00:00:13.858 --> 00:00:18.028
So let's dive right in.
00:00:18.388 --> 00:00:55.228
You're listening to the smarter Healthy Living podcast where we firmly believe that getting healthy should never feel like torture, where your host Jarrod and Anita Roussel were college sweethearts, and health professionals who help you redefine what getting healthy looks like using a whole food plant based lifestyle. It's time to hear from the experts and learn the best tips and tricks that helped others get beyond the overwhelm, to create a vibrant life they love. If you're sick and tired of being sick, and tired, you're in the right place. So pull up a virtual chair, grab your matcha latte. And let's get started.
00:00:50.308 --> 00:00:58.649
And then number five, don't forget your lips. so important.
00:00:55.228 --> 00:01:22.558
I mean, your lips can actually get dry and cracked and burn and get sunburn there. So you want to make sure that you have your favorite lip balm, we have one that we absolutely love. It's by a brand called pure formulas, I'll link it down in the show notes for you. They make different kinds or different flavors, we love the spearmint, but they have all different kinds, they've got great writings on those as well check those out. They're fantastic.
00:01:22.558 --> 00:01:30.149
It's not an affiliate or anything like that, we just want to share it with you because we really, really love this product. Now number four is make sure to wear hat
00:01:30.179 --> 00:01:34.739
wear hats. Same principle as an umbrella, it's just more portable, it's on your head.
00:01:34.799 --> 00:01:43.649
Yeah, and you're gonna hear me say this again. And again. Because we really have pared down what we have, and it has made such a huge difference on the stress level in our home.
00:01:43.649 --> 00:01:59.968
And just the chaos of trying to get dressed and bond stuff, instead of the, you know, 20 different, like I said pair of sunglasses or 20 different hats, just have a couple that you really love and keep them in a place that you can easily find those and grab them and be on the go. Maybe even keep one in the car.
00:02:00.448 --> 00:02:17.908
And if you have one that has a brim around too, then that can help shade the ears in the back of the neck. Yeah, think about that, we may think of a traditional baseball style type hat that may cover the face, but it doesn't offer protection for the ears and the back of the neck and you can get skin cancers on there.
00:02:17.968 --> 00:02:55.649
That's true. Now, let's talk more about skin cancers and our skin because the skin again is the largest organ of your body. And number three, we're going to talk about sunscreen, this is the first go to when we mentioned taking care of your your skin in the sun, people think, oh, gotta get my sunscreen, I've got to get my sunscreen. But you read something really interesting recently. And we need to really think about I want you guys to always look at ingredients on everything, not just your food, but your cleaning products, your your laundry detergents and your sunscreen because you're rubbing that lotion in to the biggest organ of your body. And whatever's in there it goes into your system.
00:02:56.248 --> 00:03:06.838
I read this report that was just released a few days ago actually, where a an online pharmacy that will actually take all the medications that it gets and send it off to be analyzed.
00:03:07.258 --> 00:03:59.008
And it took almost 300 popular sunscreen products, the different lotions, sprays, whatever. And they found that in 27% of them, there was a chemical called benzene, which is known to cause cancer, it's not an if it is known to cause cancers that means and almost 75 of the almost 300 of those, it was shown to have the presence of benzene, there is no safe level of benzene that has been ever determined. And when you get it on your skin, it can be measured in your bloodstream. So that's why we have to be very careful. And in the case of this, it was not used as an ingredient. It was actually a an industrial solvent used to make some of the ingredients that just happened to be left over
00:03:59.248 --> 00:04:19.978
in the sunscreen. So you need to find that listed on the ingredients list. So not only do you need to be careful about the ingredients list, you need to be careful about the quality of the products. And are they third party testing the products or the products being looked at? I mean, really, it's about those things. Yeah, and you do the best you can you don't want to get fearful about these things.
00:04:16.918 --> 00:04:29.788
But we want you to understand that this is the reality of the situation we're in when someone else is making our skincare products. And so one of the best things that you can do your because you're probably wondering, Well, what do I do now?
00:04:31.379 --> 00:04:34.139
Right, am I left without hope? I mean, what am I going to do?
00:04:34.170 --> 00:04:51.810
Yeah, and there is this great website, we're going to link it for you in the show notes. It's called skin deep, and it's put out by the Environmental Working Group. And what they do is they take different household products, including sunscreens, including shampoos and conditioners and all kinds of different things.
00:04:48.540 --> 00:04:54.329
And you can take your brand that you currently use and put it in there and see how it's rated.
00:04:54.449 --> 00:05:13.079
And they write things either with their stamp of approval, which is basically like there's zero level of concern where it's very low concern. And then they go from one to I can't remember if it's nine or 10. But the higher the number, the less safe the products in the world ingredients and garlic. Yeah.
00:05:13.410 --> 00:06:04.769
And so basically, you want to look for something as either that has their stamp of approval on it, or that is one or two just very low as low as you can find in a product that you'd like. So what I'll often do is I'll go on there and look up products and see the ones that they recommend and go and search those out. And just look it up and think is this one good for our family? Do I like what the reviewers are saying. And then I tried a couple of those that they rated the best. And then we we picked from those. And that's really helped us pick a lot of our favorite products. It's a fantastic site. Definitely check that out to find the best sunscreen because everybody's wondering what's the best. And honestly, you just in general, you want to pick something that uses a safer product like zinc oxide, and there are several now that will rub in well and won't leave that white thick coating.
00:06:00.629 --> 00:06:14.069
So basically a mineral base one that uses zinc oxide to protect against UVA, and UVB. So that's our top recommendation. And from there, go to skin deep and look for your favorite brand.
00:06:15.088 --> 00:06:20.579
And number two is one that you are very, very fond of, on a regular basis.
00:06:20.608 --> 00:06:22.019
I have it right now on my desk,
00:06:22.050 --> 00:06:23.310
it is green tea.
00:06:23.519 --> 00:06:30.899
Love it. Okay, so matcha is one of my absolute favorite drinks. And I love to make Nacho latte.
00:06:30.930 --> 00:06:33.600
Now for people that don't know what exactly is matcha
00:06:33.629 --> 00:07:17.038
ground green tea leaves, so you're drinking the whole leaf, you're not just steeping it and getting some of the things that come out of it. It's basically the whole playing ground and real fun powder. So you're eating whole plant green tea, it is fantastic. Now, some brands are more bitter than others. And really the it comes graded, so you can look up and read the different grades of matcha. And then she's a brand that you think will work for you as you get the higher grades, they're a little bit less bitter. They taste a little bit less grassy, and there's just a different writing system, you can look that up. But once you find the one that you like, I use it and I drink it daily. And what I do is I put it in my blender, you need a high speed blender to live this lifestyle.
00:07:17.038 --> 00:07:20.848
It makes things so much easier.
00:07:17.038 --> 00:07:33.838
Go back if you didn't listen to it. Listen to our episode on our favorite kitchen appliance. Do you remember what number is Episode Five? Similar towards the beginning? I think it may be five, eight, somewhere around there. I bet you're right. I bet it's five. Usually, are they saying? Well,
00:07:33.838 --> 00:07:37.439
I think I think we may have had a special guest on that one. Oh, we
00:07:38.279 --> 00:07:43.199
know. That would be plant milks where we had the special guest,
00:07:43.230 --> 00:07:50.250
but that's where we also talked about appliance. Okay, well, you're just gonna have to go listen to all
00:07:52.050 --> 00:07:56.550
everything. I think we talked about it there. But I think we also have a specific one on our favorite kitchen.
00:07:57.420 --> 00:07:58.110
Yes, yes.
00:07:58.110 --> 00:08:32.340
I can't remember the number of that one a bit. You're right. Yeah, we weren't planning on talking about it today. But go back and look up our favorite kitchen appliance our favorite appliance so we can't live about. That's where we break down the different blenders our favorite Blender recommendations, but you've got to have one that blends very smooth. Not all blenders do that if you're trying to make a smoothie. You don't want a green chunky, right, you want a green smoothie. So the one that you choose is really, really important. Now I have a matcha latte and my absolute favorite cap laying on my desk right now it makes me smile. Like when things aren't going well. And I've got the matcha latte there.
00:08:32.399 --> 00:09:00.149
It makes me happy. It's wonderful. You know, it shows simple pleasure. Yeah, it's just one of those simple pleasures, it makes me feel amazing. So what I do is I put matcha a little bit of matcha powder, I mix some water with that I even put some ice cubes in it because I like it really cold and sometimes I even make it icy where it's almost like a slushy, which is really great. And then if you want sweetness, you can add some pitted dates in there.
00:08:56.850 --> 00:09:02.490
I like Medjool dates because they're soft and really sweet and they taste like caramel.
00:09:02.490 --> 00:09:11.399
They're delicious. And in matcha I like just a little bit of honey Of course, if you're vegan, you're not gonna probably eat honey, but we're not vegan.
00:09:08.549 --> 00:09:30.960
We're healthy plant based. And so we do eat some honey. But I'll put a little bit of that because I like that flavor. You can totally leave it out and just use the dates. So you've got dates, water, maybe some ice and I like to put a little bit a little pinch of salt. If you're not in salt, don't worry about that. But I do that because melt normally tastes salty cream normally tastes a little salty.
00:09:30.960 --> 00:10:32.009
So if you put a little pinch of salt, that's a great way to make plant milk. So here basically you're making a plant milk in your drink, you're not making a separate plant milk and then adding it to your tea. I like to simplify things. That's the way I do things. So to make the plant milk for this instead of nuts, I use chia seeds. So then I put a tiger's tablespoon or two chia seeds in it, that thickens it that makes it creamy but then I'm getting my omega three omega threes. Yeah, and so I get that without taking fish oil. It's wonderful. And so I always am putting omega and flax into my drink. So this is a great way to get your mochi, you can do it. If you'd like it hot, you know, you can just do the to do like you would a tea but you add the powder and you whisk it with a special matcha whisk that you'll probably get if you order matcha powder, a lot of times it comes in a little set. But it's wonderful. It's been shown to reduce inflammation and to protect your body against sunburn and send damage. It's full of polyphenols and inhibits cancer development, which also would help to fight skin cancer.
00:10:32.009 --> 00:11:09.629
It's antioxidant rich, it's just amazing all around, it's been found to help reduce the redness that's associated with getting out in the sun and so much it is a great defense. Now, anytime you have something that you're eating, that's a great defense against something else, you're not going to want to just eat that one thing when you're exposed to whatever it is you don't want to get right. So if you're going out in the sun, what I'm saying is you don't want to just light up a module once every time you're going out in the sun right before you go out. This is a daily thing or a weekly thing that you want to be incorporating into your life so that you your body has it on regular basis,
00:11:09.659 --> 00:11:12.179
make it a regular habit.
00:11:09.659 --> 00:11:16.769
And if much is not your thing, then regular green tea, you enjoy just the the hot brewed green tea
00:11:16.799 --> 00:11:19.529
right out of the leaves.
00:11:16.799 --> 00:11:40.679
That's great. Absolutely fantastic. I have those health benefits. And then number one, which matcha kinds of leads right into this is eat a large variety of whole plant foods every day. Now, I'm not just saying this because we're the crazy plant people we are but that's not psychic. And there's a reason why because I took you by surprise. So Amanda, but seriously
00:11:40.679 --> 00:11:42.720
vision awesome t shirt with that.
00:11:43.080 --> 00:11:53.370
Write it down, write it down. I've been working on some merch, so much fun. I'm developing some fun stuff, like some cups and shirts and stuff.
00:11:50.129 --> 00:12:32.039
But yeah, the crazy plant people, I like it. But we are crazy about plants. We're absolutely crazy about plant foods, because they've changed our lives. They changed the lives of our clients. And it's happened for so many people around the world because I was free. I couldn't even move I had no energy and I have to find myself to get a bed at the right time at night. Now. I mean, it's a constant struggle, because I still am going I still have energy and I could not do the things that I was placed here in this world to do if I continued in that situation, honestly, I'm just going to tell you, I don't think I would have been alive. I mean, I felt like I was dying. I was so so sick. And whole plant foods have changed that for us in amazing ways.
00:12:32.129 --> 00:12:46.080
Well in we actually had a little incident was not really an incident. But I'll call it that incident at our local grocery store where we overheard a gentleman speaking about all the ingredients in some of these processed foods. It was
00:12:46.080 --> 00:13:13.019
fantastic, because we're walking down this aisle and I hear behind me. Oh, wow, look at this. I mean, this is ridiculous. Look at all these ingredients in this plant burger. It was like an impossible burger. Look at all these crap ingredients. And I turned around I said, I know right? I mean, cheers constantly having me Stop, pick up things, look at the ingredients and go.
00:13:06.779 --> 00:13:16.409
Why? Why am I do I do that all the time? Right? I mean, why?
00:13:13.019 --> 00:13:28.200
There's no reason these things have to be in there. So you know, we're gonna have to create some fields at some point, because I just It drives me nuts. I mean, there's certain fields that you have so much trouble finding, and it just shouldn't be like, Why does it have all this stuff in there.
00:13:28.470 --> 00:13:37.320
But the reason I brought him up though, is that he has gone at that time. This was a couple days ago. Oh, yeah, had gone whole food plant based only eight days prior,
00:13:37.320 --> 00:13:38.519
I believe eight days.
00:13:38.580 --> 00:13:59.429
And he's already lost nine pounds. Right. And he didn't he didn't do this for that reason. He had a little bit of a health scare. I mean, nothing serious, thankfully, but just some lab results that really got his attention. He said, I gotta do something, I got to do it now. So he went all in. And even just in just over a week, he's lost nine pounds, it's
00:13:59.429 --> 00:14:05.309
amazing. And then it will stay off. If he keeps living this way. That's what happens.
00:14:02.340 --> 00:14:26.759
It just, it stays off. It doesn't come back and you start loving these foods and your taste for certain foods you get released from it, you get food freedom, where you're craving the things that are good for you, you're loving the foods that love you back. That's what we talk about all the time you learn to do that. And so you're not having to force yourself to eat salad all the time or force yourself to eat, you know, zero point cabbage soup all the time.
00:14:26.759 --> 00:14:49.169
I mean, you don't have to count points anymore. You don't have to count calories, you just learn how to have your favorites and you get to have those in a bit of a different way. But you still learn how to get the flavors and all those things in there and it's going to help even your skin I'm telling you like we have people stop us and ask us about our teen skin and our skin like how does your skin look so clear. What How do you not have
00:14:49.200 --> 00:14:54.090
breakouts people asking her what her routine is? Yeah, like she doesn't have one.
00:14:54.120 --> 00:15:38.879
She said I eat plants. I whole plant foods. I eat a lot of different colors. I get a good variety. It makes a huge difference. And she's noticed one of the biggest things is getting more greens, leafy greens, cruciferous, things like that it's made a big difference for her. But um, but yeah, it makes such a difference. It's not just what you don't get, it's what you do get. And here, you got to get these get these things in there because plant fades, right? They themselves, create certain products create certain ingredients, so to speak certain things that they have like vitamin C, and vitamin A, and phytosterols and different things that they have antioxidants that protect them from the UV rays,
00:15:38.909 --> 00:15:48.539
right, because they're exposed to the sun as well. And I would say a lot longer periods of time than we are right. So they have to have their mechanisms to protect themselves as well.
00:15:49.259 --> 00:15:56.100
And we need to know that which feeds are the highest and C and E right? And the antioxidants? I mean, we have an exhaust.
00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.639
Well, we have an exhaustive list down in the description.
00:15:59.669 --> 00:16:08.309
Yeah, you got it. You gotta memorize that, because I'm telling you, you need to build another crazy way to live, that's gonna make things hard.
00:16:04.379 --> 00:16:47.580
No, no, you don't need to do that you need to get a wide variety of whole plant foods, because many, many plant foods have CNA and in varying degrees, but they have a lot of other things that you need. And they have fiber and they have antioxidants. And they have beta carotene, which is also some protective. So obviously your reds and orange veggies, things like that. I'm fruits are going to be skin protective. They're going to protect you from the sun, dark leafy greens, cruciferous are loaded with skin protecting antioxidants that are shown to be cancer protective in general. So what do you need to do get a wide variety of whole plant foods, and it's not going to help again, if you just dosa, right. I
00:16:47.580 --> 00:16:48.360
was just thinking that
00:16:48.389 --> 00:16:49.500
right before you go out.
00:16:49.710 --> 00:17:06.839
And I think you had mentioned beta carotene, where it was saying if you get it over time, it's something that has to emulate, and the body can't just take a big mega dose and have it protect you is something that you eat daily on a regular basis. And then that then helps give you that protection.
00:17:06.930 --> 00:17:53.519
And no matter what we're looking at a lot of times we'll we'll look at research studies and things and they'll look at things like well, if I take a vitamin E supplement, or if I take a vitamin C supplement, you know Am I gonna get that I can just do it like that I'm just take a pill but they find over and over and over again and study after study that the pills don't work the same, because you're not getting that whole plant food, you're not getting all the wonderful things that your body needs that were put into that plant for you to work together. We don't even know people don't even know researchers don't know all the things that are in there yet. I mean, they're going to be learning this for years and years and years to come and may never learn them all. I mean, seriously, you gotta think of all the things the creator put in there for you to thrive.
00:17:49.529 --> 00:18:08.970
They're there for a reason. So when we start extracting and taking out bits and pieces, like vitamin E and taking out the vitamin C, it's just not going to work as well. And then some cases, studies are now showing that that can be dangerous.
00:18:03.809 --> 00:18:08.970
cause harm not a good idea.
00:18:09.059 --> 00:18:16.769
I would much rather eat fresh strawberries fresh yes hi fresh mango pineapple. Then take vitamin C supplement Exactly.
00:18:16.799 --> 00:18:18.480
Give me sweet potatoes give
00:18:18.480 --> 00:18:22.799
me carrots, another one that people don't think think of for vitamin C.
00:18:23.220 --> 00:18:26.369
Absolutely a pomegranate.
00:18:23.220 --> 00:18:51.299
So good. Don't miss your pomegranates in the fall. They are amazing. Okay, so here we have the top 10 things now you stuck with us till the end so we have a couple of bonuses for you. And these are important things because sometimes no matter what you do, and we have found that eating more whole plant foods we don't have as much trouble with burning I'm not saying don't go out with scent without sunscreen because now you're eating whole plant food that would be foolish you need to have some
00:18:51.299 --> 00:18:54.839
type of protection whether I had an umbrella a long sleeve shirt
00:18:54.869 --> 00:19:00.000
now do we talk about though to not put it on right away when you first go out every time I
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:15.660
don't did not really important and this is a good tip. Yeah because if you use a sunscreen that is SPF 15 it will block almost 99% of your vitamin D production. So what we will typically do is go outside for 1015 minutes not long
00:19:15.720 --> 00:19:16.740
get sunshine
00:19:16.769 --> 00:19:21.420
then put the sunscreen on so that way we've made enough for that that day.
00:19:21.509 --> 00:19:40.559
The vitamins the vitamin D right because your body makes vitamin D by getting out in the sunshine in response to those rays. So if you put the sunscreen on even if SPF 15 even that low, it can block your your skin's ability so the coconut oil, you may want to get your sun even before you put that on.
00:19:40.769 --> 00:19:48.000
Well it's SPF for four so 20% of it so yeah you would get you're gonna get some you'll get some
00:19:48.180 --> 00:19:53.549
but it is important and every time you go outside don't just freak out and be putting on sunscreen all the time anyway.
00:19:53.789 --> 00:20:21.900
And again, be careful about the chemicals that are in your sunscreen look that up look up the link that we have down below for you But do use sunscreen and what was the point of that get your vitamin D. Make sure you get your vitamin D your vitamin D and that means don't be putting sunscreen on every time you go out the door, get some sun exposure tenjin is short burst 20 minutes depending on where you live and depending on your skin type as well like how dark your skin is.
00:20:21.930 --> 00:20:43.950
Now if your dermatologist has given you other instructor advice or instructions, please follow what they say. I mean if you've got a specific issue going on problem or a skin problem a skin cancer, whatever the case may be, please follow their advice. This would be for someone that has normal healthy skin without a known skin issue like a skin cancer.
00:20:44.009 --> 00:21:24.630
Exactly. Now for the two bonuses, bonuses. Alright, so what do you do if you get a little bit burnt or you get a little bit of redness on your skin, my best tip is rose hips oil by some organic rose hips oil, it comes in a little PET bottle, trying to remember the brand I use our occasion maybe, for sure, but it was in a little PET bottle like two four ounces and you just use a few dots goes a long way. Just put it on the areas that you're a little bit red, and by morning, it's usually cleared up. It's amazing. It takes some of that little sting away if you get it read like that we haven't again, we haven't had it in a while but when we did get it that was a game changer. So rose hips oil.
00:21:20.609 --> 00:21:41.970
The other thing is, if you live in an area where you can grow aloe, it goes crazy where we are, but if you can grow it always keep an aloe plant on hand because going and getting that bottle of aloe is not the same thing, right? You look at the ingredients list on your pure aloe bottle where you bought the aloe vera gel.
00:21:42.359 --> 00:22:23.069
There's very little aloe vera gel in there. And there can be drying things like alcohol and things like that. It depends on the product, right? Look at the label, look at that label. But if you can have fresh aloe you just break off a piece of leaf squeeze into your hand and you got this soothing gel right there. That is amazing. And healing when it comes to any kind of burn really. I mean it works amazingly well. And sometimes I've been known to drop a little drop of pure lavender in there into the aloe vera gel and then rub that in because Allah lavender is amazing. 00:22:23.309 --> 00:22:32.099
And I just put that lavender right on there. And it took the burn away within about a minute or so. And a lot of times it just goes away but the next day when
00:22:32.250 --> 00:22:37.529
we found with any injury that it really helps to prevent scarring and accelerate healing.
00:22:34.890 --> 00:22:37.529
