As a busy mom, you have places to go people to see and things to do on a daily basis, your plate is full, and you do not have time to be slowed down by physical problems or even worrying about things that might happen. You know, it wasn't too long ago that somebody said to me, Well, my father had hypertension, and he had a heart attack. And I just knew it was a matter of time before I developed the same thing, too. I didn't know when it was gonna happen, but I knew it was a matter of time. Do you know if that's your genetic story, it doesn't have to be your story.
00:00:31.800 --> 00:01:38.129
Like you do not have to live that out in your own life, there is a ton that you can do on your own without even medication that can prevent and even reverse hypertension, and cardiac issues. Today, we're talking about one of those things. Now, if you're worried about that for your future, or if you've had problems with hypertension, or someone in your family that you love has developed problems, so that or if you just want to prevent this in your children's future, this is the episode for you. You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture. We're your host, Jared and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love. If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte, and let's get started.
00:01:39.150 --> 00:01:57.750
If you or someone you know has high blood pressure, then you understand very well the burden that this can cause on anybody with high blood pressure. You have medications, the costs that go along with his medications, doctor's visits, side effects, that's a huge one.
00:01:53.939 --> 00:02:00.510
And there are numerous different side effects with the different types of medications.
00:02:00.569 --> 00:02:09.210
Well, here's the thing, a lot of times before you start taking blood pressure medications, you don't feel quite so bad. I mean, maybe a lot of times it's caught.
00:02:09.780 --> 00:02:11.009
If it's caught early.
00:02:09.780 --> 00:02:11.009
Yeah,
00:02:11.039 --> 00:02:40.319
well, a lot of times it's caught before you have any side effects as far as feeling anything from it. But then all of a sudden, you're taking these medications, and you don't feel so good. So that's probably why only about 8% of people take their blood pressure medications as prescribed, like you said, it's expensive. Now you're not feeling so great. And not only that, you've got the side effects that you have to take more medications for. Yeah, so yeah, you're taking additional medications on top of your medications to control the side effects of those medications.
00:02:40.379 --> 00:02:47.129
And then you're just thinking, I just went in for my yearly visit What just happened?
00:02:43.110 --> 00:03:01.289
They said they saw my blood pressure creeping up a little bit, now I'm on this medication I didn't feel good in for. For anyone that's not taking these, it can cause fatigue. I mean, it can cause for men can cause certain issues, it just is not good all around,
00:03:01.319 --> 00:03:20.969
I'll tell you, for women, we don't have time for all that we just do not have time to be slowed down to feel bad to have more side effects than we went in with. And so I can understand the lack of compliance with taking the medications like people are supposed to. And then you add the cost to that and the time to go back to the doctor's to get prescriptions refilled.
00:03:21.120 --> 00:03:44.669
And we're not saying don't take your blood pressure medication at all, like we are both medical professionals, we we believe that there's a reason for medication, and that there's a time for medication, but we also believe that they're extremely ever used. And there's a lot that you can do to prevent the need for medications and to reverse the need for medications under your doctor's supervision.
00:03:41.430 --> 00:03:47.219
And we're just sharing one thing with you today, just one thing that you can do.
00:03:47.250 --> 00:04:08.759
And the thing about the medications is generally they are not looking at the root cause of the problem. Anyway, that's huge. You're just controlling the problem. So it's like you you start a fire, and then you're trying to use a fire extinguisher to put it out. If you would just stop starting the fire in the first place, then you wouldn't need the fire extinguisher
00:04:08.908 --> 00:04:10.169
makes so much sense. I don't know if
00:04:10.169 --> 00:04:12.569
that's a great example.
00:04:10.169 --> 00:04:12.569
But it's what I have. Right?
00:04:12.838 --> 00:04:39.598
Well, I think it's a great example. And also think about how a lot of the blood pressure medications work. You know, some are classes work differently than others. And that's why they give you often multiple medication, I think what the average person's on, is it five different. I don't remember how many, but it's a lot of medications for blood pressure. And that's because the different medicines work in different ways. And one of the major classes of blood pressure medications works by actually slowing your heart rate slowing your heart
00:04:39.810 --> 00:05:11.220
and calcium channel blockers, right and so you relax your blood vessels, but they can also make your heartbeat slower and not as hard with the whole to me the whole crazy thing with that is is your heart is beating harder. Because there's more resistance, I mean that the blood isn't flowing as easily, so it has to work harder. But then if you're making your heart not beat a strong, then the Bloods not going to flow like it's supposed to. So it just seems like it everything goes round and round. And again, we're not treating the root cause of the problem
00:05:11.310 --> 00:05:46.800
slowing your heart is not fixing the the blockages and issues that are going on in your vessels. I mean, that's just the whole the bottom line of it also, is there something then you can do to help reverse those things over time. And there are studies show that there are there are many things that you can do, we could sit and talk all day about this with you and give you multiple things you could do. But the point is not to overwhelm you with stuff because the truth is adding one thing and making a new habit than adding the next thing and make a new habit. And the next thing and you look back over the course of the year and your life is not the same
00:05:46.829 --> 00:05:57.449
look completely different. You may even wonder how did I get here, because it didn't feel like work because it was just the small little changes. But these small changes can make huge, huge differences when
00:05:57.449 --> 00:06:20.279
it's so much easier and so much more cost effective and so much less difficult for you as a busy woman, because you've got to think, you know, again, we're talking about the budget, I mean, we're looking at our budget on a regular basis we're looking at, we've got to go here and go there and go here and go there. And we've got to add in all these extra doctor's visits all the visits to the pharmacy.
00:06:17.250 --> 00:06:56.279
And then we're trying to deal with insurance companies to get our things paid out or co pays and all these different things that we've got to get paid. I mean, there's so many different things. And then if we end up with the same underlying problem, and it's just, we feel like, Oh, it's fixed now, because we're on the medication, but the medication really hasn't dealt with the root cause you've still got the same problem going on. You're just kind of covering it up, so to speak for to extend your life. But then you got to ask what quality of life is that? And is there something you could do to actually get to the problem and be as simple as sprinkling a little bit of something on your food every day? When you want to do that? I mean, that just makes so much more
00:06:56.370 --> 00:06:57.540
than you want to know about that.
00:06:57.569 --> 00:07:30.329
Exactly. So the research shows that by adding this one thing, you can get even greater results than one of the most common blood pressure medications will give you bet, you know, then there's other research that looks at that same thing, but they don't get the exact benefits. Why does those not and the others do and we're talking about flags here flashing? So one of the one of the are a couple of them use things like flax oil, which is pressed out of the flaxseed.
00:07:30.329 --> 00:07:33.149
Okay, do you're not about to get on a soapbox, I can feel it.
00:07:33.149 --> 00:08:33.600
Okay, so we've got a, we've got a study going, that doesn't show that kind of results that the whole flag study shows, which is actually a decrease in blood pressure that is greater than one of the major medications that people take for blood pressure. Okay, so now we're doing a study with flax oil, or with extracts of flax where they're pulling out one little part of what the whole flax seeds been created with. Now, it may be a tiny little seam. But if you know about the Bible, and you know about the mustard seed, you know, the power of one little seed now we're talking about a little flax seed. But if you get several of those, and we're talking just two tablespoons a day, that is super easy to get. We're going to give you some ideas about how to get that. But this study showed that if you take two and don't even take this isn't a pill Manju, it's food, okay? We're talking, eating something that tastes good. And that makes you feel great. And that has many more benefits beyond opening up your vessels or making things move floats move slowly.
00:08:34.710 --> 00:08:36.539
flow smoothly. There you go.
00:08:37.288 --> 00:08:38.278
Thank you. And through
00:08:38.278 --> 00:08:41.759
your time, that's how worked up she is. Oh, yeah, get her words out.
00:08:41.789 --> 00:08:44.700
It happens, it happens.
00:08:41.789 --> 00:08:58.649
So we're talking about your digestion as well. So in the flags, you don't just have things that will help you decrease inflammation in your body, which is how they believe this is working in your blood vessels. Now, we're not going to go into all the different Jarrod, I could give you a lot of fancy scientific names here.
00:08:58.649 --> 00:09:01.620
But you need to know how to make this work for you. We want
00:09:01.620 --> 00:09:02.850
to keep it practical for you,
00:09:02.849 --> 00:09:49.168
we want to give you enough to understand why this is going to work and how it's going to work for you. And so you don't want to take flax extracts and don't look at taking a lot of oils, oils are pressed out form of the whole version, you've got to always think whole food you want the whole food and plant based is the other part of that. You know, this is one study with one seed of one plant. And if you add this and you can get the type of reduction that that when people are actually taking this one medication. It's actually better redactions with flaxseed is what they found in this study. So and it was it was significant. It was clinically significant the findings, right. So was there something else you were wanting to say? Well, I was
00:09:49.168 --> 00:10:05.639
gonna say what the oils to the problem is that they can when you take it out of the flaxseed, it can spoil very quickly. I think it has about a month maybe two shelf life in a refrigerator. Whereas with flaxseed, you can store it at room temperature for six to 12 months,
00:10:05.700 --> 00:10:06.330
well now
00:10:07.740 --> 00:10:26.580
in the freezer for up to or the fridge or the freezer for up to a year. So you get you do get longer with the refrigeration. But I mean still six to 12 months for the flaxseed means it's stable, you don't have to worry about the oils going bad. And if you don't buy, you know, a huge barrel full, you're going to use it up before it would go bad.
00:10:26.639 --> 00:10:38.369
Exactly. And so what Jarrod saying is six to 12 minutes for a whole flaxseed I kind of interrupted a little bit sorry about that. So for six to 12 minutes for the whole flaxseed, in your refrigerator,
00:10:38.580 --> 00:10:45.029
or, well in the pantry in the pantry for 12 months for the refrigerator or the freezer.
00:10:45.059 --> 00:10:57.750
Okay, but here's the thing, now we're saying oil will spoil more quickly. But a lot of people just buy flax meal instead of flaxseed. If you're not going to eat it any other way. By all means by the mail.
00:10:54.509 --> 00:11:11.820
Like if you're not going to take this step to quickly and easily grind it and you know yourself and you think I know, that's easy. I know that's quick, but I'm not going to do it, then by the mail, get the flaxseed However, you can two tablespoons a day. Okay, but
00:11:11.940 --> 00:11:16.409
or you could even make your own meal, maybe make it another week at a time.
00:11:16.440 --> 00:11:21.720
Yeah, and that's what I was gonna say, you don't want to make more than expose a lot more quickly.
00:11:21.750 --> 00:11:26.309
room temperature, you've got about a week, or one to two months if it's in the refrigerator.
00:11:26.788 --> 00:12:09.149
So that's if it's a ground flat, correct. Okay, so it's going to spoil a lot more quickly if the flax seed is ground. So what I want you to know is get it if you need to buy it pre ground, buy it pre ground, but it is much better, and you're going to get a much better benefit from it. If you can buy just a little simple cheap coffee grinder off Amazon, Buzz it for two or three seconds. Yeah, or less. I mean, I think there are some 15 and less, and grind it up into a powder and just grind enough to use for that week alone. Because the reason you want to hit the ground, you want to eat at ground because your body has trouble breaking down and digesting a whole flaxseed, it's
00:12:09.149 --> 00:12:14.669
that outer capsule, it's very, very protective. And that will just pass right through you.
00:12:14.759 --> 00:12:36.359
Right and so you'll benefit, right, so you want to have it ground, but it's best to not buy it pre ground. However, if you want granted at home, in the little meal blender, or I'm going to give you another way to grind it. But if you're not going to do that, and you know yourself and you know, you want them by the flax meal and just use it that way, it's gonna be better than not getting it all,
00:12:36.389 --> 00:12:39.298
you may just need to keep in the refrigerator so it'll store longer.
00:12:39.480 --> 00:12:55.110
Great point. Yeah. And so the other thing is, that's not the only benefit you're gonna get, you know, we look at things we think, okay, I want, I gotta take this for this. And I gotta take this vitamin for this and this for this. And we've got to start thinking in the hole.
00:12:50.820 --> 00:13:20.519
Okay, so you're, you're there's so many more benefits to just this one phase, we're talking one fade one benefit, but I want you to just let it blow your mind for a minute that there are a million probably different methods to flaxseed. I mean, I could tell you another one just off the top of my head, you're getting so much fiber in that little seed. What is the fiber do? Well, there's no fiber found in any animal products at all.
00:13:17.250 --> 00:13:32.309
So 98% of people are fiber deficient. If you eat flax seeds on a regular basis, you're getting fiber that your gut bacteria have to have the good gut bacteria, it is their food.
00:13:27.840 --> 00:14:04.889
If you're not getting fiber from plants on a regular basis, you're starving, you're good, but go back to your starving, they will die off. They are what protects and builds the lining the single cell lining in your intestine. If you don't have that lining, things can get through that your body considers foreign because they're not meant to get through your digestive tract in that way. And then your body alerts, it goes on alert and your immune system kicks up and ramps up. And this can be the root of a bunch of different diseases. I'm not going to go into all that today.
00:14:05.129 --> 00:14:08.159
But you just need to know inflammation and autoimmune.
00:14:08.429 --> 00:14:58.980
You've got to get more plants you've got to find ways to do it that you enjoy and that are simple and we're giving you one just one simple thing you can do today. Now imagine think about what we've told you the study shed which is this one simple thing two tablespoons of flaxseed per day, and you need to eat at ground, it's best to grind it fresh or at least just for the week or so. Bet keep in refrigerator and it can store longer if you're not going to get it any other way by the meal. But I'm going to give you another quick way right now to get that flaxseed. All you have to do is throw it into your high speed blender. If you have a NutriBullet or a Vitamix those are the two we recommend lower budget get into trouble at 900 they're amazing they pulverize everything, they do not have the life lifespan basically they won't last quite as long as
00:14:59.490 --> 00:15:06.659
you take hear of it, it'll last a good long time quite a while. But the Vitamix that we, we've had it now for a good 1516 years
00:15:06.690 --> 00:15:10.740
since our oldest daughter was born. Since before that we've had it. We used it, I would
00:15:10.740 --> 00:15:19.440
say we've probably had our NutriBullet. Now, good. Two to three years, good two years, maybe it actually is still going strong. Now that we take care of it well,
00:15:19.620 --> 00:15:22.590
and seriously, well, there are keys that we've shared,
00:15:23.129 --> 00:15:26.159
we had to learn the hard way of a couple things we share on the podcast.
00:15:27.149 --> 00:15:28.289
And listen to that bet.
00:15:28.318 --> 00:15:37.649
Well go ahead and tell you just don't soak the bass where the blades are in the water. Yeah, keep the bottom of that dry. It'll ask you so much.
00:15:37.950 --> 00:16:27.720
Well, that's one key, we share some other ways. There's a lot of different ways that we have one on blenders go back and listen to the appliance and Blender episodes that we've done. But where do we go? Okay, so this is where we were going with that. So another simple way, if you don't want to grind it in your coffeemaker, just put it into your smoothies, get it in that blender. It's so very simple. And if you're going to grind it in your coffee grinder, how can you use it that way, I can give you probably 101 ways, but I don't have time today. So I just I don't want to overwhelm you. This is what we do inside our membership. And this is just one little thing that you can do. Sprinkle those two tablespoons on some oatmeal, okay, oatmeal, cereal, whatever you're eating, you can put it into breakfast cookies, I have a great recipe for that you can add it into your banana bread, I have a good recipe for that.
00:16:27.720 --> 00:16:40.350
There's all kinds of different ways you can get your flax, get it once a day. But when you do that, your gut may say what's happening because you don't have the bacteria, the good bacteria established it in there
00:16:40.379 --> 00:16:42.120
if you're not used to eating plant based,
00:16:42.178 --> 00:17:23.878
right. And so if you're new to this, make sure you're getting water and maybe you don't start off with the two tablespoons right at first you start off with maybe a half table spin, and you work your way up as your body's tolerating it. Well, anything's gonna be better than what you're doing right now, if you're not getting any flax in your life, okay, it's a small seed is so simple, it's much easier than taking a pill, it tastes a whole lot better, it comes with no side effects. Unless you count the digestive issues that you could have, that's actually a good thing. Because that shows that you don't have what you need, and you're going to start building it up, you're gonna just quickly you're gonna build up an agenda. Absolutely. So
00:17:24.179 --> 00:17:30.719
that's why we say start low and build up. So that way you don't overload your system, you give it a chance to adjust.
00:17:30.719 --> 00:17:33.179
And then you work your way up to two tablespoons a day
00:17:33.210 --> 00:17:39.180
and drink your water.
00:17:33.210 --> 00:17:41.549
Drink your water app, that fluid intake, that's another one of those great things you can do.
00:17:41.549 --> 00:17:55.559
But especially as you're adding more fiber, again, there's no fiber in animal products and eggs, things like that, get your plant foods, they're delicious.
00:17:50.730 --> 00:17:59.130
find new ways and great ways to get those into your life. Before you know it, things will start to change.
00:17:59.849 --> 00:18:09.539
Alright, now I want to share something with you that really illustrates how powerful this can be. Now in these studies, they found that there's this molecule called oxy lipid.
00:18:10.049 --> 00:18:31.890
It is made from the breakdown of omega six fatty acids. Now these are fatty acids that are found in animal products found in a lot of the purified oils like safflower sunflower, I mean things that a lot of people are eating on a daily basis. Well, as we get older, what they have found that when we're 20, the levels are fairly normal. But then once we get older, like 50s,
00:18:32.910 --> 00:18:34.109
about that, six
00:18:34.109 --> 00:18:41.009
months away from 50, that the levels increase, I think it was some like two and a half times the level of what it was when you were 20.
00:18:41.069 --> 00:18:45.000
It's like that, they just keep going up and up and up and up is what it was showing. They
00:18:45.000 --> 00:19:10.589
think that this may be part of why we had those achy arthritic pains, but they were also showing that this is part of why we have the damage in the vessels that contribute to the high blood pressure. And that's why we saw this in these studies. But with two tablespoons of flaxseed a day for just for just 30 days, four weeks, it reduced the levels of the oxy lipid,
00:19:10.680 --> 00:19:16.890
the inflammatory molecule, right, the cost, I claim pains and costs the blood, the vessel damage. Basically,
00:19:17.130 --> 00:19:29.549
it reduced it down to the level of the 20 year olds, just in four weeks, it reduced that down to what would be essentially a more normal level.
00:19:25.799 --> 00:19:29.549
it's mind blowing. I
00:19:29.549 --> 00:19:36.180
mean, seriously, the silence is just I sat there when we first heard this, and I seriously had tears in my eyes.
00:19:36.180 --> 00:20:22.019
And I looked at Jared and I said, Everyone needs to know these things. This is why we have a household of four children that we homeschool and we work and do all these different things and we're busy but we we felt the passion of having to share these things with you and start this business just to get these things out there because nobody knows these things. Nobody's telling mom These things. And I wish I had known this when I was pretty much just sedentary. I couldn't move because I was having so many debilitated. Oh, it was awful. I mean, I would cry many days when I was washing my hair because the pain was so severe and my shoulders and elbows, I don't have that anymore. Now have I just added two tablespoons of flax every day?
00:20:18.779 --> 00:20:33.480
No, but I eat it on a regular basis down. I'm telling you, this is a game changer. Things can turn around for you, you can get your energy back, you can get your life back. And we just share one thing with you today.
00:20:33.480 --> 00:20:56.759
One thing that could change this one inflammatory causing problem now, there's a lot of other things going on in people's bodies on a daily basis that are causing inflammation. This is one issue. One thing you can do very simple, two tablespoons of flax a day. ground flax into your life can make all the difference for you. This is why we want you to have hope.
00:20:57.029 --> 00:22:01.650
There's so many wonderful things ahead for you. We are thrilled to be a part of your journey. We can't wait to get to know you more, come on over and join our free Facebook group called smarter, healthy living. We look forward to getting to know you more there. And drop us a line in about four weeks after you've been on your flags. See, let us know how it goes. Let us know how you're feeling we cannot wait to hear. Again, this is just one of the simple things imagine. Imagine if you add two things, three simple things, four simple things that you can do on a daily basis that became new habits for you that you actually enjoy that doesn't involve counting calories, counting numbers, counting grant grams, keeping up with macros, making like cardboard, eating nasty food, exactly. Who wants to do that, look, we don't have time for that. We've got to have good food fast. And we've got to know how to do things like this that make us feel great so that we can leave our legacy. We want that for you and we want you to know that it is possible. We will see you next time and until then we hope you're having a great week.
