:15.569 --> 00:06:18.779
Well, you think, you know, I'm just it's because I'm so busy.
00:06:19.079 --> 00:06:56.579
But I truly believe a lot of it's you're not in the environment you were created to be in and you need to be intentional, even when you feel like Well, I don't have time, I don't have time for that you don't have time not to. Because if you don't start getting yourself outside and getting this thing that we're talking about today, you're missing out on a huge opportunity to help yourself. And you know, if there was a pill that would do this, there's a lot of people that would be popping that pill right now. And so there are things in creation that have been placed there for you to be well to be able to heal and to build your immune system. So today, we're talking about one of those things.
00:06:57.209 --> 00:07:00.750
And the name for that is they call it forest bathing.
00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:12.269
That's the term that the Japanese gave for it. Now, you don't always have to be right next to a literal forest. But you can still utilize these principles every day and get the benefits for it.
00:07:12.420 --> 00:07:19.470
Really getting out under the trees and walking, going for walks. Like we love to get out spaces and things like that tree
00:07:19.470 --> 00:07:29.100
shrubs, I mean, you need to be around plants. So yeah, like, whenever I hear the word for us, I think of like the redwood forest over the West, the big big forest
00:07:29.129 --> 00:07:31.050
going on a deep hike into the woods
00:07:31.079 --> 00:07:34.949
exactly where you go.
00:07:31.079 --> 00:08:03.689
And you I don't know going to a trek or something. Well, yes, but it doesn't always have to be like that now, but you want to get these regular times the regular outings outdoors, it doesn't need to be that once every three months weekend long, which again, not bad. And if you can do that more power to you do it. But you want to try to get these regular times outdoors, even if it's maybe 15 minutes a day, or if it's a couple times a week, whatever you can do, but you want to be intentional about doing it regularly.
00:08:03.718 --> 00:08:38.759
Because as a busy mom, again, you think you don't have time, but if you do it, you're gonna get so much more done and the time you have because your energy level is going to go through the roof. And we're gonna we're about to tell you why. So as you get under the trees, as you get around the plants, as you're breathing in these things as you walk through a nature trail in your community, or you go out to the Greenway space like we do that a lot or ride our bikes through, we'll walk through just getting out into the park underneath the trees. There's a reason why we're feeling better and come to find out there's a substance, and I'm sure there's more than one, but this is one of the ones that research has been done on.
00:08:39.089 --> 00:08:40.349
And what's the name of that?
00:08:40.859 --> 00:09:07.288
Well, the one that they studied, the one that we saw studied is pining and is part of a class of chemicals called phytoncides, which is a little bit of a tongue twister. But phytoncides Yes. And what they have found is that this will increase the activity of your natural killer cells. I mean, getting out amongst the trees and getting the exposure. Well, it also increased not just the activity, but the number of the natural
00:09:07.289 --> 00:09:13.049
killer cells. And so then they're probably wondering, Well, what the killer cells do.
00:09:09.210 --> 00:09:19.259
Yes, what the killer cells do is they actually will selectively target cancer cells and viruses.
00:09:19.350 --> 00:09:30.659
So they help your body fight cancer and viruses. They are your first line of defense of your immune system, that it helps you to basically quickly respond to threats. So
00:09:30.659 --> 00:09:58.500
this Yes, it's the first line. So you may have heard of antibodies and how your body will once you're exposed to something you make antibodies against it. So it allows you to fight it off better the next time. Well, natural killer cells are actually what your body uses before the antibodies. It's so that is something that you've never been exposed to. These guys will fight those infections. And they will do it much faster. You don't have to develop an antibody.
00:09:58.679 --> 00:10:03.809
So it's very important it Basically like an essential oil from the trees, it's just exactly
00:10:03.809 --> 00:10:05.940
what it is, right? It's exactly what it is. So it's
00:10:05.940 --> 00:10:18.000
naturally there. And so you're we're all into essential oils today. But when you're outside, you're getting natural essential oils, you're getting these things, basically bathing you, when you walk through the trees, and we're around them.
00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:32.879
And you can smell that fragrance of the trees and the plants and things around you. There's a reason why you feel better studies are showing this can affect you up to a month or more. Whenever you get out into the out into nature, well, there's that lingering
00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:42.210
effect, it was just like, whenever we would go to the beach, I mean, that was our, that was our favorite place. So that benefit would last a few weeks after we had gotten home.
00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:45.809
But our beach had a lot of trees and a lot of plants.
00:10:45.809 --> 00:11:06.509
And we would get up under those and walk around through those and get outside on a regular basis. So it's a compound effect, you can't just think, Oh, it's one little thing, I want to get my sunshine. And so you go and sit out on your patio, that's great and all but you need to get out into nature, get yourself out, I'm not saying don't go out on your patio and get your fresh air and sunshine.
00:11:03.600 --> 00:11:48.990
But you really just take the children for a walk, take your dog for a walk, go out and do things together as a family, even if it's just for 15 minutes, it will do you so much, you'll be so much more productive. And I know as a mom, I get it, you've got a bazillion things on your plate. And if you're like us, you're building a business on top of that. And I'm homeschooling four of our children. And we've got a lot of things that we do on a regular basis. But you got to have the energy to do it, you've got to be healthy to do and we talked about, you've got to get the right foods, that's super important. But you've got to also not meeting the ones that are standing in your way. And you've got to figure out how to do that in a way that works for you. But you got to get outside you were created to be outdoors.
00:11:48.990 --> 00:11:58.860
And this is why there's natural things there. Like the essential oils in the plants. And I'm not even talking about pressing them out. We'll talk about that in a minute. But it's important, you
00:11:58.860 --> 00:12:01.289
need to think of this too, as a long term strategy.
00:12:01.379 --> 00:12:33.210
It's not just a quick fix, I take one pill now I think the health benefits will be there very quickly. But you also need to think about this as something that I'm doing for myself, for a lifetime of health benefits of improved health, longevity, quality of life, because you don't want to be alive at 80 just to be alive. Now you want to be very vital at 80. And people look at you and say you don't look a day over 60 How do you have so much energy, my goodness, slow down, you're running rings around me, you want that type of life and that type of vitality,
00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:49.769
oh, it's completely possible. And that's what we want all of you to grasp. This is not out of your reach, do not let somebody tell you, you have a specific type of gene that you've inherited from your family. And therefore you're going to have this or that. And you can do nothing about it.
00:12:49.769 --> 00:13:00.659
Because you have this disease linked with this gene. No studies show that you have a lot of power in what you do and how you choose to live your life.
00:12:57.059 --> 00:13:02.730
And it affects not only you It affects your children and your spouse as well.
00:13:02.820 --> 00:13:25.080
And while it may be true that you have that gene, it doesn't mean that you're necessarily expressing it exact have a light switch on my wall that turns the light on above my head in my room here. That light is there. But if I don't turn the switch on, the light doesn't turn on, that might as well be that the bulb is not even there.
00:13:21.720 --> 00:13:43.950
Because it's not creating any light. When I flip that switch lights on, your genes can be the same way and things like getting outside, getting good sleep, eating the right foods will turn the good genes on. But if you don't do these things, if you don't sleep properly, if you eat the the not so great foods, the
00:13:43.950 --> 00:13:45.120
foods that don't love you back,
00:13:46.529 --> 00:13:54.059
then those will turn the genes on that can harm you. So you have a ton of effect on on the genes.
00:13:54.090 --> 00:14:06.840
Exactly. And let's also think about the fact that just because the lights been turned on, because you didn't know what you didn't know, good point doesn't mean you can't start dimming it or even turn it back off, turn it off. Remove the bulb. Excellent.
00:14:08.070 --> 00:14:09.149
It's never too late.
00:14:09.389 --> 00:14:21.330
It is not I mean, there are people with cardiac disease that there are studies where they have pictures of major vessels opening back up with clogged arteries. I mean, it's there. The research is there.
00:14:18.509 --> 00:14:27.269
It's been there for years. Am I saying that specifically going to happen for you? I don't know your specific medical condition.
00:14:24.299 --> 00:14:40.590
But I can tell you, this has completely changed our life. One of the things we're talking about today and the way that we eat and just choose to live on a regular basis. Why are we so passionate about it? Because nothing is as it used to be?
00:14:35.549 --> 00:15:08.190
Praise God. You know, 10 years ago, I was not doing well. And thankfully, I'm not in that situation anymore. I mean, I'm one of the people that Jared talks about where I have to force myself to go to bed. I've got so much energy at night, you know, and I'm so thankful I'm closer to 100 now than I was 10 years ago and I feel so much better. And people say to me, you know how do you How do you have that much energy at almost 50? How do you keep your skin so clear? How do you keep going?
00:15:04.559 --> 00:15:16.110
How do you run a business full time and take care of your house and all four children? Well, it's, it's just intentional, you just have to be intentional and what we're sharing
00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:17.159
with you. Now you can
00:15:17.159 --> 00:15:35.340
do it. But it has to be simple, it has to be enjoyable, it has to taste good. And you've got to know this stuff, like what we're sharing with you today about this central oil. So we have a little bit more to share about that. Because you know, essential oils are all the rage today. And I get it because I'm, we're firm believers in it.
00:15:31.590 --> 00:15:39.450
I mean, we use essential oils for a lot of different things.
00:15:35.340 --> 00:15:47.700
And we found a great source of them, it's therapeutic. And it's just, they work very, very well for a lot of specific things.
00:15:43.919 --> 00:16:52.080
But I'll tell you, in this studies, they did test essential. So we're talking about natural essential oils that fall from the trees and from the plants and that you breathe into your body, it affects your natural killer cells. So they found that these natural killer cells, again, just to, to go over again, what we talked about these natural killer cells are your first line of defense of your immune system. So if you're worried about your immunity, you're afraid of catching something, this is something you can do on a regular basis. Because when you're outside, and you're around these things, these essential oils of the plants, what happens is your killer cells are basted. This can help you fight cancer and viral infections, because they're selectively targeted by these killer cells. So your killer cells numbers are raised, and their activity is raised when you're around this. So you think okay, then I'm going to just put some pine or some cedar or something in my Essential Oil Diffuser, great idea, fantastic idea. What research shows is that that boost the activity of those natural killer cells, but there's something that it does not do,
00:16:52.169 --> 00:17:29.279
it did not increase the number of them, right. And so some of the speculation was that when you go outside and you you reduce your stress, you reduce your cortisol level, which is a hormone naturally present in the body. And it has a specific function, and it has a normal daily pattern, like when you first wake up, it'll, it'll shoot up and then slowly decline as the day goes along. But when the levels go up too high and stay too high, those will actually decrease the number of these cells. And so they think that by getting out into these natural settings and reducing your stress, and keeping your cortisol levels normal that that helps to raise the numbers of those.
00:17:29.519 --> 00:17:35.430
So So you're saying when cortisol stays really high cortisol serves a specific purpose is what Jarrod saying.
00:17:35.430 --> 00:18:22.589
So it's a hormone, right. And so it helps us to act in times of stress. But we shouldn't be under stress all the time. But what happens in our society today is as moms were hit by this stress, and that stress and this stress and that stress, and if you constantly stay stressed all the time about something, that cortisol is not meant to stay high all the time, but your body keeps releasing it every time you're going through stress and stress and stress. And if you're constantly under stress, and your cortisol is constantly hot, that leads to infection, it leads to disease. And so one of the ways that you can decrease that they're finding is just getting outdoors will decrease your body's production of cortisol naturally. Yes. And so you're saying, how does that how does that line up with the natural killer cells? Well, did you make a link there, I
00:18:22.589 --> 00:18:45.869
thought, well, they were saying with the essential oils, that it helped to increase the activity of the natural killer cells getting outside, we'll do both. And they think that it may be the cortisol link. And it helps to increase the number of the natural killer cells, which you wouldn't necessarily have that by using the essential oil in your bedroom at nighttime while you sleep. But it's a good add on, we're not saying don't do it. It's just you don't want to substitute one for the other,
00:18:45.900 --> 00:19:21.660
right. So you don't want to just be doing this central oils you want to get outside because just diffusing essential oils in your house will increase the activity of your of your natural killer cells, which is great, because that helps you to fight infection again and fight viruses and cancer, things like that. But then the essential oils diffuse in your home want increase the number of the natural killer cells will decrease. It will increase their activity, but won't increase their number. But getting outdoors does both and they think that's linked to the fact that when you go outside your cortisol levels drop, right?
00:19:18.869 --> 00:19:21.660
That's correct.
00:19:21.750 --> 00:19:24.869
So think of it this way.
00:19:21.750 --> 00:19:42.180
You have soldiers that the central oils makes them more energetic and well armed. But if you go outside, it also increases the number of the soldiers and makes them more energetic and well armed. I'd rather have a much, much bigger army. Not that I wouldn't want one that's already there to be active, but I want both. I want the best that my body can give me
00:19:42.210 --> 00:20:01.049
and honestly you can do both. Use the essential oils, enjoy them indoors, but make sure they're not a substitute for getting outside. If you want to build your health if you want to prevent and reverse disease Mom, you can't be too busy to make time for this. Get outside.
00:19:56.369 --> 00:20:10.230
Get into nature. Because they've even shown I mean, even in one of the studies we were looking at it talked about in Japan, they did the study where people that lived in the forest and lived in rural areas have much lower rates of prostate and breast,
00:20:10.710 --> 00:20:12.059
we lower rates of it
00:20:12.089 --> 00:20:16.230
exactly. So these are things that you can easily do on your own.
00:20:16.439 --> 00:20:22.048
There's one other health benefit that I think we've touched on in a prior episode.
00:20:18.388 --> 00:20:29.098
But it's also when you're outside in the trees, all the microbes that are blowing around in the air that come off the trees that come out of the dirt.
00:20:29.278 --> 00:21:03.388
And actually, if you even go to, like the beach, or if you're around water, you've got the microbes there. And so you're getting all those probiotics on you and in you. So a lot of people that they worry about taking probiotics. And some research shows that that may not be the absolute best only because you're getting a very narrow number of microbes on a daily basis, you know, 3050, whatever's in the pill. But the studies show that you may have as many as 5000 different strains inside of you. And so you're going to be able to get a much greater variety when you go outside.
00:21:03.420 --> 00:21:18.210
And it's so great to get them naturally. I mean, you don't have to worry about how many pills do I take or when I take my pills or have I taken my pills, and there's really no side effects. So get outdoors and enjoy it is safe and wonderful to be outside.
00:21:14.579 --> 00:21:30.869
Sunshine kills a lot of viruses too. Please keep that in mind when you're outdoors, the lights, things are going on. It kills a lot of bark virus bacteria just is a healthy environment for you and your family. We want to see you thrive mom and get outdoors.
